Chapter 2Life was lonely without Zack, yet when the phone rang and Zack’s number appeared on the screen, Ian hesitated to answer. “Hey, Ian,” said Zack, sounding uncharacteristically cautious. “Hello.” “You still mad at me?” Ian considered his answer. “Not really.” What would be the point? “Good,” said Zack, sounding like his old self again. “You coming out on Saturday night?” The thought that Zack just needed someone to accompany him crossed Ian’s mind, but who else did he have to go with? And the thought of staying at home on a Saturday night was anathema. “Of course,” he said finally. “Cool. I’ll be there at eight as usual.” Zack hung up.
