2 “Marnie?” Ted called. “Can you come down here for a minute? I want you to meet someone.” He didn’t often do that. Ted checked on her a few times a day, or sent others to do it when he was away. But Marnie wasn’t expected to talk to them. Ted must have told everyone not to bother her. She had been at the Aviary—what a wonderful name, what a wonderful place—for coming on two weeks now. She could fly sixteen hours a day if she wanted. All Ted asked was that she sleep a good amount and take regular breaks to eat and drink. He even sent people to the hangar with food. Most of them understood what she liked, just chips and nuts and other snacks, apples or cherries, nothing heavy, but there had been that one gray-haired woman last week who brought Marnie a turkey sandwich.
