When Ayr drove into the village and then took the slip road to the right of the roadworks, she slowed to a crawl so that Lek could inspect progress without getting out. She wound the window down and smiled at anyone who smiled nicely at her. The leading edge of the road was now more than two hundred yards past the shop, so she asked Ayr to stop from time to time so that she could make notes on her clipboard which she rested on the window frame so that everyone could see what she was doing. She knew that they must be wondering why she didn’t get out and look. She smiled to herself, she would show them why soon enough.
