"My name is Johnson, by the way. This is my brother, Nate." Johnson said a little too happily as he extended his arm out to her.
She looked at his hand for a while and hesitantly took his hand and shook it. Jax was not happy about the touch. I mentally rolled my eyes at Jax' reaction and shook it off. She kept her eyes glued to her hands as she pulled away. I shot Johnson a look and he immediately leans back and looks away.
"I'm sorry about that. My brother can be a bit too much. Don't let him scare you." I said sweetly and softly.
"Why are you saying it in a way as if I'm a dangerous person?" he complained.
"Because you are!" I scoffed. "Anyways, Angelica... Please feel free to eat with us."
"I still have to work..." she muttered as she fiddled with her fingers.
"We already took care of that, and besides, think of it as taking a break." he smiled widely.
He's a little too eager with my mate.
"Johnson." I warned.
"Sorry..." he muttered low enough for me to hear and he kept his gaze down.
Angelica just seemed to be uncomfortable with the interaction between me and my brother. She, too, kept her gaze down. She seemed fidgety as if she just wanted to get up from the table and leave. I closed my eyes and sighed heavily.
"I'm sorry. You seem uncomfortable having to sit with us. Please, feel free to do whatever it is you need to do." I said.
Her head suddenly snapped up. Her eyes were swimming with thousands of questions, but instead of asking them she bit her lip and kept quiet for a couple of seconds. I looked down at her lips which were now a light shade of pink from the lip biting. I slowly looked back up at her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I just really have a lot to do. But maybe you can come by some other time when it's less hectic." she anxiously said.
I blinked my eyes a couple of times. I stared at her for what seemed like hours. Heat suddenly flooded her face and she shot her haze back on the floor.
"I mean... It's not that I'm forcing you to... I just really... Can't today... I wish I can and I feel bad for ditching you... But I do have a lot of work... I don't want to get in trouble." she stuttered badly through her words.
I slowly and carefully leaned in towards her and offered her a smile.
"Hey... It's okay. I understand. You don't have to force yourself to do things you don't want to do. I just wanted to do something nice for you." I quietly said.
She quickly muttered a thank you and head off to do the work she's been itching to do. She and her boss were quietly talking, it was too low for me to even hear. I looked at Johnson and he was staring at the two as well.
"I thought she was allowed to sit with us? Why does it seem like she's being scolded?" he quietly asked.
"Something just seems fishy here, or maybe we just came at the wrong time." I replied flatly.
A couple of minutes have passed and our orders came in. We stood up and collected the coffee. Angelica, however, kept her gaze down the entire time as she gave us our order. I furrowed my eyebrows but kept quiet as I took the plastic bags filled with cups of coffee.
"This is such a wonderful place, the ambiance is really good. We'll try to go back here again when we manage to get free time." I smiled at the manager.
"Thank you, sir! I'm Nikki by the way." she smiled as she extended her hand out.
I gave her a smile instead. She seemed disappointed that I didn't want to shake her hand.
"Angelica, you've been a wonderful server. Here." I said as I handed her a 50 banknote.
Her eyes widened at the huge amount that fell on her hands It was pretty clear now where she stood in life, and it made me even more determined to help her get out of the situation she was in.
"I can't accept this." she said.
I saw Nikki harshly elbow Angelica's sides, and Angelica visibly flinched. Jax was clawing his way out of control. He didn't like that someone hurt our mate.
"I insist. It isn't easy to make that much coffee in such a short period of time. You deserve it." I smiled.
"Thank you, sir." she stuttered.
I gave her another genuine smile before leaving the shop with Johnson.
"Are we coming back to this café?" he asked.
"We are. Something doesn't feel right, and I will get to the bottom of it if it's the last thing I do." I growled lowly.
"Looks like we're going to deal with caffeine infused wolves for a while." he joked in an attempt to lighten the situation.
"That's why I have you. You deal with the caffeine infused wolves, and I'll deal with my mate. She's human. She's fragile. Whatever it is that's happening that we don't know about, I will find out and bring her home with me where we can protect her." I said.
"We're all going to be behind you, Alpha." he reassured.
It didn't feel right as we walked further away from her. It feels as if I just left her to her doom and whatnot. I wanted to go back and make sure she was fine. That may be out of the question just to avoid suspicion. I don't want to be the one to cause further trouble since this isn't my territory, and using any sort of wolf instinct I have would be violating the treaty we made years ago.
"Everything is going to be fine, Alpha." he said once again.
"I just hope that walking away is the right choice made." I frowned.
