Chapter 5 - Jack´s Will

1116 Words
Jay POV My team gave me a week off to mourn, and after setting the resting ashes of my brother in the mausoleum, I decided to make the best out of this free time. After stopping by the hospital and hearing she was stable and unconscious, I decided to call Shane. “Hey, Shane… you told me to stop by your office. Would this be a good time?” I asked, and he agreed to meet me in an hour. An hour later, I was sitting in front of a mahogany desk while Shane sat between the big desk and a huge bookcase full of legal hardcover, leather-bound books. “So, your brother was a comprehensive man…” Shane said, and I took a deep breath. I had no idea why Jack thought about having a will at this young age, but he did leave one and instructions regarding his family. “I guess so…” I mumbled, and Shane chuckled, “I am sure you haven´t even thought about the possibility of an accident…” He said, and I nodded. “Of course not. I don´t want to think about dying yet.” I said, and he nodded. “As CEO of a big enterprise, he was advised to have his matters in order…” Shane said, and I nodded. Well, it was a piece of good advice, but I wouldn´t have listened if it were me. Thankfully, that advice was given to Jack, who did what was best for all. I thoroughly appreciated that one because a man with as significant assets as my brother, many bounty hunters would expect to see if they could get a chunk of it. “So, first things first,” Shane said, opening a sealed envelope. He retrieved another sealed envelope from it. “This is for you,” he said, handing me the envelope and stood up. I will leave you to read this alone. Once you are done and ready for the rest, press this button.” He pointed at a buzzer, and I nodded. “With trembling hands, I picked up the envelope and opened its seal. I retrieved a piece of paper; “Dear brother, If you are reading this letter, it means something happened before we could patch things up. I wanted to tell you first and foremost that I am so very sorry for the way I talked to you. That night is a night I will always regret for the rest of my existence. That night, not only was I mean and selfish, but I managed to lose my brother, the man I admired and the man I trusted with my life. I have never minded the sacrifices required to keep us both afloat. I have never minded that you got to fulfill your dreams while I had to put mine on pause for many years. I had put them on pause gladly, and that pause allowed you the peace of mind to fulfill your dreams. Let me tell you something: My dreams came true. Allie was my long-lost dream, and as such, I want to ask you to take care of her. Make sure she copes with my absence and forgives me for leaving her behind.” I read and almost choked on his words, “I love her as much as I have loved Mom, Dad, and you…Try to forget about that awful night and remember the good times because those are the ones I will cherish for an eternity, Love you, brother, Always, Jack,” I have never cried more in my entire life. My brother is gone, and his last words were of love, giving me closure. What great gift he has given me! I closed my eyes, cleared my tears, and buzzed Shane back into his office. “Are you alright?” He asked, and I slowly nodded. “Now, let me tell you the clauses of his will. Allie is to be protected by a trust fund that will ensure her well-being for two lifetimes. The house is hers. The shares, businesses, and the rest of it will be yours. He is putting you in charge of your family legacy. His only condition is that Chipmunk Creators will be returned to Allie as the sole owner and CEO. In the chance of offspring between him and Allie, another trust fund will ensure their livelihood.” Shane kept reading clause after clause, trying to break them down from the legal banter to regular wording. He sighed and closed his eyes, “So, that´s it… plain and simple… You are now in charge of the company. The trust funds will protect Allie and the baby. The house and her company will return to Allie…” Shane said, and I sighed, “How am I supposed to cope with his workload and my career?” I lifted my gaze, and he nodded. “You can either be the CEO or hire a capable one, and you should only attend board meetings,” Shane said, and I nodded. “But I don´t have time to hire a capable one…” I sighed. I was overwhelmed and completely out of my comfort zone. “Let me search for capable men with what it requires, and you can interview them to make a final choice…” He said, and I thanked him, “Shane, I am not my brother. I don´t have the mind of an entrepreneur…but I will do my best to make the right choices to preserve his legacy…” I sighed, and he indeed did. “What about Allie?” he asked, and I lifted my eyebrows, not knowing where this question was going. “What about her? I have seen her three times, all of them while she is unconscious…” I said, and he sighed. “She has a high-risk pregnancy, and we don´t know if she lost her memories…” He paused, “What are you willing to do for your brother´s baby?” He asked, “For Allie to be fine to give birth to his baby?” That was a f*****g good question; what was I willing to sacrifice for them? What was I willing to sacrifice for my brother, the one who sacrificed his youth to protect me from the responsibilities that burdened both of us when our parents died? The answer was a big, “I don´t know…” I muttered, deep in thought. There were so many variables in play that it was difficult to make a clear decision about Alison Fox.
