Two Hours Later...
- Aurora Cameron -
The back door of the house slams shut upstairs, bringing me from my daze and wiping the happy smile from my lips.
After leaving Elixir Lake, I dropped Tucker off, so he was able to retrieve his truck from his mother's. Everyone had left when we came back and I was somewhat grateful for that. I can still feel the embarrassment of the quick escape I made earlier.
On the drive home, I received a text from Tabby asking if everything was all right and another from Tucker stating that he would be arriving around eight tonight, which gives me the perfect amount of time to doll myself up and tell Dad where I'm going. I replied to Tabby telling her I was alright and not to worry.
"Rora, honey, you down there?" Dad's voice calls down the stairs of the basement a moment later.
"Yeah," I call back. "I'll be up in a minute."
"Alright, baby girl."
I try to leave Spade on my bed and head upstairs, but he follows anyway, meowing insistently. I pick him up from his position at my feet and cradle him to my chest. He begins to purr and cuddle into me.
"Crazy kitty," I mutter as my feet hit the linoleum of the kitchen. "Daddy needs to find you a woman."
I hear a snort and look up. "He's got three already, darlin'. The little dude gets more p***y than any guy on the block," he says, making me laugh hysterically.
I wipe the tears from my eyes when I calm and set Spade down on the floor. I occupy a seat at the table and Dad slides a cup of coffee in front of me. I instantly take a sip, savoring the strong punch of caffeine.
I sigh in pleasure and set the cup back down. "I needed that boost. Thanks, Pop."
He smirks, coming to sit across from me. "No problem, sugar. Long day?"
I nod and rest my chin on the palm of my hand. "You could say that. Brunch didn't go as well as I envisioned."
A frown replaces the smirk. "Somethin' happen?"
I shrug and decide to give him the rundown on what happened. "Then, he asked me out and is taking me to dinner later tonight," I finish my explanation.
We sit there in silence afterwards. I'm beginning to worry when Dad sighs and says, "If Tuck does anything you don't like, tell me and I'll take care of it. Alright, baby girl?"
"Daddy, I don't think-"
He waves a hand in a dismissive gesture. "I'm just making a point, Rora. I wasn't around to advise you about the mind of a man, so I'm making up for lost time," he states. "In that case, Tucker and I need to talk."
Great, something to look forward to.
* * *
"What could he possibly want to talk with Tucker about?" I question myself and Spade, who is seated on my bed with his head tilted to the side as he watches me dress.
I sigh. "Guess I'll just have to wait and see," I mutter.
After putting on the lace black dress I'm wearing tonight, I check my makeup and hair in the mirror. As I'm finishing my touch up, I hear a truck outside and race to the front door. Tucker's black Dodge truck sits outside and I see him coming up the path to the front door.
He smiles when he sees me with the door open and says, "Hey, gorgeous."
I blush as a smile of my own creeps across my cheeks. "Hey," I tell him, stepping onto the deck.
"You ready to go, babe?" He asks.
I nod. "Yeah, I just have -" I start to say, but Dad's voice cuts me off.
Both Tucker and I turn around to find him standing only a few feet away, a serious look on his face and his eyes on Tucker.
"You and I need to talk."
