Chapter 8 - The Danger that Precedes Death

Almost two days had passed since Zheng Jin started hunting Five-tailed Crimson Rats. He had not slept nor did he have the time to eat. The reason for this is that he actually underestimated the numbers of the rats that he just encountered.

After countless of hours of killing Five-tailed Crimson Rats, Zheng Jin finally got a point. It was a lot of work, but finally seeing an end to it, Zheng Jin felt satisfaction.

"So there's a limit to the points...*sigh...No matter, I'd get a skill from it anyway..."

But after seeing that the skill had a limit on how many points it could have, Zheng Jin felt disappointed. He initially planned to collect up to 11 points, so that he could choose between three 10★ skills; but seeing that there was a limit on how many points he could collect for now, his plan went up in smoke.

After a few moments of thinking, he eventually accepted the loss. After all, sooner or later, those 10★ skills would be available for him anyway.

"*Cough, those rats really got me good. Who knew that their whole ancestry was here...fuck!"

Zheng Jin said as he looked all over his body. He was now covered in b****y scratches and bruises. And on his back, a small, but deep gash kept on bleeding.

The battle that just took place was so intense that Zheng Jin, who had trained extensively on his swordsmanship in his previous world, felt overwhelmed. He felt that way, not because the rats were stronger than him, but their sheer numbers really were shocking.

After counting, the rats that he killed in these two days was 57!

"Well, rats are rats even in this world after all..."

Zheng Jin mused. He then went to where he kept his belongings and got a cone-shaped fruit from his bag. He had gotten this fruit from earlier when he was training.

According to the book of herblore he had brought with him, this fruit, named "Devil's Coagulation Fruit", was actually poisonous. However, it had a bit of regenerative properties when applied directly to an open wound.

"This book better not lie to me this time..."

Zheng Jin then crushed the fruit, then applied the liquid onto his cuts and lower back. The process was actually quite painful, but the book already warned Zheng Jin beforehand, thus he was not really bothered by it. He had endured a lot more than this, he thought.

After applying the fruit's liquid all over his wounds, Zheng Jin then walked over towards the Five-tailed Crimson Rat's corpses he had piled up in one heap beforehand. He, of course, wanted to collect the cores of each and every one of them.

After all, besides the point that he got for his skill, he was also after the profit that these little rat's cores will give him.

It took Zheng Jin some time, but he eventually collected all of the cores. He did not know how much do these cores sell for, but even a bit of spirit stones may come a long way. After all, he was quite poor right now...not only that, he did not even know if the previous Zheng Jin had kept some spirit stones for himself.

"Now then, time to finally get my reward..."

After doing everything that needed to be done, it was now time to use the skill [God's Generosity]. He looked forward to this, after all, all his hard work these past few days had been for this. Zheng Jin took a deep breath and calmed his nerves. He now had the choice of using a point to give him a choice between three random 2★ skills/attributes or getting a random 3★ skill/attribute.

Zheng Jin thought very carefully. This skill may decide his fate in this early stage of his journey, so he needed to make the best choice right now.

"I think it would be better to get a 3★ for now..."

In the end, Zheng Jin decided to go for a 3★. He thought that choosing between three 2★ skills or attributes may not be as good as a 3★. At least not now when the skill and attribute's rarity were too low.

Zheng Jin did not know what to think at the moment. He really hoped to get an offensive skill, or maybe even a defensive one. But this attribute...he didn't know what to think of it. Sure, this skill gives him some utility, but he did not think it will help him that much when fighting...

"I'll just make it work. There's a use in every skill and attribute after all..."

After being silent for quite a while, Zheng Jin then shrugged it off. Doubting the attribute he just got won't help him. And besides, he already thought of ways to use this attribute to his advantage, given his current strength.

A few moments had passed when Zheng Jin opened his status window, wanting to see just how much he improved these past few days.

Zheng Jin's thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a loud crash of what he assumed to be a tree falling down, followed by a loud roar. He then fought through his injuries and climbed a tall tree nearby to see what the commotion was about.

What he saw made his eyes fly wide open in shock.

"A Horned Fire Ape and a Dark-eyed Shadow Wolf! They're not supposed to be here!"

Not only that, but he also saw a huge number of demon beasts pouring out of the deep forest like ants. They were all at the Awakened Mortal level!

Zheng Jin had every right to be shocked. High-level demon beasts like these were not supposed to be here in the first place!

"Damn, I have to get back to the city for now..."

From what he knew about these demon beasts, he was absolutely no match for them right now. Even running from them when he is caught will be quite hard, especially from that Dark-eyed Shadow Wolf.

With that, Zheng Jin got down from the tree and ran towards the city as fast as he could. For now, he had to delay his training until after he found out just what had caused the sudden outpour of the demon beasts in this area.

After running for a few seconds, Zheng Jin's hair on the back of his neck suddenly stood up, giving him a cold feeling. This one...he had felt a lot of times as an adventurer.
