Chapter Four: Rollercoaster

1323 Words
MYRA I'm a standing emotional mess. Since we had concluded that this attractive chunk of a man owned this house, I was struggling to stay here. I felt so stupid. How had I not noticed that it was a non secured website? I was going to blame the fact that I had been excited about what the vacation could hold in store for me and Daniel. I took a deep breath as I once again heard the mechanical voice tell me that Daniel was unreachable and I could leave a voicemail. My screen lights up and since I’m holding it, there’s no pseudo hope here as I pick up on Helene’s first ring. “Hey girl! I had assumed you would be too busy to pick up.” She said teasingly and I was sure if she was right here, she would wriggle her brows, it was her favorite facial expression. “As if.” I scoffed. “Daniel isn’t even here yet.” “Are you serious!?” She exclaims from the other end and I wished she was actually the one here right now instead of the man lounging with a glass of wine in hand and looking in my direction from across the room. It’s uncomfortable talking with Helene about Daniel being a jerk with this man watching him. His presence and masculinity is overwhelming and it’s simply hard to ignore that he’s in the same room as me despite how big and furnished the living room was. I’m finally tired of standing and decided to take a sit as I settled in one of the comfy couches and I pulled my baggy top that was the only real piece of cloth I had brought to stop it from hiking up. “Have you been able to reach out to him?” He asked as he took a sip of his wine and for a second there, I wanted to either have that wine or be the wine. The relishing look on that attractive face with his eyes closed and head thrown back to down the remaining wine in the glass brought thoughts I shouldn’t be having to my virgin mind. I shake those annoying and nasty thoughts out of my mind just before he opens those green orbs. “No. That was my friend earlier. I’m guessing he had met with some trouble on his way here. I’m sure he will be here soon.” I say again to reassure him but somehow, I think it was more to reassure myself. He nods, stands up and then leaves. **** I can’t believe I had slept off on the couch, with a stranger in the same house. My phone is still on my lap and checking the time on it as my heart sinks with the empty screen. There’s no missed call notifications at 6pm in the evening! At this point, I don’t need a soothsayer to know that Daniel wasn’t coming and I couldn’t help the hot tears that rolled down my cheeks that soon turned into loud sobs and for a minute or rather some moments, my mind thinks I’m all alone and I let myself express my hurt. I had anticipated this vacation. It wasn’t a full blown vacation but it was a different scenery and more than ten times better than Daniel’s house. I had even gotten scammed along the way and booked him a birthday cake. I couldn’t believe that he had really come. Even though my mind and brain is certain that Daniel and I were done, my heart was trying to find excuses for him. I wipe my tears with my palms as I stood up. Since he wasn’t coming, there was no need to stay here anymore. Everything I had brought was a little box and I only needed to go upstairs to change into the outfits I had worn here. They had been left to dry earlier. My heart jolts with surprise and a little bit of shame when I see him standing there watching me. How long had he been standing there? Had he seen me bawl my eyes just now? I avoid his gaze and March upstairs changing in a record breaking time since I don’t bother to pull off the lingerie. He’s just where I left him. “I’m sorry for intruding and if you need any more information on the fraudsters, just reach out to me with this. Thank you very much.” I was sincerely grateful that he had allowed me to stay this long. While the man clearly had his gaze fastened on me, he didn’t take the card and I withdrew my hand. It was stupid of me to think that a man that had a house this big would actually need my help in catching a small time this small time fraudster. “It’s quite late and these areas are water logged. You can stay here till morning and then take off then.” I’m surprised at his words and his offer and I look at him suspiciously. He had seemed quite eager to get me off his property earlier. I looked out and as much as I wanted it to be a different result, it was truly dark outside already. Staying was a better option and I wasn’t such a rugged driver like that. I nodded. “Thank you.” I say and then strode into the kitchen. I needed water and food. I hadn’t eaten anything all day and I’m glad that hunger didn’t actually wake me. Since I hadn’t ended up buying anything here thinking the whole house had been stocked by the rental agency, all I had that was edible was my cake. I had several reasons why it was now ‘’ my cake’ at that point. “Would you like to have some cake? It’s really nice and freshly made.” I stop astride into the kitchen. Offering him was the only sane thing to do and so I did that. He looked at me for a few seconds and then nodded. “I’ll have some” While I’m trying to cut the cake, he comes into the kitchen and I think about how I should ask for his name but instead my brain is thinking of how small the kitchen suddenly becomes with his overwhelming presence. He was really manly and attractive. A quite lethal combination when it came to charming a girl’s panties off. A lot of men aren’t huge fans of cakes and sugary desserts and so while I cut a large as hell piece for myself, intending to take it to my room to eat while mourning my horrible day, I cut only a small slice for him. “Here.” I said turning around and I’m startled when I saw how close he was. I hadn’t realized he was at my back and not doing something else and my heart thumped in its rib cage at his closeness. I looked up at him and into those green orbs that had a shadow of a smirk on them. “Here’s your cake.” “Why is mine the smaller one? I would assume that since you are the guest, the home owner deserves a larger portion.” He adds immediately after and I’m embarrassed and flustered. In this kitchen right here, I was certain he could see exactly how I was feeling. “You can have this then” I said, placing the one I had cut for myself on the kitchen counter and scurrying off. I only stop when I’m in the hallway that leads to the room downstairs where I had slept in last night. I glanced behind me just out of caution as I calmed my racing heart. I only had to make sure nothing happened tonight and by tomorrow, I would be well off on my way back home.
