Ambrose is a ruthless and bloodthirsty vampire, well, that's until he meets Adelaide, a woman who captures his soul and causes his dead heart to flutter for a second. They quickly become best friends and even though his heart grows to love her, Adelaide doesn't return his affection.

After losing her during childbirth, events lead Ambrose to take her son and flee to America so that the child can have a better life. He promised Adelaide that he will find a loving home for him.

One hundred and twenty-one years later, Ambrose meets Nicolette, the spitting image of his lost love Adelaide. Stunned, he lurks in the dark and watches her every night for a year, until his desire for her grows to an intense high. He decides he needs to meet her and learn why his heart hasn't stopped beating since he laid eyes on her.

Into her dream, he dives, and there he realises something that he never thought possible.

PROLOGUE: ADELAIDE
FEBRUARY 14TH, 1900 The night was dark and rich with dread. Just like I preferred it. It rode in on a horse of pure midnight velvet, beckoned by the stars under the glow of a full moon. As the colours of the day rested, I hovered at their windows and I watched them in their peaceful slumbers, perhaps they dream of what the morrow might bring. I cracked an ominous smile as I observe the hillside become its monochrome beauty, shapes that created an ever-changing and ever-present puzzle. I lived for the darkness; I was one with the night, from rock to plant to predator. One promise of life awaited me before the return of the sun. Tonight will be someone's last night on this God-forsaken Earth. I hummed to myself. But who is the unlucky bastard? Which maiden will be tricked into offering me their virtue? Whose neck shall I feast upon tonight? My supernatural eyes dilated as they dined upon the porcelain skin beauty at the top of the Medforth castle. She sat at her bureau applying her skin ointment. Her delicate fingers intricately massaged the peachy substance into her pores. My smell heightened, and I felt my eyeballs getting absorbed in a sea of red. I was thirsty, thirsty for this virgin. A low growl burst from my chest and my erected manhood struggled against the interior of my covering. Her arousal was evident. I watched as her fingers got lost between her thighs and I knew instantly that this was something she did on the regular. This sweet little virgin loved to pleasure herself. I titled my head because of the tingling, burning sensation in my gums telling me that my fangs needed to be set free. My eyes connected with the beauty of the moon because In the nights I was the dark flora of nature, undead and unseeing, existing only as myself. With eyes wide open and alert, I was at home and the blackness around was my cocoon, a place in which my pursuits may flow freely. So, as the moon and stars shone above the fleeting clouds of ink, as the air released the heat of the day, my brain conjured a new way to hunt, for my inner soul loved a challenge. I was going to persuade her to invite me in instead of her coming outside to me. My hair stood on my neck and I lowered my head so that my flaming eyes could connect with her crystal blue ones. She was frightened as she scrutinized me. She knew I was trouble and that I was dangerous, but with my powers of hypnosis and seduction, I held her at my will. I placed a single finger on my lips and whispered, “shh!" Her hands cupped her breasts as she juiced for me. I could detect her virgin heat burning for me to tear her hymen to shreds. I licked my lips as I imagined sinking my teeth into the interior of her milky thighs. Her palms slid down the hem of her white nightdress that would soon be soaked with her blood, and she slipped a finger into her wet core. My ears perked as they picked up the tiny squishing sounds her finger was making against her virgin flesh. “Invită-mă să intru, iepurașule." (Invite me in, little bunny.) I demanded. Like a puppet on a string, she glided over to the double windows and I grinned when I heard her opening the locks. I didn't wait long for her to say the words. “Te rog, intra." (Please come in.) Her tone was soft and beautiful. I didn't wait another moment. I swooped in like a gust of wind, stirring her blond ringlets in a swirl. My hands grabbed hold of her waist and I could tell that she was in her 20s, maybe 21 or 22. I was happy about that because I never feast on anyone below the age of 19. “Vă rog să faceți dragoste cu mine." (Please make love to me.) Her voice was pleading, and I knew it was my predatorial pheromones giving off the highest of highs, making her think she was in love with me, that I was the one. I pitied the fragile young thing. She knew not what awaited her. “Răbdare, iepuraș mic. Amândoi vom fi beți de poftă peste o vreme." (Patience, little bunny. We both will be drunk on lust in a while.) I leaned my mouth against her neck, running my tongue over her internal jugular vein. I could hear the blood rushing through her veins all the way towards her heart. I spun her around and caressed her from behind. Her breasts were full and her n*****s were ripe. If I had her in my chambers, I would feast on her for a few hours while I f**k her into the dawn. But I had to be quick because in the three minutes while I was here I picked up on a few things making my hunt more exciting. A tiara with elaborate designs of the royal crests aligned with rare diamonds and pearls sat idly on the bed. Plus I heard patrols pacing around the outside of the door. Now I was sure that the unlucky maiden cradled in my arms was none other than Princess Ann-Marie Medforth. I extended my claws, and I spun her around so that she could look into my eyes, then I took away her trance and made her see what I really am... A demon of the night... A vampire. This was my favourite part of quenching my thirst, the fear in their eyes and the smell of their torturing souls. I ushered her to stay quiet. No matter how much she wanted to scream, she couldn't make a sound. My fangs grew out of their places and I titled her in my arms. With dominant power, I sank my teeth into her neck, making sure I tore her jugular. Her body shook in pain, her legs trembled beneath my grasp. The warm blood flowed so sweetly down my throat, wetting and warming the darkness of my soul. I sensed my venom spreading through her veins, I knew she wanted to run, to scream, to beg for help, but I commanded her to do no such thing. Then my pheromones came out in waves, drowning her in lust. Even though the poor thing was dying, she desired for me to enter her, but I couldn't. She believed in a heaven and I wouldn't take away her chances of entry if I stole her virginity. So, I sucked her dry. My erection almost tore into her abdomen. Most vampires would f**k her into oblivion, but I am not most vampires. I didn't ask to be a monster, I just had to do what my nature intended, and that was to quench my bloodlust. Her heart slowed and then her body went limp. I cradled her in my arms and rested her on the bed. That's when the doors burst open. “Ann-Marie dragă. Tatăl tău îți pare rău-” (Ann-Marie dear. Your father is sorry — ). The woman stopped in her tracks. Her body went into shock at what she was witnessing. “Paznici!” (Guards!) The frantic wailing of the Queen echoed throughout the chambers. I spun around and came face to face with the ageing beauty. Her lips quivered and her eyes became saucers when she caught sight of my red eyes. I grinned and licked her daughter's dripping blood from my face. I knew the whole of Romania had heard tales of Dracula, I knew she knew what I am. One guard was quick at her side, pointing his arrow at me. I didn't move. He fired, shooting the dart through my shoulders, and my blood splattered all over the Princess's face. Before more guards entered, I vanished through the window in which I came. As soon as my feet touched the ground, my wound was fully healed. I was safe for now. The guards wouldn't dare to come after me without the solace of the sunlight. The true darkness of the night was my comfort, the blanket of generous velvet that kept me safe. It was the sweet black that made the moon so beautiful, that produced a stage for her to stand upon. It was the pure blackness of the night that gave the stars their beauty. Now my hunger was at bay for a night or two. The country would mourn the death of the princess and warnings of vampires would be in every town folk's mouth. Now that my thirst was at bay, my rational thoughts invaded my mind. Fuck! What was I thinking killing someone of the royal bloodline? This could cause a war upon the vampires. My shoulder bumped into a soft place, sending the person falling a few meters away. s**t, I needed no more trouble, so I continued my journey towards the sketchy part of town. I didn't even give the insignificant human a second glance. “Idiotule!" (Asshole!) I heard a sweet voice say. I stopped in my tracks. Maybe I could have a little dessert. This woman didn't know how much she poked the bear. I spun around to see her brushing the dirt off her old tattered brown coat that had so many patches of different cloth that I felt embarrassed for her. I walked up to her without making a sound. She probably thought I was long gone, but when she lifted her head and saw me snarling at her, she stepped back startled, and then she fell to her feet. “Îmi pare rău, domnule, nu am vrut să vă insult." (I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to insult you.) Her voice trembled as she spoke, but I wasn't too focused on her words, I was on her face and her unique scent. It was as if my heart palpitate for the first time when I saw her. Before her, I'd only ever really loved two things, and they were blood and s*x. But she was a holy blend of them both as if the universe made someone that if I ever met them, I'd know for sure they were unique in all the world. So, I was so happy to have met her, and for the first time in my 879 years, I was scared; afraid of such joy and such pain. I've wanted no form of eternity until now, I never saw the point, but her captivating essence captured me in every way imaginable. I wished her to stay and fall in love with me. I just hoped she was brave enough to take my hand. “Ridice în picioare." (Stand up.) I commanded, and she obliged. My views had never seen someone or something more beautiful. She possessed flawless black skin and eyes that shone brightly — making me want to know the person within. She watched my eyes move as it drank in her features and there was this urban warrior in her combined with a gentleness that made my stone heart reach out. She was probably curious about what a man of my status was doing in this part of town. She bit her bottom lip, and I realised she was afraid of what punishments she might get for calling a white man, an asshole. Then in that instant I turned and caught her eyes; before she could turn away with fear, a genuine grin spread across my face, turning it from handsome to divine. At that moment, her body relaxed and the warmth that she radiated set fire to my soul. I wanted to know this person, but why? She waited and when I didn't say a word, she took it upon herself to break the tension. “Din nou, domnule, îmi cer scuze pentru comportamentul meu rău și accept cele douăzeci de lovituri sau orice pedeapsă pe care o considerați potrivită." (Again, sir, I apologise for my bad behaviour and I accept the twenty lashings or any punishment you see fit.) This time I made an angry growl. She flinched, and I caught her before she could run away. My eyes were burning crimson. “Nu te-aș putea răni niciodată." (I could never hurt you.) I spoke through gritted teeth. Her brown eyes shone in disbelief. “c*m te numești?” (What is your name?" She contemplated for a moment, and then her body relaxed. “Adelaide, so you're a vampire." Her answer surprised me. “Yes, and you speak English." I didn't know why I felt so free with her. “Obviously. So, are you going to drink my blood now? If not, I need to be on my way." A feisty thing. “So you are not frightened of me then?" I asked playfully. “I'm more afraid of not getting into the Kingdom of heaven," she opened her coat and revealed a very pregnant belly. “Let's just say the father is my married boss." She didn't seem like the person to have s*x with someone else's husband. She picked up on my confusion. “He forced himself on me and no one believed me, so now I hide on this side of town hoping they'll forget about me." “What's his name? I will slaughter him and his family," I grunted. “No need to do that vampire. I can take care of myself." “I see that," I laughed and the sound of my laughter was so alien, I hadn't heard it for almost four centuries. Why was I behaving so human with her? “Ok, I'll be on my way now," she sauntered away, and I let her go, but I followed her, keeping to the shadows ensuring that I wasn't detected. She stopped at an even more desolate part of town. I could smell the rodents and pests roaming around. I watched as she settled on an old cloth and cuddled up against a decrepit wooden bench. “So this is where you live?" I expected her to be startled, but again she surprised me when she answered. “Not for long. I knew you'd follow me." She retorted with her eyes closed. “Come live with me, I have enough room," I blurted out, something I never do. From the moment I met this girl, I've spoken more than I had in over 800 years. “No thanks. I've been fine on my own for seven months now." “You've been living like this for seven months?" She didn't answer. “Well, then I will stay with you." “Suit yourself," she mumbled as I settled on the bench beside her. I didn't know why, but I felt the need to protect her. I spent the next two and a half months spending the nights with Adelaide, and even though I loved her severely, she never returned my love. My heart turned to stone once more when she died giving birth to her son, she made me vow to find him a great family, but with the hunt for Princess Ann-Marie's killer plus the vampire council wanted my head after they found out I killed the princess, so I had to leave Romania. I took Adelaide's son and moved us to America where I left him at a church's door wrapped in a yellow blanket that my mother gave me. I watched him grow and have a family of his own, and then I did the same with his son and then his grandson. It was the year 1999, a hundred years had gone by since I killed princess Ann-Marie, so the vampire council sent word to me that I was needed in Romania. Upon my arrival, I was elected as the leader of the vampire council and after spending 21 years being a King, I realised I wasn't happy, so I went back to America in the year 2020 and sank into my loneliness. The community in which I live was hosting a masquerade ball on Valentine's Day and they wanted to use my castle as the venue. For some insignificant reason, I agreed. Valentine's Day is my birthday after all. The committee invited me to attend and out of courtesy I accepted their invite. That night I kept to myself, careful not to attract the guests, but who was I kidding, I was the centre of attention. I could smell their desires and I also could read a few of their thoughts. I was bored, so I decided to return to my chambers and that's when I saw her. And even though her face was covered behind her masquerade mask, I knew it was her, my Adelaide.
