Chapter Three
I slept in, I wasn't in the mood for anything really. I cried myself to sleep and I cried when I woke up. Today was the weekend so I didn't have any classes.
A knock came from my door and I said nothing, but my mother walked in anyways. "Are you okay hun?" She walked to me and rubbed my back. "I heard Cody wasn't your mate. I'm sorry Astrid I know how you felt about him."
She was so off, but I didn't want to have to explain what was really upsetting me. "I kinda want to be alone."
My mother kissed my forehead. "There's a ball tonight, held by the noble family who lives in the capital. Prince Cody will be there, if it's too soon then you don't have to go."
If he's there Stella might go too. "Thanks I rather not..."
My mother nodded and left, I could tell she wanted to give me my space. I took a shower and then moped around all day. My family had just left for the ball. I was lying on my floor breathing a little fire out of boredom.
"Why Cinderella what are you doing? Shouldn't you be off at the ball?"
I sat up fast and looked at who was climbing into my room from my window. "Princess Stella??"
Stella nodded. "Drop the Princess, just call me Stella. I'm sorry about yesterday, I was collecting myself." She started going through my stuff and putting a few things in her bag. "Don't worry, I'm not stealing, just helping you pack."
I got up onto my feet. "Huh?? Where do you think I'm going??"
Stella smirked. "We're running away." She shrugged.
I huffed. "What makes you you think that?"
She chuckled. "I think you'd follow me literally to the ends of the earth if I asked. It's a mate thing." I sat down on my bed thinking this just couldn't be real. "Well I've heard anyways." She continued. "Don't worry. It's just, we can't hide this for long. You're not gonna reject me are you? You can't huh?"
I looked down at my hands on my knees. "I don't think I can..."
Stella kept packing. "I'm gonna fix it. I know a mage, some ways from here, he can unlink our souls himself, no pain and no more mates."
I stood up and refused to look at her. "What about our parents?"
Stella walked to me. "Easy I left a note over there. They might still search for us, but they won't be able to find us. We're adults now Astrid, come on." She ran to my window and jumped out. She began to plummet then shifted into her dragon form half way down. Even as a dragon she looked perfect. I tried doing the same thing and shifted right before hitting the ground which wasn't smart, because I hadn't done this before. Everything still hurt, seeing Stella now was just odd, and leaving with her like this was just as odd.
We flew for miles and miles, I just followed her, she'd always been so perfect, respectful, basically the gold standard. Everyone talked about how she should rule her kingdom instead of her older twin. I wouldn't be surprised if Cody passes the throne down to her. There had never been anything bad about her in the press, I've had a few bad or embarrassing articles written about me... but Stella was always well perfect.
Stella roared and then landed so I dropped down, landing as well. We both shifted back into our human forms. "Astrid, this trip takes a day. We shouldn't speak much, we don't want to strengthen the mate bond." She looked around. "There's a nearby city, we can stay in a hotel."
"Just talking would strengthen it?" I asked.
Stella started walking. "Yeah, just being around each other would strengthen it."
"You know a lot about this don't you?"
Stella paused suddenly, from the back I could see her lowering her head. "Of course, I knew I had to deal with having another woman as a mate sooner or later so I needed to know what to do and what not to do."
We didn't talk for the rest of the walk to the town, once we got there all eyes were on us, we walked with a distance between us. We didn't want to give off the aura of being mates. We walked into a nearby hotel and checked in. "You can do whatever you want, just be back here by the morning." Stella said with not much emotion as she waiting for the elevator to take her up to our room.
I couldn't stand to be near her like this, it was a cross between me constantly wanting to break down at her feet and me constantly wanting her on top of me. "Okay." I walked away and out the hotel. I didn't know anyone here, this was a small town. I heard people talking about the disappearances in the northern kingdom, I heard them making connections, how it was always hybrids disappearing. Some people think it's them conspiring together to leave and create their own kingdom of hybrids.
Soon I was spotted, I started being noticed, first no one wanted to approach me, they just starred and whispered as I strolled down the streets. Then I noticed a few were following and then a lot of flashes went off, from camera phones and the press. I started walking quicker, I ran into the nearest restaurant and into the restroom. I was panting, my heels didn't help, my feet were pounding.
"You must have been pretty desperate to run into the men's restroom." I looked up to see a male washing his hands.
"O-oh, I'm so sorry I-"
He stopped me, "It's fine princess, don't worry about it, I might be of assistance though." He grabbed a cloak from his bag. "It'll make you invisible to the eye. I bought it off a leprechaun a few years back before they went back into hiding."
I accepted the cloak. "You mean before they became extinct again, well actually extinct this time."
He laughed. "Sure." He was really tall 6'3", blonde short hair, he looked like a hybrid, but I couldn't pin point what kind. We have a lot of types of hybrids, dragon/elf, dragon/mermaid, dragon/werewolf, elf/mage, elf/werewolf, vampire/elf. Well those are all the known ones, being a hybrid wasn't common, they're a minority, but they're known, seen and powerful. "You're wondering my race aren't you?" I felt embarrassed and said nothing, he chuckled. "Stay safe princess." He left.
I put the cloak on and left the restaurant, I went right past the crowd who was waiting for me undetected. I went straight to the hotel.
That wasn't going to be the last time I saw that mysterious man.
