Chapter 9 In the spring of 1918 the Great War began in earnest for America as American boys were sent over there in numbers of 300,000 troops a month. Optimism and Patriotism remained intact though fewer male faces were seen crossing the streets or driving cars. Husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers left to lend their support to their bedraggled comrades along the western front. Now, the Huns would be beaten into submission, many believed. Now, with American boys assisting their weary French and British allies, the war would find its rightful end. When American troops began moving across the Atlantic Ocean, my father received a government letter warning him against the pacifism he promoted in his columns.
