The next day, Bella came to school. It was a normal day, really. It was like nothing had happened since the incident. Which was good. Well Mike was a little excited about it.
After school we all went home, just as we went up to Bella's room, her cell phone was going off. I grabbed it from the desk and looked at it. I answered it for Bella.
"Bella's phone?" I answered.
"Katie!" It was our mother.
So I put it on speaker so both Bella and I could hear and talk to her.
"Mom!" Called out. "Oh god I miss you so much." I told her.
"I miss you too Katie. Where's Bella?"
"I'm right here mom. I was changing clothes."
"Oh yak just get home from school?" Our mother asked us.
"Yes." We both said at the same time and laughed.
We talked for a few moments about school, Forks, Florida and etc. It was like we haven't been away that long and we kinda have. It felt like we been away from her just a week and it's been about almost a month.
"If spring training goes well, we could be living in Florida permanently." Our mother was saying until she got interrupted.
"Please insert 25 cents to continue." The telephone operator said.
"Mom, where's your cell?" Bella asked her.
"Ok, I didn't lose my power cord. It ran away. Screaming. I literally repel technology now." Renee had said.
Bella and I smile, missing our mom. We heard Renee feeds the phone some quarters. Me, shaking my head picturing her doing so. She was never good at cell phones. I use to have to help her with her cell phone. Phil was more better at it than she ever was.
"Now, tell me more about your school, girls. What are the kids like? Are there any cute guys? Are they being nice to you girls?" She asked.
"They've all been really... welcoming." Bella had said.
"That's good. How you been since the wreck?"
"We've been good. There wasn't much damage than we thought." Bella told her.
"And Charlie? Is he treating you girls okay?"
"Mom, we're fine. Charlie, dad's been doing his best when he can." I told her.
"Okay just making sure. If you girls need to come home, come home. Call me and I'll drop everything and get you girls." Mom told us.
"Mom, we're find. We love you."
"Love you girls too." As Renee said that the phone had hung up on us.
She must have ran out of time, we didn't even hear the warning this time.
I looked at the phone and started to tear up a little. Bella rubbed my arm to comfort me, which helped a little.
The next following day, we got to school. We parked right where we usually do, which is where the truck had gotten hit in the first place. When we got out, Bella was looking around like she was reliving what had happened to her. I walked around to her and held her hand.
Mike came over to us. "Look! You're moving. You're ALIVE!" Acting like Dr. Frankenstein.
"Yeah, false alarm..." Bella said with a side smile.
"Actually, I'm glad you're not dead 'cause - well, that would suck, plus I wanted to ask you - even though it's, like, a month away..." Mike was stuttering.
When I heard Mike ask my sister that, I looked away. I saw Edward, head down, is in quiet conference with Jasper and Alice. Abruptly, he looks up, as if he was listening to Bella and Mike, though he's too far away to hear. I looked back at them and saw Bella quickly refocuses back on Mike. Like as she was watching Edward walk over to the bus.
Which I forgot, Bella had a field trip, which I'm gonna be alone once again.
"So what do you think? You want to go? To prom. With me." Mike asked her.
"Prom. As in dance. I, uh - have to go somewhere. To Jacksonville. Yeah." When Bella had said that I was confused. Why did Bella just lie to him about going to Jacksonville. Did she know something that I didn't know. Was we going to see mom?
"You can't go another weekend?" Mike asked.
"Non-refundable ticket. Maybe you should ask Jessica." Bella told him as she looks over towards Jessica.
Mike follows Bella's eyes way across the lawn to Jessica. She smiles at them. Suddenly Edward crosses in front of Jessica. He seems to be smirking at what Bella told Mike. Which made me laugh to myself a little.
Was Bella hoping Edward ask her to prom. I thought it was a girls ask the men to prom. At least that's what I heard.
After that the bell rung and I ran inside to go to my classes. I waved Bella goodbye for now. I was a little jealous about her going and not me. But it's okay.
My classes went by smoothly, it was just like any other day. By the time lunch came, I was starving like Marvin for some reason. I went to the lunch line and grabbed a little bit of everything then went to my table. Everyone that I seat with was gone. I felt so alone and depressed that I was at this table with no one to talk to. Until I heard a tray was sat on the table. I looked up and it was Emmett.
"Hey, why don't you sit with Rose and me?" He had said.
"Huh?" I said at first. "Why would you want someone like me to sit with y'all?" I asked.
"Well it was actually Rose's idea." He said making me look over at Rose.
For once she wasn't giving me the death stare. She was smiling a little. I looked back over to Emmett.
"Really? Thought your girlfriend hated me or something the way she always gives me that death stare."
"Rose, she don't hate you. She actually likes you. And that's saying something. She doesn't like a lot of people. But with you, she sees something." Emmett said.
"Fine, only because I don't wanna sit by myself today." I said then grabbed my tray and walked over with Emmett towards his table.
As I was walking over there, I had a feeling I was being watched by the other students. I once heard that that Cullen’s don’t talk to anyone unless they have too or want too.
When I got to their table, I sat my tray down then sat down the next second. Emmett done the same, sitting next to his girlfriend. I sat across from them.
“Kat, this is my girlfriend; Rosalie.”
“You can call me Rose.” Rose said reaching her hand over to shake mine.
I reached my hand out and shook it. “Nice to finally meet you.” I said as I shook her hand. It was cold a little but then again it is cold outside. “Emmett has told me a lot of nice things about you?” I had said.
“Oh has he now. Hope it was all good.” Rose said with a chuckle.
“Yea, it was good.” I said.
“He’s talked about you some as well. He has asked me about you coming over to the house to tutor you in Spanish, but you turned him down because of me. I don’t mind at all. I’m not one of those jealous girlfriends think you’re gonna take their man. I know and he knows who we belong to.” Rose had said.
“Oh, okay.” I said as I moved a piece of my hair behind my ear. “I’ll still have to think about it. I just don’t want to be one of those students that wants to depend on someone to help them all the time. Just ive me some time to think it over Emmett.”
“Sure, I’ll do that.” He said.
After that conversation, I actually relaxed some. I actually liked her. Rose seemed cool to me. I don’t know what the other girls were thinking about with her.
We all talked about each other. Rose and Emmett were seniors and that they were glad this was their last year. They said once they graduate, they were gonna go away for about a year. They told me that they were engaged to be married that Emmett had proposed to her over the summer.
They were keeping it on the down low, their family knew and was beyond excited for them. Rose talked about wanting to go into fashion. That she wanted to be like her adopted mother. She was into fashion but more into the housing industry part of it. She told me that they own a store in Port Angeles that has cute clothing lines for women of all ages. She said her and her sister, Alice take turns over the summer of running it with their mother; Esme.
I told her that I kinda wanted to get into fashion but I didn’t want to do all that type of work. I wanted to be the one that makes the dress. I told her back home that I use to draw up designs but when I moved here, I left them. So told me she would love to see that. Told me to redo them by memory or do new ones. I mean I could do that.
She told me to come by her place whenever I got some done to show her. So we exchanged numbers, so when I have some, I can call her and ask her if I can come over. She even texted me her address on how to find it and where it is.
“Why don’t you come by after school actually. I can show you some of mine.” Rose had brought up.
“Yeah, sure. But Bella and I share the truck so and she came to school with me today. She’s on that up field trip.” I had said.
“That’s fine, you can ride with me. I brought my car and Emmett can ride with siblings. Right babe?” Rose said smiling.
“Yea sure.” Emmett nodded after taking a bite of his food that he hardly touched.
“Aren’t you not hungry?” I had asked.
“Not really. I don’t like the school food here.” He had said.
“Then why did you get so much?” I asked taking a sip of my drink.
“I share with Rose sometimes.” He said just as Rose grabbed a few of his grapes that he had.
I nodded and smiled. Then the bell had rung. Saved by the bell, I suppose. It was starting to get a little awkward. I don’t know if it was me or them.
By the time art came along, we had a sub that our teacher was sick and is gonna be out for a while, told us to do whatever we’ve been working on or do something else. Whatever we wanted to do.
That gave me a chance to grab some colored paper and pencil and start going to work on some of my clothing line that I had worked on in the past and new stuff. I was very good at what I do and very fast on it too, if I know what I’m doing and how I want it.
By the time the bell had rung, I had at least 4 outfits. They were for each season. Didn’t have the colors for them yet but they will. When it was time for my last class, Emmett was already there in his spot. When he saw me, he patted the table to tell me to come sit with him so I did. The class was it’s usually boring self, so I basically did what I usually do when I’m in here and that’s take what little notes I could to what I was understanding. Which was very little.
By the time class had ended, I went to my locker and got my stuff and went to the truck. Bella was getting off the bus when I walked outside. She looked pissed. But I didn’t asked her why.
When we got to the truck, she backed out of our spot and floored it but ended up breaking too soon. When I looked up, I saw Edward was in his nice Volvo waiting for his siblings to get in then remembered that I was supposed to go home with Rose.
“s**t, Rose.” I said out loud getting Bella’s attention. “Rose, wait up.” I called out to her as she got into her car.
“Where you going?” Bella asked me just as someone had tapped on her window.
“Over to the Cullens’. Rose invited me to come over so we can go over some fashion stuff. Hey Eric.” I said and waved at.
“Hey Kat. Hey Bella,”
“Sorry Eric I’m stuck behind this idiot.”
“It’s fine. Glad too I wanted to ask you something.”
“Like what?” Bella asked.
I wanted to hear this.
“Just wondering if you want to go to prom with him?” Eric asked.
“Oh, no sorry. I have things to do that day. I’m going out of town.”
“Yeah, Mike said that. I thought you were just letting him down easy.” Eric said.
“No sorry.” Bella told him.
“What about you Kat?” He asked.
“Kat, you coming?”
“Yes, just one second.” I told her. “Sorry, I’m not in the right grade for prom. And just like Bella said we’re going out of town that weekend.” I said. Bella looking over at me and smiled. “Well I gotta go. See you later.” I said giving them the peace sign.
I ran over to Rose’s car just as Edward pulled off then Bella. When I got in, I buckled up my seat belt and we were off.
