Marlie's POV
"Mine."
I stood there in his arms, eyes wide in shock. Did this man who I have never seen before just claim me as his? Did he just try to kill the guy I was dancing with? What the hell is going on?! I am pulled from my thoughts as I see Carter storming toward me, shouting for the guy to let go of me. The guy pulls away just a little, keeping his hands on my shoulders, looking me directly in the eyes with his beautiful deep blue ones.
"I said let go of her!" Carter grabbed the man's shoulder, yanking him back. "Don't touch her!" he growled.
"Who are you to command and defy me, mutt?" The man spoke, his deep voice full of authority. "You are not of alpha blood, therefore you have no say in what I do." He took Carter's hand off his shoulder, and Carter, who quickly realized his mistake, submitted instantly and showed his neck out of pure instinct. It was at this moment, that I realized everyone else had run out of the building, more than likely scared for their lives. It was just me, my brother, and the guy who claimed me.
"Excuse me," I spoke, my voice a little shaky as fear still rocked me to my core. "Can one of you please explain to me what is going on?" I asked timidly. Carter and the man exchanged several glances at one another before both turned back toward me.
"My name is Damian, and you, my love, are mine." Damian stepped toward me but Carter jumped in his way trying to block me from Damian's view.
"I don't care if you are an Alpha, I am not letting you hurt her!" A low growl erupted from Carter's chest, as he pulled me behind his body to protect me. It was clear the moment to me the moment he started growling like an animal that this guy was a werewolf, but hearing that he was an Alpha surprised me a lot. The only Alpha I had even met before was Alpha Caleb, the Alpha of our pack. I had never been around any others.
"I would never!" Damian roared. "Who are you to be so possessive of her anyway?" He balled his hands up into fists by his side, trying to control his anger.
"I'm her brother," Carter mumbled as I peered out from behind him. Damian stepped forward, sniffing the air around both of us before c*****g his head to the side and furrowing his eyebrows in question. He looked at Carter, who was quick to explain. "Our mother is a human and dad's a wolf."
"So you understand what we are?" Damian asked rhetorically. "That makes this easier."
"Makes what easier?" I asked and he looked at me and raised his eyebrows. I looked at Carter for help, but he was still staring Damian down with anger evident on his features.
"Do you mind if we speak in private, love?" Damian asked me, but he was looking at Carter while he spoke. My breath hitched in my throat; he called me 'love' again.
"No!" Carter lunged at Damian, growling viciously, but Damian didn't even flinch in response.
"Carter!" I called out to him and put my hand on his shoulder, instantly calming him a bit. "It's okay, I will be fine. Just give us a minute, please." For some reason, I trusted this man. At first, I was terrified of him, for good reason too, he was about to kill someone in front of me, but now something in me has changed and I feel the urge to trust him. I believe him when he says he would never hurt me, I just can't figure out why that is.
"Sis, I-" Carter started but stopped when he saw the look on my face. "I'll be outside," he mumbled, walking away.
"Finally," Damian sighed, walking towards me with his arms open wide like he wanted to hug me. I stepped away, putting my hands in front of me to stop him.
"What's wrong, love?"
"Tell me what is going on," I demanded, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Tell me, do you feel anything unusual?" He asked, a small smirk playing on his lips. "Maybe, excessive attraction towards me?" He tried to hide his smile but failed profusely. He was one c*cky son of a b*tch, that's for sure. I looked at him, really looked at him for the first time, and realized that he wasn't wrong. He was very attractive. So attractive, in fact, that it made my mouth water and my knees feel weak. I blushed bright red as he chuckled at my expression. I looked away and took a deep breath to try and calm my racing heart, but instead, my nose filled with the most incredible aroma- lemons and water lilies. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply again, smiling to myself.
"I see you've noticed my scent as well." I turned to look at Damian while he spoke. He reached out, touching my arm, making me feel sparks. I quickly jumped back away from him and he chuckled once again.
"What was that? What is all of this?" I asked, touching the part of my arm where the sparks still resonated across my skin.
"You're telling me that you don't know what all of these things together mean?" He asked, a look of surprise on his face. I thought for a moment about where I might've heard these things before. Then all of a sudden it hit me like a light switch and I gasped. When Carter and I were younger, our dad would tell us stories about how he met our mother and their relationship.
"Mate," I whispered, but, of course, Damian could hear it with his werewolf hearing. He reached out and pulled me into his arms, looking at my face with the biggest smile. I sighed and gave in to his hold, relishing in the pleasurable sparks coursing through my body. I actually have a mate.
Damian held me in his arms for some time before I pulled away. I led us hand in hand out the door to see Carter waiting nearby, leaning against a tree. He looked at me and then at our hands, a frown quickly appearing on his face.
"Carter," I started as we got closer to him. "I have something very important to tell you. Damian is my mate."
"No," Carter gasped in disbelief, shaking his head. "No, it can't be. Not him."
"What do you mean 'not him'?" I asked, eyeing Carter suspiciously before looking over at Damian.
"It seems you and your family have things to talk about." Damian turned me towards him. "I will talk to you later, my love." He lifted my hand to his lips and gave it the softest kiss, making me instantly turn crimson.
"Let's go, Marlie," Carter mumbled, turning to walk towards his car. He only called me by my name when he was mad.
I looked up at the moon before following him. I can't remember exactly what I heard about mates, but I recall being told that the 'Moon Goddess' blesses people with them, and I was just glad she gave me one too.
***
We walked into the front door and instantly saw mom and dad in the kitchen, looking at us expectantly. I furrowed my eyebrows, looking at Carter, quite confused about why they were waiting for us.
"Mindlink." He answered simply, pushing me further into the room. "We need to have a conversation with you."
"Come, let's go to my office to talk," Dad spoke softly, but his face was stone cold. I followed him upstairs, my brother and mother close behind. My father sat behind his desk and I sat on a chair in front of his desk, my brother by my side, while my mother stood behind my father.
"Sooooo?" I spoke up after an uncomfortable silence.
"Sooooo," My father mimicked me. "Tell me what happened today." He folded his hands, setting them on the desk in front of him.
"I met my mate," I replied simply, still not understanding where this was going.
"How do you know he is your mate?"
"The attraction, scent, tingly feeling wherever he touches. It took me a minute but I remembered you describing what it felt like when you met mom." I played with my hands, uncomfortable now that everyone's eyes were on me.
"Tell me this man's name."
"Damian," I replied quickly, looking up at my father with hopeful eyes.
"Alpha Damian." Carter specified, not looking away from me. My father sighed and my mother rubbed his shoulders, still looking down at me with concern.
"Why are you guys mad? Shouldn't you be happy for me?"
"Sweetheart, of course, we are happy that you have found your mate." My mother looked down at me, a small smile on her lips.
"Then why are you guys acting like it's the worst thing in the world?"
"Alpha Damian is the most ruthless Alpha in the country. He only has a small pack, but he acts as if he has so much more. He's been known to kill people the second they cross his path, not giving them a chance to explain themselves." My father explained. "He doesn't work with any packs around them and has killed many other packs’ pack members just for being too close to his borders. All they wanted to do was talk with him about becoming allies, but he didn't even give them the chance to speak."
"He is dangerous, you don't need to be anywhere around him." Carter stood up, his clenched fists shaking with anger.
"He's my mate!" I shouted. "You can't tell me what to do!" I found it hard to be that this man I met could be dangerous. I mean sure he almost killed someone in front of me, but that was because that someone he saw as a threat to his mate. If he really were like my father and Carter say, then I have a feel Carter wouldn't have made it out of that club alive.
"Marlie," My father snarled. "You do not speak to your brother like that. Carter is right, I will not allow you to be around him, it is not safe." He finished. I slammed my hands down on the table and turned to storm out of the room, yanking the door open.
"At least we all found our mates?"
I quickly spun back around, looking Carter dead in the eyes. "What did you say?"
"Heh, surprise?" Carter said softly, biting his lip. "I wanted to tell you earlier but couldn't find the right time; I found my mate! She is actually from Black River pack, I met her after I had stayed there for about a month. We spent the last five months together. I actually only came here to stay for a few days before heading back to move in with her." He spilled the words out in his excitement.
"Well, congratu-f*cking-lations." I scoffed. "You get to be with your mate and live happily ever after." I rolled my eyes before storming out and locking myself in my bedroom. Too many thoughts were swirling through my head and I felt extremely dizzy as I collapsed on the bed. Carter has found his mate, and he is leaving me to go be with her? What am I going to do without him here? He is my life, my best friend! Not to mention, I am mated to the most handsome guy in the world, yet I am forbidden from ever seeing him again. What the hell has this day become?
I toss and turn for a while, thoughts running through my mind at a mile a minute, overwhelming me profusely. I just don't understand, he was so sweet to me. How can he be as bad as my dad and brother say he is?
