MYRA
I ran upstairs back immediately and grabbed a robe glancing behind me to be certain he wasn’t following me. If this was a killer, he would have run after me right?
After getting a robe, I stay in my room as I’m wondering if going back down was a smart option.
However, my phone’s downstairs as I had left it there after talking to Daniel. If he was someone with bad intentions, There’s no way I can call for help by staying up here.
I look around for any possible weapon that could be here and one is my electric shaving stick and a lamp vase. I considered taking the rods used to hang the curtain. I could certainly reach it if I climb the bedside table but I wonder what would happen if I’m charged for murder or for destroying someone’s property.
I finally took my shaving stick and my heels that were supposed to of course complete the beautiful outfit I was supposed to use to welcome my boyfriend that wasn’t here yet.
Right at that moment, I wonder what Daniel would think if he came right now and saw that stranger here. Would he perhaps think I was cheating on him? He had been quite cranky and suspicious for a while.
I shake those thoughts out of my head. Of all the terrible things that could happen to me, Daniel was the least of them right now.
When I come out of the room, he’s right outside the door and from this close distance I can see him up close and damn! This was definitely the kind of man that Helene would see in her dreams.
He’s drop dead gorgeous and somehow, it sort of made me feel a little calmer.
Evil people didn’t come in such attractive packages like this right? He had clear green eyes that were filled with annoyance and irritation at what I didn’t know. His entire body was well built and he was unbelievably tall. His physique also reminds me of the fact that taking him down with my petite body was going to be like a suicide mission.
I wasn’t on the tall side for a woman but Daniel was just average height also so we matched pretty well. Standing behind this impeccably tall attractive man, I was well reminded of where I stood on the height ladder.
“And if you are done checking me out, can you get the h*ll out of my house?” His words or perhaps the snarl that accompanied it snapped me out of my thoughts and I could feel my cheeks redden.
“Are you perhaps mistaken? I own this place for the next couple days.” I say as I shot him a dubious look. How could he own this place and yet, I took another look at him, my investigative instincts kicking up.
He looked like he had money and perhaps some power. There was this commanding air about him but yet I couldn’t believe that he actually owned this huge building. I had spent quite a lot to rent it out for four days and it was on a 50% discount even. A simple maths was all I needed to know the actual price.
“How did you get in here?” I ask him remembering I had left the key on the flower vase. I step out from the doorway. I wanted to lead us back downstairs where my phone and the landline was.
I saw him take a look at the two objects in my hand as a look of irritation flashed in his eyes.
“I already told you. I own this place. You should be the one answering my question on how you got here.” He said and when I was by the foot of the stairs, I finally heard him walking down also and my steps quickened as I turned into the kitchen.
From my vast knowledge of crime, the kitchen was certainly good for either one of us if he was a burglar but the first thing I do is snatch up the phone , allowing it to rest on the shaving stick.
Mr intruder is close as I can hear him louder and I took a deep breath. I needed him out of here before Daniel got here.
I turned to face him. “I don’t know what you really need but I have this huge plan for my boyfriend’s birthday and he will be here soon and I definitely need you out of the way.” The boyfriend's details are of course important. He needed to know I wasn’t someone no one knew her whereabouts.
He chuckled lowly as he looked at me like I was the most stupid thing in the world. “If you don’t stop with this play of ignorance and get yourself out of here, I’ll be calling the police on you for trespassing on private property.” His voice and words were firm and serious and I looked him over again, the thought crossing my thoughts that this man could be right. Did he really own this vacation house? What were the chances?
“You might as well do that as I would like to know exactly why a vacation house I booked for four days suddenly has an owner telling me to get out.” When I see he doesn’t flinch, I continue.
“ Is this a game you guys play and then bring someone else in after me only to chase the person out again?”
This time, I kicked up a reaction in him, however it’s certainly not what I was expecting as his eyes flashed with annoyance.
“Where did you say you rented this house again?” He asked calmly. He was definitely a level headed person I noted down in my mind.
“From a rental site” I say as I try to remember the keyword in the website name.
“Mind if I see it? Did you talk to someone physically or did you do all of this online?”
I look at him weirdly, who had the time to do that physically now. Despite my reluctance, I pull out my phone and search for the website worried that I would have to hand over the phone to him
To be honest though, I was only half wary of him now. After all, I didn’t think any burglar would spend all this time conversing with me.
I found the website quick enough and minimised it so that I could put my chat with the agent in the background. Once that’s done, I handed the phone to him and watched as he looked at it very carefully. He’s a fast reader. Maybe, as his eyes darted speedily across the screen.
He looked at me one for a split second and went back to looking at the screen for a few more seconds.
And the next thing I know, he strides towards me closing the gap between us in one move. Damn those long legs. He’s too close and his pine and earthy smell fills my nostrils and makes me feel very uncomfortable and very aware of his masculinity. I step back and he seems oblivious as he closes the distance again making some of my thrown out of the window fear return with a rush as I can see feel the heat radiating from his body.
He’s too close.
“Did no one ever tell you that using sites with no encrypted security code was a no no? Most especially for a purchase?” He hands the phone back as he points at the top of the browser where I only just noticed for the first time that it stated ‘not secured’ before the web link.
Never had I felt so stupid in my entire life and embarrassment flush through me as my face reddened. I had always prided myself on my intelligence and this was a first for me.
I look up at him and the judgemental look and the shadow of a smile that I see on his face does nothing to help matters at all.
Him taking the time to check the website made me feel like this was really the house owner. Had I been duped of my $600 just like that?
A trace of irritation flashes through my mind as I remember the reason for all these. It was nothing more than an hour ride to get here and yet, Daniel was nowhere to be found.
