I screamed, sliding down the seat, slamming into the wall. Áine groaned across from me, pushing herself toward the uplifted side of the carriage. “s**t!” I was going to die out here—I knew it, knew it! Everything happened so fast. We traveled for a split second on two side wheels, and I held my breath, gripping hold of the seat. Then the whole thing flopped onto its side. I jostled and smacked my head on the ceiling, stars dancing in my vision, my arms and legs flailing about, tangling with Áine, her feet at my head. She wrestled with the dagger in her hand, the weapon swinging toward me from the momentum. My life flashed before my eyes. Death was coming swiftly. I’d never see my family, Luther, or anyone again. The monsters would drink my blood and I’d come back as one of them. God
