Chapter 2: Heated Conversation

1927 Words
Third Person's Point of View Flashback... The whole room was drenched with colorful lights. Light music filled the background as the Alphas and the other high-rank officials chatted off. It was the second day of the Annual Alpha Meet and Miles couldn't be happier knowing that his nightmare was coming to an end but he had no idea about the things that were going to happen to him. Everyone was socializing in the social even except one she-wolf who sat in the far corner of the room by the liquor counter - Erika. She sat there alone and oblivious to her surrounding as she drowned in her thoughts, replaying the heated conversation with her mother which she had earlier in the evening. She loved her mother but there were certain things about that woman which ticked her off a lot of times. Secrets- that woman had way too many secrets and Erika wondered why. Even though June was her own mother but Erika knew little about that woman. She didn't know about her childhood, she didn't know about her background and she didn't know how June managed to know more fighting tactics than all the warriors in the pack combined. Occasionally she helped with the training of the warriors as she was one before-that's what she has been told by her father. That was the only thing that Erika knew about her mother's past. It was not like that she didn't make any attempt to know about her past. She constantly tried to know about her while having the mother-daughter time and most of the time it didn't turn out to be pleasant. That evening, the same thing happened. Mate. They were talking about mates and when Erika voiced her curiosity to know how she and her father met. Things went downhill from there. One moment they were having a great mother-daughter time and the next, both were shouting at each other. "You don't have to know everything, Erika!" June bellowed. "But why?" "Why can't I know something as mundane as how you met dad?" Erika threw back her words to June. It wasn't the first heated conversation they were having. They had many similar sessions many times before and God knew how many more they were to have in the future. June was hell-bent on not telling anything about her past to her daughter. She did a good lot of work to keep her secrets hidden because she didn't want her little one to get affected by them in a bad way. "Some things are best left unknown, Erika!" This time June's tone was softer, begging her daughter to let go of the topic because it hurt her every time. Her wounds were still there. She tried a lot to mend them but some wounds are made to be never mended. They stay there forever like a scar, hurting the person they have latched themselves upon. June knew that Erika was stubborn but she was oblivious to the fact that her daughter overrode her in the same department. For Erika, it was a challenge. "But it's not possible to keep it unknown for long. Not when someone is already searching for it." With this Erika left the house. Dammit. She clutched the glass of wine in her hand hard as those words continued to float inside her head, crashing up with her emotions which threatened to explode then and there. She looked around the room and internally groaned in frustration. She wanted to pull her hair out of her head and scream till her lungs bursts. There was this certain emotion which she has been feeling lately and can't put a finger on it. Ugh! She was frustrated with everything! Being a female Beta, she has to hear a lot of words on an everyday basis. Why? Because for doing the job of Beta she was supposed to have a p***s, not a v****a! No matter what happened, everything was blamed on her gender. If she did something right then it was because she was a female and if she did something wrong then it was because she was a female. If something went wrong then it was because she was a female and if something went right then it was because she was female. Heck! Even the earth was round because she was a female! She grinded her teeth as she looked at the Alphas around her, all oozing with power and dominance. It was a male-dominated society and being a female Beta that she was, many people saw that as a bad thing. Many had the mentality that a female should not work amongst males and even though the society talked about woman empowerment they didn't like a woman to see at a higher rank. It has been set to their mind by default that woman can never be someone of high status and an equal to a man. She was 21 which meant that it has been three years since she took over the Beta position. Yes, everyone in her pack was proud of her but she had to do a lot to keep them feeling the same. While the 21 years old she-wolves in her pack were partying around or having a mate and enjoying their lives, she kept herself locked in the office and worked day and night for the wellbeing of her pack. She was good with computers and it always had been her dream to pursue a Master's degree in Computer Science but she never had the opportunity. She never had the time for herself. So much so for being a female Beta. She sighed as she took a sip from the glass of wine in her hand, hoping that it could somehow put her turmoil to an end. On the other side of the room, the Silver-headed Alpha sat with a bored expression decorating his face. He was not interested in talking to anyone; he was there just because he has to be there. But there was this certain thing that occupied most of his conscious mind. That scent. He got this particular scent in Alpha Miles' office that made his wolf- Karl stir oddly. He urged Andrew to follow the scent which he did but he never found the bearer of the scent. But he knew who the scent belonged to. It belonged to his mate and right then, sitting there in the room he was thinking about her. Even though he was physically present there but his mind was searching through the pack house for her. He had decided to talk to Alpha Miles about the matter because he'd be able to help him more because it was his pack. Suddenly, the slow beat musing changed into something pop and the crowd stirred in excitement, mostly gathering around the dance floor. The theme of the party consisted of masks which decorated some of the people's faces but Andrew's lain beside him untouched. All of an instant that particular scent hit Andrew which made his head snap into its direction. His eyes searched the dimly lit room and landed on a she-wolf sitting by the liquor counter. She wore a black dress but her hair seemed darker in comparison which fell down over her shoulders and reached her waist. She sat there, oblivious to his presence, sipping from her wine glass. 'Mate!' Karl howled which made Andrew get up and make his way to that she-wolf. A smile found its way to his lips. Finally! His heart rate increased dramatically and his mouth went dry. His palms were sweating but he continued to eat the distance between him and his other half. He wanted to hold her in his arms and mark her instantly. When he crossed the dance floor, the music hit the verse. *hey! I was doing just fine before I met you, I drink too much and that's an issue but I am okay.* Suddenly, her head snapped in his direction. She sensed him too and now her eyes were on him. *hey! You tell your friends it was nice to meet them but I hope I never see them again.* Blue. Her eyes were the magnificent shade of blue that he had ever seen. But unfortunately, her face was covered with a mask which made Andrew frown. He wanted to see her! *I know it breaks your heat. Moved to the city in a broke down car* Surprise decorated her eyes with a certain emotion that Andrew can't decipher. He kept tracing his way to her. The closer he got, the more excited he got. *And four years no calls. Now you're looking pretty in a hotel bar and I can't stop.* When he reached nearer to the she-wolf, suddenly, she stood up from the stool, her eyes never leaving his. She was mesmerized by him. She had never seen someone like him. His hair and eyes, both silver. He was tall, way tall for her. She would hardly reach his shoulder. *No, I can't stop.* She took a step towards him but stopped halfway. No! She can't do this. All her previous thoughts came floating back to her. She can't have him, not now. If she goes with him then who will take the Beta position? She didn't want to leave her beta position yet so she spun on her heels and disappeared into the darkness of the room. *So baby pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover* Why did she run away? It confused Andrew for a moment. Why did she do that? Her actions angered his wolf and he continued to go the same way she disappeared, following her scent. Her scent led him outside the building after which it disappeared. Where did she go? Andrew searched around for her for the rest of the evening but he was unsuccessful. That night neither the wolf nor the man was at peace. He didn't know anything about her. He didn't know her name, he didn't know who she was and why the hell did she run away! He approached Miles the first thing in the morning and informed him about the situation. Miles called all the unmated she-wolves in the pack for Andrew to find his blue-eyed one but she was missing amongst them too. When Erika came to know that all the unmated she-wolves of the pack have been called, she left the territory saying that she has to make some transactions and Miles let her pass without a second thought. It hurt her wolf Hestia, who was totally unhappy with Erika's decision. She wanted to go back to the Silver Alpha but she knew that wasn't happening anytime soon. Their story wasn't going to be a simple one... End Of Flashback ~ It started to snow already when Andrew and the other male wolves of the pack came back from the hunting. It was one of the rituals of the Calantha Ceremony that the male has to hunt for his female. The size of the hunt determines the strength of the male. Even though Andrew was mateless, he had to participate in the even because of his Alpha position. He growled lowly when he saw the she-wolves embrace their mates as they presented them with their hunt of the day. At the moment he couldn't help but think about that particular blue-eyed she-wolf who ran away from him. Being an Alpha he hunted a bear but his she-wolf was not there to celebrate the hunt with him.
