CHAPTER FIVETarina, standing at the porthole of her cabin, watched the party walk down the narrow jetty where The Sea Siren was moored.
She thought first how lovely Betty was looking and that Lady Loraine, with her sweet smile and soft kind voice was someone of whom she would always be fond.
She had done for Lady Loraine only some small services, but they had evoked not only gratitude but also praise and a sympathy that Tarina found rather touching.
“You are so pretty,” Lady Loraine had said to her only yesterday, “that I am sure you could find something more interesting to do than being a lady’s maid.”
“I am very happy as I am,” Tarina replied.
“Then that is all that matters,” Lady Loraine smiled, “and thank you once again for the excellent way in which you have mended my gown.”
