Much more discreet, however, was the archive of the Popes kept at Castel Sant’Angelo. Santini and Fra Pasquale had no difficulty in entering that fortress, super-guarded by the Swiss Guard, because their passes were signed by none other than the Vatican Head of State, the Librarian of the Holy Roman Church and the Pope. It would have been enough for the Swiss guards to see only the Pope's authorization, but the three absolute authorities, put together, guaranteed the two of them carte blanche as well as unlimited
