Unknown POV
“Are you sure that’s the right girl?”
“Yes I’m sure. That’s the only Camille Dubeau that’s the proper age in Oregon. Her father’s family name is Bronson but I believe after he left, her mother made her go by her maiden name. She’s harder to track that way because the Dubeau lineage is almost non-existent now.” I explain to my concerned Beta, Jonathon.
We’ve been tracking a girl named Camille for a couple years because we believe she’s the prophesied Luna. My prophesied Luna. When I was eighteen I had a dream… More like a vision in my sleep of the Moon Goddess and a girl named Camille who I had never heard of nor seen before. The Moon Goddess told me she was my destined mate and she was in danger. Shortly after that we started doing some research into our werewolf history and we found out that there’s said to be a Luna of original blood born in this century and she’s supposedly extremely powerful. The Moon Goddess is our higher power who chooses our fates and all our mates long before we’re even born. The only thing she told me was that her name was Camille. It’s taken over two years to dig far enough back into our history to be able to put two and two together in our modern time.
“Camille’s father must’ve had a good reason to take off like he did. Makes me think he specifically did it to protect her.” Says Jonathon.
“I was thinking the same thing.”
He was a powerful Alpha’s son but he was the younger brother of two so he never became Alpha himself when he turned eighteen. He left home after his eighteenth birthday after not finding his mate right away. Supposedly he wanted to find a pack of his own and have his own chance to be Alpha. After that he apparently backpacked all over the world for a few years until he settled down with a woman and had a daughter. Whether that woman was his mate or not no one knows. But she was assumed to be an Alpha’s daughter from another powerful werewolf pack in France. No one has solid proof but all these assumptions are recorded in our history books that the elders keep safely locked away.
“La Force Pack that Camille’s mother is supposedly from suddenly disappeared and they haven’t been heard from since around the year of Camille’s birth, right?”
“Right.” I respond to my Gamma, Avery.
These guys have been my right hand boys since we were walking age. Their fathers were the previous Beta and Gamma, alongside my father when he was Alpha. They’ve been working tirelessly for the past two years to help me try to find my mate and their Luna.
No one knows the true reason behind La Force Pack suddenly vanishing but I believe it has something to do with Camille. I think we’ve finally found her whereabouts based on her mother’s family name. Dubeau was the last recorded family name of La Force Pack from France and there’s only one Camille Dubeau on the western side of the US let alone Oregon. Don’t tell me how I know she’s in the US, I can just sense it. I’ve had a weird feeling that she’s been nearby for a year or so.
“Okay so are we sending a team to go retrieve her if you finally know her whereabouts or…?”
“Retrieve her?” I stare at Avery like he has a third eyeball. “She’s a woman, not a package I’ve been waiting for in the mail.”
“My apologies Alpha, I didn’t mean it like that.”
I shake my head quickly and rest my hands on the table in front of me, leaning my weight onto the table.
“I know you didn’t. But we can’t all show up to her house at once. It could scare the s**t out of her. She may not even know what or who she is if she’s lived a human life for so long.”
“Right. So what is your plan?” Asks Jonathon.
“My plan is to approach her out in the open, just me. I want her to willingly come back to the territory with me.”
“You’d be unprotected if you went alone.” Avery folds his arms across his chest.
“I won’t need protection. I don’t believe anyone else has found her whereabouts so as of right now we’re the only ones who know where she is.”
“You’re probably right. The vampires won’t even know where to begin looking if they don’t have any of our history books and the warlocks and witches would need either her blood or a belonging of hers to track her by magic.” Jonathon leans on the table across from me.
Avery silently nods but I can tell he doesn’t like the idea of me going alone.
“Here’s what I’ll do. You two can come, along with Brock, and a couple other of our lead warriors. BUT… You need to stay hidden and let me do this on my own. Understood?”
“Yes Alpha.” They all respond in unison.
Brock, my head trainer and best warrior who had been quiet the entire meeting, leaves the room immediately to round up a couple other wolves for the trip.
“I’m coming too.”
A voice suddenly calls out from the doorway of my office.
“Mom? No. I’d really prefer you stay here and prepare for Camille’s arrival. Please.”
“I’m sorry son but mother trumps Alpha. I’m coming so I can meet my daughter-in-law-to-be properly. She might need a woman to convince her.” She smiles and winks.
“Always so charming.” Jonathon chuckles and puts a hand on my moms shoulder as he leaves my office.
I huff and drop my head. My mom has been acting as Luna until I find my mate so she’s around the pack house more often than not dealing with Luna matters.
“Fine. But please, let me do the initial introduction.”
“Yes Alpha.” She grins and turns on her heels.
Just like that she’s gone again.
“Your mom really has a way, hey?”
“Tell me about it.” I sigh at Avery.
She’s the most charming, sweet talker in the entire pack, which is a strong Luna attribute. Her dirty blonde hair and dark blue eyes make me her clone right down to the beauty mark beneath her left eye. My dad on the other hand has brunette hair and brown eyes. My younger brother has my dads brunette hair but my moms blue eyes.
Unlike some younger brothers who become estranged when they don’t become Alpha, my little brother almost didn’t give a s**t. In fact he brags often about how he doesn’t have to run a pack AND a contracting company at the same time. Although he’s only seventeen, so he has other priorities right now.
Next month is my brothers eighteenth birthday and we’ll hold a party and ceremony where he’ll shift for the first time into his wolf. It’s customary to do that when a pack member turns eighteen, especially if they’re part of a high-ranking family.
I’m nervous to see if he’ll find his mate right away or not. I certainly didn’t and it’s been quite the headache trying to find her. Being a stupid man, I’ve slept around a little bit more than I’d like to admit. I needed a way to unleash frustration and pent up emotions. I’ve regretted it every single time and so for the past five months I’ve been abstinent, hoping to save a bit of my dignity before I find my Luna. I’m not sure my brother cares enough about finding his mate as I do. I know for a fact he’s no virgin.
“I’ll hold another de-briefing meeting tomorrow and then we’ll head out of here before 9am.” I nod to Avery.
“Yes Alpha.” He leaves the room as well.
Jonathon will be working on travel arrangements until tomorrow and it’s Avery’s job to oversee our pack warriors. I have too much to do to stress about tomorrow, so for now I’ll leave it to them and focus on company arrangements while I’m gone. My pack, the Silver Falls Pack, has around fifteen hundred members and is the third largest pack in the US. We have great alliances with the other large packs and my father passed down Argenti Contracting to me once I became Alpha. Argenti is our family name and we’ve been the leaders of the Silver Falls Pack for the last five hundred years. Argenti Contracting has been our family company for the last four generations and is now one of the biggest contracting companies in the US.
After becoming Alpha, I’ve since sold some of our land to the humans who’ve turned part of it into the Silver Falls State Park. It was important to me to have part of the land protected and it’s now seen by many tourists worldwide. Our pack territory resides just outside the outskirts of the State Park and we have some of the best security measures so no humans wander onto the territory by mistake.
I spend the remainder of the night alone in my office finalizing contracts with clients. I drag my feet to bed but can’t seem to fall asleep so I end up choosing my outfit for tomorrow and packing a bag for a few days, not knowing how long our trip will be. I desperately beg the Moon Goddess that Camille will like me. It’s crazy to think I already know so much about her and she doesn’t even know I exist.
After packing an unnecessary amount of clothes and personal items, I flop onto my large king-sized bed and finally close my heavy eyelids.
~
I wake up bright and early at 5am to attend our daily training session. Brock leads like a champ, as per usual, and we finish just in time for breakfast at 7. I finally convince my mom to stay back and allow me to handle my first encounter with my mate. I bribed her with getting her to shop for Camille’s wardrobe and stock her walk in closet in our master bedroom. She seemed more than happy to do that.
Our de-briefing goes well and we leave the territory in our black Tahoe’s at 9am on the dot. Three hours and we’ll arrive at our destination.
I stare out the window the entire time letting my thoughts run wild. What will she look like? Will she like me? What if she hates me? What if she doesn’t come back to the territory with me? What if I have the wrong girl all along and have to start my search over again?? I’m anxious to meet her and get to know her for who she is. Most of my pack doesn’t know of what’s going on because until we find her I wanted to keep it on the down-low. Both her parents are suspected to be from strong Alpha bloodlines so I can only imagine how powerful and special she is.
The closer we get to our destination the more a calm feeling washes over me.
~
“If she’s not home then where could she be?” Asks Avery.
“Many places. She could be at work, out running errands, who knows.” Jonathon shrugs.
I approached her condo alone like I wanted, but headed back to my group quickly when I figured out she wasn’t home.
“I’m not just going to wait around for her to show up and scare her so I’m going to go out looking.” I explain to the guys.
“Do you even know where to look? She could be anywhere, like I said.”
“I’m aware she could be anywhere, Jonathon. I have a feeling I can find her.”
“A feeling, huh?” Avery raises an eyebrow.
“Yes. A feeling. Don’t ask, just trust me.”
“Yes Alpha.” Both Avery and Jonathon say in unison.
Jonathon is as loyal as they come. He would bend over backwards for myself and our pack. I almost never have to use my Alpha tone on him. He’s honest, empathetic and selfless. All the attributes you’d want in a Beta. His jet black hair and dark brown eyes paired with his muscular stature and tattoos make him appear rough and tough but he’s a big teddy bear on the inside. Avery on the other hand isn’t as reserved. He’s the wild one in our group. His brunette hair and ice blue eyes make him irresistible to women which he happily obliges to. His strong headed and stubborn demeanour make him a great Gamma but boy are we ever opposites.
I take off in my Tahoe by myself in an unknown direction to find my Luna. I don’t know where I’m going or what I’m going to do when I find her but my body urges me forward nonetheless. I’ve come this close, I’m not stopping now.
My intuition takes me to a large mall. I’ve never actually been here before, so once again I wander aimlessly. That is until I enter the mall cafeteria and get a whiff of the most amazing smell I’ve ever come across. Like a vanilla and raspberry fusion, my mouth immediately begins to water. I follow the smell to a smoothie bar, which makes a lot of sense and I start to wonder if it’s the fruity smoothies I’ve been smelling. Then I see her. The most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life. She has ash-blonde hair and green eyes that threaten to take the air from my lungs. Her body is out of this world and better than anything I ever could’ve dreamt up. She has the most perfect sun-kissed skin and the tiniest of freckles on her face.
MATE
My wolf starts to go crazy and it takes everything in me to remain composed. She suddenly makes dead eye contact with me and I realize I’ve been staring for an awkwardly long period of time. I immediately shake myself out of my haze.
“Oh, let me buy that for you.” I blurt out as she orders her mango smoothie.
My face goes immediately pink. Why couldn’t I have said something smarter than that?! Geez.
“Oh. Are you sure? Thanks.” She smiles and I nearly melt into the floor at her feet.
Her voice is like music to my ears. I go to open my mouth to say something else but the woman she’s with makes a loud squealing sound and she drags her loud friend off before I get a chance to introduce myself. Dammit. It would be weird if I followed her so I accept my defeat and go back to my pack members waiting for me.
When I get back to the group we decide to stay in a hotel for the night and I’ll try again tomorrow. I think it would be odd if I showed up at her place after the smoothie incident. I can’t help but wonder why she didn’t feel the mate bond like I did. Maybe she did and just didn’t act on it? What if she’s been living as a human for so long that her wolf is that suppressed? I have a feeling she really doesn’t know who or what she is. I pray to the Moon Goddess that things will go smoothly for me tomorrow.
“Ugh I’m so glad this hotel has a vending machine.” Avery says as he snacks on some Doritos while he lounges on the couch.
“It also has room service you moron.” Jonathon chuckles as he hangs up the phone after ordering himself dinner.
“Ah shit.” Avery blurts as realization crosses his face.
I chuckle along with Jonathon and shake my head.
They’ve been extremely patient and understanding throughout this whole process. It has made me appreciate them even more than I already did before.
“Ugh Katherine is really getting on my nerves. I think I should dump her.” Avery ponders out loud as he tosses his Doritos wrapper into the trash can across the room.
“Oh no. Your girlfriend of six weeks? You sure?” I ask sarcastically.
“Hey! I’ve been with worse for longer! I’m just over the whole fling thing I think.”
“It’s about time!” Jonathon exhales deeply at Avery’s words.
“Easy for you to say, mister I’m perfect I don’t need a girlfriend or s*x!” Avery protests.
“You’re right. I don’t need a girlfriend. Because I know that my mate is somewhere out there most likely waiting for me.” Jonathon explains. “But trust me, going without s*x is not easy!”
“I don’t know how you do it man.” Avery shakes his head side to side.
“It’s called self control.” Jonathon claps back.
“Ouch!” Avery shouts.
I can’t help but laugh out loud. They’re so different sometimes I wonder how we all complete each other so well. They continue to bicker for a bit until Jonathon’s room service arrives. Avery watches on with envy until he decides to order himself food as well. I don’t have the appetite for dinner and I decide to call it an early night. That night I don’t sleep much, tossing and turning… dreaming of the goddess that is my mate.
