Chapter 1: Mate of a wolf
Marco wakes up with a pounding headache and a screaming wolf in his head. He regrets drinking so much last night, but that was the only way to settle his restless wolf. He opens his eyes slowly and takes in the unfamiliar surroundings of a hotel room. He tries hard to tune out his wolf, he just doesn’t have the energy to deal with him this morning. The scent in the room is divine and it does wonders for his headache. Jasmine, lilac and chocolate, he breathes in deeply and tries to relax. He hears rustling of silk and turns his head towards the sound. A woman is standing by the window and the hot chocolate in her hand is part of that divine scent he cannot get enough of. She has long, straight, raven black hair and the midnight blue robe she is wearing is translucent. He can clearly see her sculpted body and he can remember parts of the night, when he was holding that body in his hands and ravishing it with his mouth.
That memory awakens another. She is the same height as himself and in her stilettos she was just right for a wild session against the wall. He can’t remember if there was ever a woman that brought out that amount of passion in him. His body begins to heat under the covers and a stirring in his loins makes him wish for another round with her.
“Down boy, you don’t even know her name.” He whispers in the pillow and buries his head in it to silence the rising whimper.
A hand in his hair makes him lift his head. She is sitting on the edge of the bed, a mug of hot chocolate on the side table in his line of sight, but the scent of jasmine is drowning out the chocolate. He turns around slowly, to not throw her off of the bed and looks at her face. Porcelain white skin, pale blue eyes and a smile to melt his heart. Her features remind him of Vesna.
“Do you regret last night?” Marco finds his voice.
“Not at all.” She smiles at him and slowly leans over him to kiss him again. Her hair spills around them, making a nice warm shelter. His arms embrace her tight and he pulls her completely on the bed. The kiss turns more passionate and he roams his hands over her body. He wants more of her. He rolls them over so he is on top of her and he nudges her legs apart. The robe falls open with her legs and he can feel the wetness between her thighs, she wants him too.
Marco rams deep in her. This morning he has no patience for a slow play, but he will make it good for her, too. He lifts one of her legs up on his shoulder and plants his arms on the sides of her head for stability. He pumps faster and silences her moans with another kiss. He just can’t get enough of her. Her scent is driving him crazy. He’s barely holding on as it is. He can feel his orgasm threatening on the next deep push and he growls in her mouth. He reaches between them with a hand and strokes her clit to speed her up. He doesn't want to leave her unsatisfied.
She bites his lower lip as an orgasm floods them both at the same time and her hands grip his hair tight. She somehow manages to tilt him over and they just lay there in a tight embrace, both panting and trying to catch their breath.
In the post orgasm grogginess, Marco lost the tight grip on his wolf. What comes out of his mouth next scares him to death. “Mine.”
“What did you say?” She asks when she lets go of his hair and leans her head on her arm to look down at him. He can see in her eyes that she heard him quite fine.
“I said: mine.” Marco mans up to his words and waits for her response.
“I thought you did.” She smiles mischievously. “You’re in trouble little wolf.”
“You know I’m a wolf shifter? How?” Marco still looks up at her, not willing to move away from her at all. And his wolf is finally quiet and settled.
“The how is not the right question here.” She states calmly. “The more important question is: will Vesna let you go?”
Marco swallows down his trepidation and asks: “Who are you, exactly?”
“Morrana.” She answers with a bright smile. And that smile lights his day. That is the only light his wolf needs to live happily. And that traitor is smug as hell in Marco’s head. Humming to itself. ‘You would purr like a cat if you could?Traitor!’ Marco tells his wolf off in his head and the animal has the audacity to turn his back on him and snuggle up with his tail and feign sleep.
“Vesna’s sister, Veles’ best woman. I should have known.” He looks at her perfectly sculpted face and apologises. “I’m sorry I had to ask your name.”
Morrana gets out of bed and walks over to a table that is set with breakfast goods she ordered before Marco woke up. She pours a cup of coffee for him and returns to him. She can feel his eyes trailing her every step.
“You, my lady, are glorious.” He tells her as he accepts his coffee.
“And you are forgiven.” She says as she retrieves her robe from the tangle of bedding and slips her hands in the sleeves but leaves the front open. “You were the wedding coordinator? That is a bussy job. I have an event planner employed at my hotel and she hates doing weddings.”
“Actually, Ilona planned everything. I was roped into coordinating the wedding day at the last minute.” Marco confesses. “I was supposed to be Devanas escort and translator.”
“Oh. So you were promoted from guest to coordinator yesterday morning? Is that why you drowned in whisky at the party?” She laughs at him.
Marco feels his skin turning red at the embarrassment that she saw him at his lowest point at the party. He hangs his head and crawls out of bed. His trousers are laid on a chair on his side of the bed and he pulls them on. He feels kind of modest and admires Morrana for her nonchalance to walk around the room naked.
“I had to drown my wolf. He was getting harder to control. I had the feeling things were slipping from my grasp all day. That something will happen, I just didn’t know it would be something good.” He says as he walks to her side and kneels before her. He takes her hands in his and kisses her knuckles. “I am yours to command, my lady. I promise to love you and cherish you til my last breath…” He looks her straight in the eyes with a challenge of his own. “If you’ll have me.”
Morrana only smiles at Marco and pulls him on his feet as she stands up. She guides him to the table and pulls out a chair. “Lets have breakfast first. I can’t starve you on our first day.” She sits opposite of him and continues to smile. She is happy and she will hold on to this feeling as long as she can. They eat in comfortable silence for a while. She keeps watching him watching her. She wants to know what he is thinking and what is the cause of that gorgeous smile on his face.
“Tell me something about yourself.” She breaks the silence. “I only know you are Vesna’s assistant.”
Marco looks at her, really looks at her and she is still smiling. There is nothing cruel in that smile and that gives him some solace. She is just curious.
“I’m a wolf shifter. I’m 28 years old. And a total failure in the eyes of my family. My father is the alfa of our pack. A respected firefighter. My older brother is one too. I was rejected at my trial. Deemed not fit. I’m too clumsy.”
“Oh.” She says. “But that is not all you can be, right? There are other professions.”
“No.” Marco smiles ruefully. “I studied law and dropped out right before my last exam.”
“What really happened? I can feel you're letting a lot out.” She reached a hand to him to soothe him.
“Two of my best friends died in a car crash that week. I couldn’t focus on anything but that pain. We were close growing up, we even lived together on campus.”
“I’m so sorry for your loss. I can understand that it is hard to live through something like that.” Morrana stands up and goes to him. She gives him a hug to take away some of the pain she can sense. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and smiles gently. “I won’t judge you. Besides, you make me feel happy and warm.”
Marco just huges her back and inhales deeply. She grounded him somehow that he was able to share his darkest moments with her. And she seems to bring out something new in him, too. “Why can’t I keep my mouth shut around you? I never told anyone about my reasons and I’m not normally one to share my feelings.”
“It’s the mate bond.” Morrana smirks. “As much as I understand the concept, the bond doesn’t allow you to lie or withhold things. Maybe with time you manage to not say everything, but never outright lie to your mate.”
“I guess we can test that theory, if you don’t just reject me and send me packing.” Marco frowns a bit as he lets her go.
“Never!” She is outraged by the thought and Marco bites back a response. “I will not let you go! Now stop disrupting my happiness with thoughts like that.”
“As you wish, my lady.” Marco smiles at her.
“Get dressed, we have an appointment with Vesna.” Morrana tells Marco as she rummages through her suitcase. “How did you end up with Vesna, anyway?”
“She helped my dad keep the pack when we were attacked by some outsiders. She was just there. A few days later dad informed me I have a job interview and there is no negotiating it. Basically, he signed the contract for me and I had no way out of it.” Marco looks at his tie and decides to not wear it, he just flips another button open on his shirt. Casual it is, today.
“How do you feel about that?” Morrana asks him and he gets a first real glance of her. Dressed in a black silk dress that hugs her like a second skin and falls to the ground, her elegant legs in a pair of black stilettos and her long black hair flowing free. She holds a pair of Prada sunglasses and a small black clutch. No rings on her fingers, no earrings to mar her perfection, just a very long black necklace with a few pendants on it. He knows he is just staring at her like a total i***t, but he has somehow lost his ability to speak. She snaps her fingers and the sound brings him out of a trance. “Marco? Are you ok?”
“Sorry.” He shakes himself. “I’m just lost in your perfection.” He walks to her and offers his hand like a gentleman. “Do we need a taxi?”
“Oh, no. We go my way. I don’t really like cars.” She smiles brightly. “Have you ever traveled by a portal?”
“A portal? You’re gonna make my life an adventure.” He says all excited.
“Oh, you’ve got no idea.” Morrana laughs with sparks in her eyes.
“I think my dad did me a huge favour by signing me over to Vesna, just don’t ever tell him that.” Marco confesses when she opens a portal to Vesna’s apartment and he will go embrace his future with a smile.
