Chapter 4

Three Years Later, Keyara's POV: I rolled over in bed and stretched. I opened my eyes and saw King Tiberius sitting at the desk scraping on a piece of bone, more than likely these symbols that I have no idea what they mean. All he has ever told me is that it's the language of the first of his kind. He told me that he will teach me someday how to read it and how to scratch it into the bone so it can continue to be passed down through the family. That time hasn't come yet but I'm patiently waiting to learn how to understand what he is doing. He says we have more than enough time. The last few seasons with the King have been nothing like I had expected when he first brought me here that night I killed my Master. I learned quickly that King Tiberius is just like the women in the dungeon claimed him to be but all of the cold ones are like that, not just him. He just wasn't ever that way with me. He can be just as cruel and dangerous as they feared but I knew that there was more to him than what they ever saw. He's the ruler over all of the cold ones and makes sure they do as the royal law says. He isn't nearly as heartless as the ones who are cold. He may have fed off of me and still does, and on the off days, fed off of the other women with the occasional death but he was different from all the cold ones. Even after a few seasons of being with him every day, he has never touched me or looked at me like my Master did, with the thoughts of being inside of me. Even after my body finished filling out, my waist curved in and my breasts grew larger, he never looked at me any different than that first day in the bath chambers. I've never been back to the jails below on the floor that is under the ground. I've seen the women when they are brought up for the King to feed and even though I wasn't really down there with them for very long, they obviously remember who I am. The looks they give me tell me that they are disgusted with me. I've heard a few of their whispers. They feel that I've spread my legs for the King in order to keep myself out of the dungeon. Even the one woman who tried to help me that day looks at me differently. I wish things would have been different between her and me because not that long ago, she took her life to end the feedings. "Today is your turn for me to feed." He said as he glanced up in my direction, telling me that he knew that I was awake. I learned quickly that he could hear my heart beating from quite a distance away. It made it difficult at first to hide my emotions and feelings but after a while, I learned how to do better. "Yes, your Majesty," I responded to him politely as I pulled the thick cloth off of my body and slid out of the bed. My nightgown fell towards the floor, covering me all the way to my feet. The gown covered me well and hid the curves that slowly took over my body. The sleeves of the gown covered half of my arms but the hole for my neck was more than large enough for him to move it out of the way for him to bite when it was time for one of his feedings. He stood up from his chair when I approached him. I looked up at him and his eyes flashed quickly to black before returning to their normal color, confusing me because I've only ever seen his eyes change black when he got really angry. "It's starting," He whispered as he placed his hand over my eyes, instructing me to close them as he moved his hand down. "What's starting?" I asked him with confusion. "Shhh, just concentrate." He responded softly. "The demon inside is awakening." He continued to tell me as he pulled his hand away and I stood there with my eyes closed. I could feel the pain starting in my eyes. It was all the way in the back of them. A very sharp pain and it started to get worse. "Your Majesty, it's hurting," I told him as I placed my hands over my eyes as if I thought it was going to help. "It only hurts during the first change. After that, it won't hurt and it will get easier to do the change." He informed me and I nodded. I screamed when it felt like it was ripping my eyes to pieces in my head. His hands went around my body and he pulled me into him, holding my head against his chest. I tried to pull away so I could get my hands to my eyes and dig out the pain but he wouldn't let me move. His strength was incredible and even though I tried with all of my might to pull away, I still felt like I was melted in place to his body. "Shhh, not much longer." He whispered and I felt the vibration in his chest as his words exited his mouth. He was right, just a few moments after I heard his words, the shearing pain started to subside. I could feel my tense body starting to relax and calm down. My hands released the wrapped cloths that were around his body and my fingers stopped digging into his skin through the material. He carefully pulled me away when the pain had stopped but my breathing was still rigid and harsh. "Open your eyes, my dear," He instructed me calmly. I slowly opened them and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was looking at the cloth that was wrapped around his body and chest but it looked different. I could see so much more! I could see the little pieces of fiber as they interlocked with other pieces to form that small piece of cloth. I slowly turned my head and the way everything looked in the room was so much clearer, sharper looking. If I concentrated on the object, my vision seemed to get closer to it as if I was right in front of it even though I wasn't. It allowed me to see the smallest of things from a farther distance away without even moving from my spot! I looked up at him and into his eyes. They were suddenly the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen! They weren't just the grey color that I was used to seeing. I could see the little bits of colors moving through his eyes. Even though his eyes appeared to be grey, I could see more. I could see the bits of red and black swirling in the several shades of grey. I even saw a hint of green swirling through with the other colors. "You have green in your eyes. I never saw that before." I told him and he chuckled. "My mother's eyes were green." He told me and I smiled as I looked at him. "How did you know the change was starting?" I asked him. "Because your eyes were already changing." He responded. "Come," He said as he pulled away from me and walked over to the tall smooth piece of metal that was in the corner of the room. "Look," He instructed as I walked next to him and had a look for myself. The person who was looking back at me through the metal looked like me but I could tell she wasn't me, or at least, not the old me. My eyes were pure black. Completely void of any color from what I could tell. "Are they..." I asked as I looked up at him. "Demon eyes are pure black." He told me and I closed my eyes quickly and put my hand over them before I turned around. "I don't want to look like this!" I snapped as I took a few steps away. I felt him put his hands on my shoulders and rubbed them with his hands. "You're a hybrid, not pure, Keyara. This means you are human too. You should be able to get your eyes to turn back to human eyes just like my eyes turn black like yours because of the demon in me but also dark red for the cold killer in me but also the soft grey eyes of a human." He told me as he reached around and replaced my hand over my eyes with his. "Concentrate. Think about what it looked like to look through your human eyes before this happened." He told me and I nodded as I concentrated with all that I am. "It hurts!" I told him as I shook my head to try to rid myself of the pain. "The first change always hurts. Don't give up." He told me and I nodded my head as I tried again. I felt the water of pain fill my eyes as the pain shot through them, causing me to scream in pain. It felt like it was never going to end but suddenly, the pain started to fade. I reached up and pulled his hand away from my eyes. I slowly opened them, blinking several times to clear my vision. What I saw, seemed to be what I remembered seeing. The way things looked before the moon came up the last time. I couldn't bring the visions closer to my eyes like I could before and I couldn't see the tiniest of things. I turned and looked back up at him and he gave me a smile. "Did it work?" I asked and he nodded. "They aren't the same color as before but they look more like a human's eye." He told me. "What do you mean, not the same color? What were they before? What are they now?" I asked him. "Before, your eyes were brown but now they are a beautiful dark copper color." He told me and I couldn't help but smile in happiness. I gasped in fear and my eyes widened when the sudden thought of other things that might happen to me now that this demon is taking over my human body. "My blood! Your feedings!" I gasped as I looked up at him. "You had demon blood before." He told me and I slowly nodded in acceptance as I calmed down, and tilted my head to the side to offer him my neck for his early morning feeding that we still needed to do. He put his hand behind my head and pulled me into him as he leaned down and placed his lips over the skin of my neck. As he has always done, he breathes in my scent, fanning his warm breath over my skin. The way he bites me has always been so gentle or as gentle as he can make it. I can't hide the fact that it really hurts and the pain that I feel in my chest is the worst part of it but somehow, the way he breathes into my neck, the feel of his soft lips as he gets the area ready with kisses, it seems to help my mind travel to a different place. I hissed in pain when I felt his sharp pointy teeth go into my neck. My hands clenched down on his arms as he held me in place. I felt the horrific pain shooting into my chest, making my heart beat so hard. I felt my legs start to weaken, causing my body to fall into his body with his arms wrapped around me to keep me from falling. I felt his tongue run over the side of my neck once he had pulled away. He reached under my legs and picked me up gently. I put my arm around his neck as he carried my almost lifeless body back over to the bed. --- I open my eyes, noticing right away that my vision was the vision of the demon again. I closed them and concentrated on changing them back. This time it went a lot quicker and there wasn't any pain. Once they were back to the normal that I was comfortable with, I got out of bed. I grabbed the gown that I wear each day and slipped the one I wear to bed off of my body. I slip my everyday gown on so I can get started with my chores. "Good, you're awake. That was faster than usual," I heard King Tiberius say as he walked into the room. "Does that mean something?" I asked and he nodded. "You have the healing of a demon. It's the reason why you will never age again and will always look the way that you do now. The main reason why you will never die unless someone kills you. I imagine other things will start to appear in time." He told me as he walked over to me with a few things in his hands. "What is that?" I asked him as I looked at what he was carrying. "You're going to be able to leave my side soon and because of that, I'm making it so everyone knows that you belong to me and any other king after me." He told me as he set the long intricately designed stone box on the wooden table. I just stood there as he opened it to reveal long brass-looking sticks with points at the end. I wasn't sure what he was going to do with it but I am not considered a high enough status to question what my King is doing. He opened a round stone to reveal a black substance that reminded me a lot like ash but much darker. "This is going to hurt," He told me and I nodded as I looked away from what he was doing. I felt his fingers on my shoulders as he pushed both of the sleeves off, sending my gown to the floor at my feet. My King has seen me without any gowns or wraps many times so standing in front of him without any covering my naked body felt no different than if I was standing with all my cloths over my body. I bit my lip and closed my eyes when I felt the sharp pain on the back of my right shoulder. It was very painful and I did what I could to keep myself from letting the water run from my eyes and letting out a scream. This felt like it went on forever and the pain never got better, instead, it got worse the longer he did it. My skin was so sore, making each stab of the sticks even more painful than the one before. "Done," He said as he put everything back in the stone box. I tried to move my shoulder and look behind me to see what it looked like but I couldn't see it. I could kind of see the black on my skin but couldn't make out what it looked like. "What is it?" I asked as I kept trying to look at it. "A symbol that will tell all that you are to never be touched. You are the King's most valuable possession and your seal of purity will never be broken. It's an image of the demon that lives inside of me. Only the royal line has this demon and it's the demon that is passed down from one royal to the next. The pure one is the only pure demon of our kind and this is the part of him he passed down to us." He explained to me and I turned and looked up at him. "So, this is what the pure one looks like?" I asked him and he shook his head. "No, he's much worse." He told me and I felt a tremble in my body at the thought of the pure one being worse than the demon in my King. A demon I hope to never see for myself.
