Chapter 4: What have I gotten myself into?
Azazel
It’s nearly five in the morning when I get to my temporary home. Thankfully it’s only a mile away from the club. My thoughts return to the beautiful girl. I had never been so entranced by a girl. Unfortunately, Charlie’s cousin, Jill, chose that moment to show up. Not wanting to blow my cover, I quickly diverted her attention. The downside of the whole situation is that the girl disappeared. She must think I’m an asrsehole now.
I don’t know how I feel about the fact that she and Sahara are familiar with each other. For all I know, she works for Sahara. However, with the way Sahara treated her, I imagine it was not a friendly working relationship. I wanted to rip Sahara’s throat when she spoke to the girl—Zoe, in that tone. What surprised me more was seeing the other girl, Bree, with her. What are the odds that she’s friends with Zoe? Zoe, what an odd name. However, it seemed to fit her.
She had the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. I felt like I was looking into the clearest ocean. I nearly exploded when she licked her plump lips. Her body was shapely and firm. She was wearing a short black skirt that made her legs look miles long. All I could think about was taking her into the back room and f*****g her brains out. I guess being interrupted was not a bad thing. I can’t afford to get distracted, especially if she and Sahara are involved with Marael.
Somehow this ups the ante, and I don’t like it. I’m not used to feeling this out of depth, especially with women. But something about Zoe made me feel like I was going off into the unknown, and it made me a bit uncomfortable.
I’m about to step into the house when I sense it. My wings strain and my eyes begin to glow with agitation. There’s an intruder in the house. Reaching behind my waistband, I remove my sacred sword and prepare to annihilate whoever is poaching in my territory. I always have my sword strapped to my back. It’s a habit that I developed when I left hell. Considering Lucifer was pissed at me for leaving, I always kept my weapons close, waiting for the day that he’d come looking for me.
I gaze around the front door and windows trying to see if anything was disturbed. Everything looks untouched. But my demon instincts tell me that someone has entered my territory. And I trust my demon instincts.
I move towards the back and inspect those doors and windows too. They're untouched. As carefully as I can, I fly up to the roof. I purposely left my window unlocked in case I needed to get out or in quickly. Slipping in through the window, I slip quietly into my room. Everything is where it should be. However, my demon instincts tell me that something is off, and I trust my instincts. I sneak out of the room as quietly as I can and make my way down the stairs. That’s when I see him. He’s standing in the shadows of the room near the front window. He still hasn’t noticed my presence. Before he could turn, I go on the attack and aim my sword towards his head. He turns instantly and parries my strike with his own sword. That’s when the fight ensues. I kick out at his leg and send him stumbling to his knee. However, he recovers quickly and slashes at my stomach. I jump back and kick at his chest.
He does an impressive somersault and lands on his feet. We’re now standing across from each other. That’s when I get a good look at his face. His eyes glow a hellish light, and his teeth look like a shark’s. His long sharp claws protrude from his strong hands like knives.
“Fallon!” I spit out angrily. Fallon tilts his head. “Azazel.” He spits out distastefully. I sneer at his tone and narrow my eyes. “What in the b****y hell are you doing in my house?” Fallon’s lips fold back with a hiss. “What am I doing here? Are you mad? Shouldn’t that be my question to you? Bree is my charge. Remember?”
Exhaling deeply, I lower my sword and take a step back. “I was sent here by the Council.” He hisses in derision and says with a disgusted growl. “Mathias sent you?” I nod my head. “Yes. The Council sent me to investigate a woman who might be involved with Marael. We think she might be helping her.” Turning back to his human form, Fallon slides his sword on the scabbard strapped to his back and moves in the direction of the window. Fallon is a scary looking git, which makes sense considering that he’s the son of Lucifer and the demon queen Lilith. We were both born and raised in hell. We were never mates, mind you, but we knew of each other.
Right now, he’s wearing a black leather jacket, black t-shirt, and black jeans. His hair is down to his chin, and his skin is pale. He and I are about the same height and build. He’s an enigmatic sort. I guess he’s attractive. Probably not as striking as I am, but not bad, I guess. Neveah says that it’s the “don’t f**k with me” aura that we give out.
“Why are you in my house, Fallon?” Fallon snorts and takes a purposeful step towards me, which makes me stiffen in readiness. But he doesn’t attack. He simply holds his palms up in surrender and says, “I’m not here to fight you, Azazel. You know that I’ve been guarding Bree because Lucifer wants her.” I nod my head. “So you said, mate. Yet you’ve never explained the reason Lucifer is after the girl.”
Fallon’s face stills like a statue. It’s as if he shut off all emotion. However, I’m not the type to leave things be. “Look, Fallon, I can’t help you if you continue to act dodgy around me. So nut up and tell me what is going on, or get your arse out of my house.” I grit out sternly.
Fallon’s face hardens further, then softens. He doesn’t say anything for a moment. Then, as if making a decision, he begins to talk. “Many centuries ago, an ancient seer came to Lucifer with a prophecy. The prophecy was that on the beginning of the second Millennia, an Erue would rise and destroy hell.” I shake my head in derision. “That’s not possible. Erue’s are a myth.” Fallon looks past me as if remembering something horrible. Then, he looks back at me and responds. “Whether an Erue exists or not is beside the point. The seer told Lucifer that the Erue would kill him and destroy hell.”
“What does that have to do with the girl?” I ask impatiently. Fallon tightens his jaw and grits out. “After the seer told Lucifer about the prophecy, he also told Lucifer that the only way to keep the Erue from coming to the world is to destroy its creator.” He looks back at me with a determined glare. “Bree is the Erue’s creator. She is destined to be the mother of the Savior.” My vision blurs, and my body shudders in surprise. Erue is another word for Savior or Messiah.
People still believe that Jesus was the Messiah. However, all supernatural beings know that Jesus did not really exist. There was no Mary or Virgin birth. Charlemagne actually stole the story of Jesus from one of our Legend of the Erue. According to Supernatural legend, the Erue is to be the creation of a reincarnated Oracle and a chosen champion of God. The Erue is supposed to save the Supernatural and human world from complete annihilation. But it's all myth. Isn't it? “Wait a moment. That’s just not possible…you’re mad. Even if it was true, which I don’t think it is, what is to say that Bree is the Oracle? I wasn’t around her for long, but I can tell you that there was very little supernatural power radiating from her. She’s obviously at least part supernatural. But there’s no way she’s powerful enough to be the creator of the Erue.”
Fallon puffs out a breath and runs his fingers through his hair in frustration. “Believe it or don’t, but it is her. The seer tossed the bones many times, and it led to that girl. The seer says that the girl is marked by the hand of God. She bears the mark. I’ve seen it. It’s on the back of her neck. It looks like the Northern Star. And when I look at it with my supernatural eyes, it glows. It’s her Azazel. All signs point to her.” He says with an aggrieved tone. “And I’ll do anything to protect her.”
I can tell that Fallon is at his wit's end. He truly looks distraught at the thought of the girl dying. I have to respect that, even if I don't understand his reasoning. “Very well, If the prophecy is true and if she’s the one that it’s talking about, I’ll help you. But for right now, I’m worried about the fact that Marael might use this girl in a ritual to bring hell on Earth. If she’s as powerful as you say, then this is a lot more egregious than we thought. There’s also the issue of the power siphon. The council believes that Marael might be using another girl to siphon power from. It’s obviously not Bree because she’s the key to the ritual, so it has to be someone else. The file says that she has a sister. Perhaps it’s her.”
Fallon scowls in question. “Perhaps. I saw Bree at the club you were in tonight.” My head snaps up in surprise. “I never pegged you for a b****y stalker, mate. But yes, the club belongs to the woman the Council is having me investigate. Apparently, your charge and her friend needed a night out.” I walk towards the blue couch and slump down on it in exhaustion. Fallon follows suit and sits across from me. I’m sure we look quite the sight. A demon and the progeny of Lucifer sitting on an Ikea couch talking about the end of the world─ Lord save us all.
“What did the Council say about it?” At first, I'm unsure of whether I should trust him, but then I realize that he trusted me with his secret. I guess we’ll just have to see if our trust is well placed. “Mathias said that whoever Marael is siphoning power from has to be some kind of Wraith, Succubus, or Siren, who uses their talents to filch or produce power. That’s why I’m here. I’m supposed to keep tabs on Bree until Marael shows up. Right now, I’m working in one of her underground gladiator rings as a cover.”
Fallon leans his elbows on his knees, contemplatively. “I’ll help you find the Siphon and protect her then.” My first instinct is to say no, but then I think it through. Perhaps it’s better if I have a backup. Especially if what he says about the prophecy is true. The urge to call Mikhail is almost too strong. Mikhail has always been a voice or reason. However, there’s no possible way that I’d bring him into this.
“Very well, you can stay here. I can use another pair of eyes. I’ll see if I can get you in the ring. Right now, I need to know more about Marael’s plan and the prophecy. Perhaps tomorrow we can go and speak to Creighton. Maybe he can shed some light on what the siphon’s power is.” I say thoughtfully.
Fallon does not respond. He simply sits there broodingly, staring off into the distance. Feeling exhausted, I rise from my seat and stretch my arms over my head. “You can stay in the room next door to mine. I have a match tomorrow. You can join me if you want. I can introduce you to Sahara and see if we can get you a gladiator spot at the club. Right now, I’m going to review the camera footage from the clubs. Hopefully, we find some footage with Marael in it, and this whole thing can be resolved swiftly.”
Fallon rises to follow and grasps my elbow. I look down at his hand and quirk a questioning brow. He scowls as he pulls his hand back in surprise. I guess he’s not used to touching other people. “I can look through the videos if you show me what she looks like. I don’t need to sleep.” He seems almost self-conscious as he tells me this. It’s odd because I can’t imagine Fallon having any kind of emotion that does not involve anger.
“Brilliant,” I say, taking a few steps towards the stairs. Then remembering something, I turn back to him. “By the way. Did Bree ever see your face?” Fallon stiffens with a shake of his head. “No, she was unconscious the whole time, even when I dropped her off at the hospital. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea that we meet, though.” I narrow my eyes. “Why?” He shrugs, looking uncomfortable. There’s definitely more to this than I'm sure he has told me. However, I don't pry. We all have our own secrets. Shrugging a shoulder, I shake my head and turn to the stairs. “Well, whatever you decide. It’s up to you, mate. The spare bedroom is over there. I’ll leave the surveillance laptop on your bed. Let me know if you find anything interesting.” I say, pointing to the room next to mine. “Good night, then,” I mutter calmly. He grunts in response and moves to the other room.
It looks like I have an ill-tempered roommate. Hopefully, we don't kill each other before all of this is over.
