Chapter 5

Lorraine's POV… "Light… all that light. Where's it coming from?" I muttered, confused. "Ha, she's coming to." I heard Frances, my head of staff, scream out. "Huh-h?" I wondered as I heard footsteps rush towards me, but I couldn't see their faces. "Too much L-Light," I complained as I tried to open my eyes more clearly. "Pull the curtains." I heard Asia, the Royal healer, say. She's an old witch who's been serving the Royal family for over four centuries now, and I wondered why she was staring down at me. "What's all the commotion about? What's going on?" I asked as I made to sit up, but a sharp pain erupted all through my body, causing me to let out a shrill scream. "My word, Alpha!! You mustn't sit up at all." Asia scolded. "Why hasn't she healed yet? She should have healed by now. It's been three days. People will soon begin to ask questions." I heard Frances ask in a worried tone. "What's been two days? What's going on here? I demand an explanation this instant!" I drawled out in the firmest tone I could muster. "Don't you remember what happened, Alpha? You got stabbed two nights ago, and Stefan brought you back to the palace. Thankfully, no one else, aside from those in this room and Cane, knew about it, as he was thoughtful enough to discreetly pull me aside and tell me what had happened. We've been worried sick about you. Goddess knows what could have happened if he hadn't arrived on time." Frances explained "Cane has been leading the elite warrior team in combing the entire forest since Saturday night. No one knows what happened, but this is a clear sign of dark magic, as not just anyone can have access to a poisoned blade. Those are kept in the Alpha's armory alone." She added worry lines all over her face, but as she spoke, all I could feel was my anger rising to its boiling point. / "What do you mean Stefan brought me here. He was the one who tried to kill me. How gullible can you get, Frances? You, of all people, should know better!" I scolded as the events of the said evening came rushing back to me, and suddenly, someone else let out a low gasp in the room. That was when I saw Asia's great-granddaughter Donna staring at me with her big, brown eyes. "I'm sorry, Alpha." She said, instantly falling to her knees as I let out a low growl "Why is she here?" I asked, glaring at Frances "AhhUh-hmm," she stuttered "My apologies, Alpha. She's my protege and now follows me around so she can learn better. The goddess has blessed her with even greater powers than I have," she said proudly, but I just rolled my eyes and tried to reach my Lycan. I tried hard to reach her, but I couldn't feel her, "Snow. Snow…snowww!!" I desperately called out to her, but there was no response, and I could barely feel her presence. "Are you still mad at me for blocking you out? I'm sorry, okay. Nothing. No response Snow, come on.." I cajoled in the back of my mind, but there was still no response. "What's wrong, Alpha?" Frances asked, rushing to my side. "It's nothing. I just need to be left alone." I lied through my teeth. "As you wish," she said, bowing her head in reverence as she left the room. "Alpha, you need as much rest as possible for the wound to heal faster," Asia said as she stood up with a bowl in her hand and walked over to me. "You'll need to stay on your side. Try not to move," she said as Donna assisted in turning me to lay on my side, and Asia began to apply some grounded herbs over the wound. "Just give it a few minutes to dry on the surface, and then you can relax." She said as she began to wrap me in a bandage from the top of my chest to my lower back. "Why hasn't it healed yet?" I asked. "That's honestly been my greatest concern, your highness. We managed to perform a purification ritual over you and got all of the poison out on time, so you should have healed by now. Although we've rarely had cases of the poisoned blade actually being used, your body may be reacting differently to it. Most people die on the spot the moment the blade connects with their heart or blood, but you still made it even while drowning. It is useless against normal lycans. It is too potent to be wasted on anyone who isn't incredibly powerful, So, physical healing isn't something to worry about. You're the Alpha, after all; your blood heals the fastest." "If you need anything, we'll be in the room next door." She said as they both left. "Snow, come on. I'm really sorry about the mate thing, but you have always known my stance on it. I couldn't trust you to handle the rejection, so I shut you out. Snoww, please.. Talk to me, please." I pleaded with my Lycan But still no response. "Snow? Are you alright? Is something wrong?" I asked all at once as panic began to surge through me. "Why can't I feel her?" I wondered, my hand flying to my chest in a bid to calm myself down. "I'm probably overreacting. It's probably just an after-effect of the herbs or whatever pills they might have given me," I said to myself. "I need to sleep this off. Maybe she'll be back when I wake up," I thought as I tried mind linking Frances to get me some sleeping pills, but I couldn't get through to her. In fact, it suddenly felt like I was having conversations with myself in my head, and I was suddenly beginning to lose my senses. "Frances!! Frances!!" I called out in our link, but all I heard was my own voice. "I must be going crazy or something. This isn't real. No, it's not real!!" I murmured to myself as I shoved away the bedside lamp beside my bed. It hit the floor, shattering into pieces. "Lorr-Alpha!! Are you alright?" Frances asked, rushing into my room at the speed of light. "Get me some sleeping pills," I said in a cold voice, ignoring all her fussing. The next time I opened my eyes, it was almost dusk, about seven p.m. or thereabout. I let out a heavy sigh as I forced myself to sit up. It was painful, but it didn't hurt as much as it did earlier. "Snow…Snowyy," I called out to my Lycan again, but there was no response. In fact, this time, I finally managed to look around and realize how quiet and empty the entire palace felt. I couldn't hear the little chatters of the maids in their links, nor could I hear their brisk footsteps trudging the hallways. I managed to get out of bed and head towards the door, but still, there was no sound. "Frances must have forbidden anyone from coming to my floor. Yes, that's it," I told myself as I walked over to the bathroom. I had a very painful, warm shower, managed to wash my hair with just my right hand, and then slipped into a simple black tee tucked into a pair of cream cargo pants, grabbed a pair of black Timberlands, and headed out of my room. After what felt like forever, I finally made it to the first floor, where the dining was located. "Lorraine!!" Frances scolded, rushing over to my side. As she reached me, her grey eyes glazed over, and every person in and around the dining room instantly rushed away. Leaving only the two of us in the dining room. "You should have called for help. I would have brought your food up for you." Frances chastised. "I'm not sick, Frances, and you should stop babying me. You're not my mother, stop fussing over me." I said indifferently as I made my way to the head of the table and took a seat. "Mhmmm," Cane said from the dining room entrance, clearing his throat as he walked over to me. He was a blonde, hazel-eyed man who looked to be in his late twenties, but he was actually way over eighty. He'd been the leader of the warriors since he was thirty and was also my late father's best friend. He practically trained me to be a killing machine and sometimes played the role of an overprotective older brother or, I dare say, father on rare occasions when he wants to annoy me. "You know you shouldn't be talking to her like that. She literally raised you with as much love as any mother would her own pup," he said, and I rolled my eyes at him. "I've got a headache, so a lecture from you is definitely not on my to-do list. We all have our roles to play, and I can't have her fusing over me like that. I'm doing this to protect her." I say as I quietly begin to make a plate for myself. I had just started eating when two warriors, closely followed by Frances, brought in a catch and laid it on the dining table before me. I could tell it was still warm, and my natural instinct said to rip out its heart and dig into the flesh. But just as I was about to, a sudden wave of nausea hit me. The smell of fresh blood, the rawness of it all, and as though something had possessed me, I found myself dragging my poisoned body off to the refractory to throw up my entire guts. Nothing feels right; nothing feels the same; I feel strange.
