13 Alice waited behind the bay of windows inside the Hub. Ted had rustled up a duffel for her somewhere, military canvas and slightly used. She transferred her few belongings out of the garbage bag. Ted took her laptop. “We’ll give you something clean once you get there.” “Get where?” She realized he hadn’t said. “One of our smaller bases. I think it’s better if we don’t say more.” She couldn’t argue. She felt like everyone around her was suspect. Even Camper, when he joined them a few minutes later to report on what he’d seen. “Sorry, sir. No sign of her. Sorry, ma’am,” he added to Alice. She noticed he had returned to ma’am. The advantage to a private jet was the schedule was fairly loose. But Alice understood the urgency. She knew she needed to go. “Did you check the hangar?”
