Her past
BLOOM I stood in front of the tall looming building, a bit lightheaded. Today would determine my parent's chances of survival. As if being born into debt wasn't enough, they decided to fall sick at the same time. Mother needs immediate surgery while Father needs the machines to keep him alive. I shook away thoughts of them and entered the hospital. In my moment of desperation and helplessness, my boss had come through for me. He had found out about this job and given me the address. A man needs a surrogate mother, and apparently, he is rich because who in his right senses would pay ten million dollars for surrogacy? I crossed my heart as I entered the waiting room. If I got selected, the money would help my life. I'd be finally able to pay off my parent's debts and their hospital bills. There were four more ladies in the waiting room, all within ages twenty-three to twenty-six. I gulped down, swallowing my nervousness. I have to contend with four more people for the prize money. "Bloom Peters," a nurse called my name and motioned for me to enter the doctor's office. I sat before the doctor, sweat trickling down my face in a foreboding sense. "Congratulations, Bloom, you are in perfect shape. Now, if you would just lie down there, let's get this over with quickly." She pointed at a bed at the corner of her office. I shook my head vehemently, refusing to believe my ears. "The money." "The money will be paid immediately after the procedure." "The money first." I protested, begging her with my eyes. She sighed and picked up a pen, "Your account number?" I called it out for her instantly, with shaky breath. Barely two minutes later, my phone vibrated with an alert. I sighed in relief and walked to the bed. Just as the doctor was inserting the tube through my hole, the door suddenly burst open. A beautiful, mesmerizing man came into view. I momentarily forgot how to breathe. "I came as soon as I got your message," his deep, rich tone carried through the room. His eyes rested on me, and I watched in horror as his face contorted with rage. "What is this redhead doing here?" He spat out in disgust. "She is the only one -" the doctor began but was cut off, "Send her away!! I don't want her!." I frowned at him in surprise, I've never met him in my entire life. Why was so much hate rolling off him? It was almost suffocating. "But...." "Abigail. " He called in a strangely calm voice that caused the hair on my body stand, "if she doesn't disappear in the next one minute, I'll have your license revoked." Was he that powerful? I yanked the tube out of me, packed my things, and bolted out of the office in fear and anger. Was I too ugly to carry his baby or what? Whatever, it's his loss. I have the money, and he has lost, I pray, his only chance to have a baby. I rushed to the hospital, still shaking, and paid for my parents' bills. After paying the bills, I went outside to get food and stop by the bank to pay off my parents' debt. Just as I rounded the corner, strong hands pulled me against the wall and ripped my phone from my hands, and then disappeared. I stood frozen, then I ran to the nearest bank, pumping my legs to go faster. By the time I got there, it was too late. The money was gone. I slid down the counter and burst out in tears. According to the accountant, the money was untraceable. It could have been none other than that man. Distraught and weak, I managed to pull myself up and go back to the hospital. For a moment, I thought about standing in front of a moving bus, but I couldn't put my parents through that heartbreak. As I entered the hospital, I noticed a nurse looking at me pitifully. A sense of foreboding filled my body the second time today. The doctor in charge of my parents stood in front of me and placed a hand on my shoulders. "I'm sorry Bloom, we lost your mother." He paused. I glanced up, staring at him from under my eyelashes. "And your father passed on not long after. You paid the bills late. There was only little we could do." He added. I covered my ears and let out a raw guttural scream. It sounded so foreign to my ears. I dropped to the floor and continued screaming. Distinctly, I noticed the doctors scrambling around me, yelling orders to the nearest nurses. This is all his fault. That stranger's fault. "Is it?" My mind taunted. Realization hit me like cold water. It's my fault, if only I had acted quicker and wasn't busy getting angry at that stranger. One hour would have made a lot of difference. Distinctly, I felt a hand on my neck, then a needle jammed in. Everything went black with a last thought. I killed my parents. **** I woke up with a head splitting headache, my eyes gradually adjusted to the too bright light. "Bloom?" My best friend peered at me, "you are awake." Relief flooded her features visibly. "What happened?" I wanted to ask, but I couldn't move my lips. As if reading my mind, she rambled on, "The doctor had to keep sedating you. Each time you wake up, you scream and throw a fit. " "How long have I been here?" I mouthed at her, moving my lips slowly. "Two weeks." She said curtly, then her expression was serious, "We have to leave the country. The police are searching for us. Our boss was involved in fraud, he hired hackers too, to steal people's hard earned money. "The police think we are his accomplice. Thank Heavens, you woke up. I was sad about leaving you all alone. " "He's a fraud?" I mouthed back, an unspoken question between us. "No where to be found, and yeah, he stole your money too." The doctor entered at that moment, a small smile on his face. "How is she, doctor?" Leah asked, "can she be discharged now?" The doctor ignored her and faced me, "I'm glad to see you're better." I nodded at him gratefully. "Yes, she can be discharged. " He replied Leah, and made to leave. He stopped at the door and turned back to face me, "Congratulations, you are pregnant. "
