Blood Separation

“Thank you, doctor,” Kazmiyah said after the large man finished prepping her and set her up for the blood transfusion. She lied back on the hospital bed.     “Anything for a Goddess of the moon.” He smiled.     Kazmiyah replied with a small smile before he left. She then sighed and started to sit back onto the bed to just allow the blood to flow from her system and into the bag.     “A little early to be donating blood, don’t you think?”     When Kazmiyah saw Rojer standing there by the doorframe, her face lit up. “Hi, Roj.” She couldn’t get over how happy she was to see his face.     He came into the room and gestured towards the little tube that was pulling blood from her arm. “Potent stuff.” He commented as she acknowledged the effect that the scent of her blood had on him. “Forgot that goddess blood was gourmet.” He teased.     Kazmiyah shook her head and chuckled. “It’s easy to forget, I guess.” She said.     Rojer replied with half a smile before it became smaller. “It's four in the a.m, Kaz.” He pointed out, sitting next to her on the bed. “What are you doing here?” He asked.     She sighed, shrugging away from the question. “Figured, I’d start early on the ten units of blood that the docs need.” She said. “Less to do when Aurora gets here. That way she can just get started as soon as she gets here.”     Rojer raised his brow. “How much do you trust this girl, Kaz?” He asked as it dawned on him that he was placing his Alpha’s life in the hands of the granddaughter of the vampire that placed him in the coma in the first place.     Kazmiyah knew that this conversation was going to resurface sooner or later. “I was hoping that this conversation would come up a little later.”     “Kaz, that’s my Alpha in that room. And I don’t know her. It doesn’t really seem like anyone does if I am being perfectly honest.”     “Well, I know her well enough and I trust her-”     "Enough to bet Falcon’s life on it?” He asked. “I don’t know if I can trust that, Kaz,” Rojer confessed.     “And I’m not asking you to,” Kazmiyah replied, looking at Roj. “I’m asking you to trust me.” She attempted at reason.      Roj raised his brow. “No offense kid, but, you and Falcon aren’t necessarily on what I would call the best of terms.” He admitted.     “I gave my life for him, Rojer.” Kazmiyah incredulously retorted. "Surely, I don't need much more proof than that of my sincerity in wanting to help him!"     He sighed. "I guess you do have a point there. You did give your life for him." Rojer admitted. “And came back a little different.” He said. “Emphasis on different, kid.” He shrugged. “I don’t know what’s going on in that head of yours.” He said.     Kazmiyah sighed and dropped her head onto Roj’s shoulder. “I don’t either, Roj.” She said. “Things are different, and I can’t change that. I want everything to go back to the way it was but my mind and...and my heart-my soul isn’t wired that way anymore.” She sighed. “I just want all of this confusion to go away so that I can focus on finding a way to get my mother back.” She confessed.     “I understand,” Roj replied after a long lull in the conversation. “But,” he reluctantly started back up. “If your mind is wired differently now, then why should I believe that you still think that Falcon is worth saving this time around?” He asked.     Kazmiyah looked at him. “He’s my true mate, Rojer.” She said, retracting from her friend. She was offended by his accusation. “No, we’re not on good terms, but I don’t hate him.” Kazmiyah further defended herself. “And even if I did, my thoughts aren’t so selfish that I cannot see that he is needed by the Navarre as well as the Lycan race as a whole.” Kazmiyah was obviously disappointed in Roj's lack of faith in her. “I am connected to him.” She said. “I know that he has been suffering, Roj.” She confessed. “I don’t know the specifics but I could feel a pain there-distant...and dull.” She shook her head. “The whole time, I could feel it. At first, I thought that it belonged to me...until I realized that it didn’t. It was his pain and….while I don’t know what was causing it, I knew that I didn’t want him going through it. Not alone-and I hated Alora for not being there with him through it.” She hated herself as well for even caring as much.     Roj looked at Kazmiyah. He took a deep harsh breath. “Kaz, what Falcon was going through...Alora only made it worse.” He said. “And it wasn’t even intentional.” He shrugged. “He was in pain because of you.” Kazmiyah switched her gaze to Rojer in befuddlement. “He suffered every single day with you gone.” He told her, his mind recollecting how different Falcon became after that fight at Blue Ridge. “Christoph took his Lycan away from him and turned him into something darker than his true nature. It was hard enough to come back from that. Then you sacrificed yourself for him. And he knew...he knew that he didn’t deserve it! He knew he didn’t deserve you.” Rojer stood from the bed. “Sometimes, I’d catch him sneaking out at night, shifting into Nox and leaving-not returning for hours out of a day-not contacting anyone-not even me. Then those hours turned gradually began to turn into days.” He said. “One day I asked why-why did he keep leaving? Why did he keep deserting his Luna?” Rojer turned around to face Kazmiyah. “He said, he just wanted to be free-that he needed to get away and he’d realize that no matter how hard he tried in being there for Alora. He couldn’t shake knowing that she wasn’t meant for him..that he couldn’t have you.” He said. “You giving your life for him almost turned him feral, Kazmiyah.” He said.      By this point in the conversation, tears were fighting to leave Kazmiyah’s eyes. “I-I didn’t mean for anyone to be…” her words trailed off. “I just thought that his life was more important than mine-”     “Why would you think that?!” Roj asked. He seemed to be unable to believe his ears. “That boy loves you, Kaz. He needs you and he is stubborn-he is so hell-bent on keeping his obligations to Warren Crescent, that he can’t even admit his feelings out loud!” He said. “You-" He paused to calm down before speaking again. "I know that you are a goddess-I know you have certain dominions over us, but it is not your right to say that your life is not important to those around you! Everyone cares about you, Kaz-loves, and needs you! So that doesn’t give you the right-”     “It wasn’t just about him, Roj, okay!” She snapped. “It wasn’t just because I thought that the Lycan race could not afford to lose their Alpha.”     “Then why did you do it?!” Roj pushed.     “I’m not! I am not doing this with you.” Kazmiyah weakly countered. “I’m not.” She shakily inhaled. “I don’t want to talk about it.” She said.     Roj knew at this point, that Kazmiyah was resigned to the subject at hand. He knew that he couldn’t push her any further on it. “Fine.” He finally gave in and walked back over to her. “Did you tell Aurora?” He asked. “Did you tell Aurora Valentine the real reason why you did what you did?” He asked.     “No.” Kazmiyah simply answered. “I didn’t.”      “So, so then you do not trust her, is what you’re saying,” Roj said.     “Really?” Kazmiyah scoffed. “All that to circle back around to Aurora Valentine?” She asked.      Roj shrugged. “I figured I’d return to a subject that you seemed more inclined to answer.”     “I didn’t tell Aurora Valentine, because I didn’t have to.” Kazmiyah finally remarked. “She got the gist.”      “So, you two have that much in common, huh?”     Kazmiyah was tired of Roj’s distrust for someone that he was depending on to save Falcon's life. “I have more in common with Aurora Valentine than I have ever had with anyone else. I dare say she understands me more than I even care to admit.” Kazmiyah confessed. “She has been through hell, Roj.” She told Rojer. “Running for her life for far longer than I’ve even been alive-learning how to survive and advance her abilities on her wits-being alone and losing the only person in the world that she feels understands her.” She defended Aurora further. “She has her own problems, believe me-”     “Yeah, like her grandmother?” Roj asked. “How am I supposed to shake that, kid?" He asked. “How am I supposed to act like that doesn’t bother me?” He reasoned. “There is too much that we just don’t know about her-”     “Her grandmother was a former Elder of the Blood Haven as well as a former council member and Varick’s former mentor,” Kazmiyah informed Rojer. “Her grandfather was an Arctic Alpha.”     “Where does the sorcery come in?” Roj asked.     “Does it matter?” Kazmiyah retorted.      “Yes, it does,” Roj returned without hesitation. “They are responsible for a lot of the turmoil that you as well as Crescent Falls and my Alpha as gone through-”     “So.” Kazmiyah countered. “If you’re going to judge her for her lineage then judge me too.” Kazmiyah aggressively countered. “We don’t have control over our blood relations, Roj. That girl was murdered by her own grandmother just because saw Aurora as a means to gain more power.” Kazmiyah said. “And now she has attacked again. Can you imagine how shaken Aurora must have been to hear that? To hear how close her killer is to home?” She asked. “Aurora Valentine has a lot on her plate and still she offers to help fix this problem for us! Just as Godfrey said earlier, she really doesn’t owe us a thing. Keep that in mind before you judge her.”     Rojer took in what Kazmiyah said and how adamant she was in her words. He couldn't help the small smirk that fell upon his lips. He realized at that moment, that Kazmiyah hadn't changed as much as he thought she had. Always seeing the best in others.     "Alright, kid." Rojer finally decided. "If you trust her...I'll trust you."                                                 ***************************************     Ten o’clock in the morning. Mags and Aurora stood there in the room, awaiting the other witches' presence. It seemed that no one had shown up yet, though she assumed that the Beta wasn’t too far away from the area. So, she just waited for the calvary.     “Aunt Aurora.”     Aurora looked at her niece with amusement in her eyes when she called her. Aurora didn’t know if she would ever get used to being called so formally.      “You’re afraid,” Aurora suggested before returning her attention to the Alpha’s unconscious form lying there on the hospital bed, already prepped for the transfusion.     “Why-why would you think that?” Mags asked.     You only refer to me as aunt when your emotions are heightened-mainly anxious or afraid.” Aurora pointed out. She glanced at Mags. “Why are you afraid, Maggi?” She asked.     Mags took a deep breath. “I-I don’t want to mess anything up.”     “How could you?” Aurora asked curiously.      “I’m going to be a part of this and I haven’t even been successful in separating the blood so-”     “You don’t have to worry about that,” Aurora reassured Mags. “You are not actively participating, hon.” She said. “I am siphoning from you to magnify my power.” She chuckled. “I’ll be more than juiced up for this. Besides, anything that happens is on me-” she looked at Magdalyn. “Not you, alright?” She gave her a reassuring smile.     “Um-okay.” She replied. "But the idea that everyone will blame you if something goes wrong doesn't make me feel better, aunt Aurora," Magdalyn replied.     With a chuckle, Aurora dropped her head back and closed her eyes. "Just like your father-hard to reassure," She smirked. "Look, nothing will happen, darling. Everything will be fine," Aurora told Magdalyn with a smile. "I promise."     “Morning.” Aurora and Mags turned to see Kazmiyah walking in the doorway, her skin pale and her eyes encircled in darkness.     “Yeah, morning,” Aurora greeted. “Though, I understand why you kept the ‘good’ out of your greeting.”      “What...what do you mean?" Kazmiyah weakly asked while struggled to make her way toward the chair.      “Doesn’t look like there was anything good about your morning, darling” Aurora pointed out.     Kazmiyah sighed. “That is what giving ten units of blood does to you-human or not.” She replied. "Though...I guess it's no worse than having to regain enough power to even go through with a magical blood transfusion," She said, still feeling guilty about what happened the day before.      Before she could even apologize, Aurora shook her head, not even wanting to dwell on the whole of what happened yesterday, from afternoon to the heated evening. "Let's...not...dwell on the past, shall we?" She replied.     Kazmiyah shook her head. "Easier said than done," She mumbled under her breath.     "I know," Aurora returned. Trust me, she thought to herself. After their short-lived conversation, Aurora surveyed Kazmiyah closely and noticed that she had not only been weak from the donation of blood but tired. She obviously hadn't gotten any rest. “Hm.” Aurora looked at Kazmiyah and then the Alpha again. “I have to ask,” She started as she looked at the Alpha. “Are sure that you're up for this right now?” She looked at Kazmiyah, eyebrows raised. "You really...don't-"     “It's fine. I'm fine.” Kazmiyah replied. “Blood has already been taken so the only thing to do now is to get this transfusion going.”     “Whatever you say. Though, I mean is he really worth the donation after-”      “Aunt Aurora.” Mags nudged her to stop her from voicing her blunt opinion and then looked at Falcon’s unconscious body. “He’s too cute to die.”      “Don’t let that be the reason to...stop...you.”      Mags and Aurora turned around to see Roj standing at the door of the room. His words had tapered off and he just stared at straight ahead-at Mags.     “Mags, this is the touchy Beta of the Navarre Lycan pack.” Aurora introduced. Still, Rojer stood there and blankly stared at Magdalyn. “This is my niece.” Aurora watched him closely. When he didn’t respond, she snapped her fingers, becoming annoyed at his rudeness. “Is there a problem?” She asked, standing in front of Mags.      Roj snapped out of it. “No-we-we’re good.” He said and walked over to the other side of the room where Kazmiyah sat. “When are we getting this done?”     Aurora watched Roj closely as he obsessively stared at her niece. “As soon as the cavalry gets here.” She returned her attention to the Alpha. “That’s if he can last that long.” She checked his heart rate. “He doesn’t have long at all.”     “Then what are we going to do-”     “We may have to start without them?” Varick came into the room with Godfrey and a human in tow. He walked over to Kazmiyah. “Thought you might need a little nourishment after the donation.” He smiled at her and ushered the human over to Kazmiyah.     Kazmiyah was obviously hungry but she seemed to still have a problem with feeding on humans. Especially in front of others; but her need to feed made her body react to the heavy flow of blood moving through the human’s veins.      Her teeth began to elongate and her breathing became heavy. “It’s alright, Kazmiyah,” Godfrey said. “You need to feed.”      Kazmiyah looked at Aurora who raised her brow and nodded. “I might need you on this one.” She said. “So you might want to get your strength up.”      “What do you mean you may need her?” Roj asked.     Godfrey looked at Aurora incredulously. “She just gave her weight in blood, Aurora. I think she’s done her part-”     “Was...I talking to you?” She asked Godfrey sarcastically. She returned her gaze to Kazmiyah. “It’s up to you, goddess, but either way you are going to need your strength.”     Kazmiyah reluctantly stared at Falcon and then back at the human. She looked into his eyes before she said. “I'm sorry.” His stare was blank as she bent his head to the side and sunk her teeth into his neck.     As she fed, Aurora caught the doctor as he was coming in to check Falcon’s vitals. “Where is the blood?” She asked him.     “It’s being prepped and transferred as we speak.”     “Looks like I’ll be doing this alone,” Aurora muttered.      “How long will it take for you to separate the sorcerer’s blood from the goddess blood?”      “Not sure,” Aurora confessed. “With three other witches, it would have taken around five minutes.” She said. “Doesn’t seem that they’ll show.” She should have known that she couldn’t trust them.     “They’re afraid,” Varick replied. “The Alpha’s life is on the line and they don’t want to be responsible for a hiccup that may cost him his life.”     Aurora shook her head. “Fine. Then I guess it’s all on me.” She touched Falcon’s head to check his temperature. “He will not last much longer.” She said. “Where’s the blood?” She asked.      Just as she asked the question, a doctor brought the blood into the room. Aurora looked at it. “I need it out of the bag. It needs to be loose so that the blood of sorcery will be able to freely separate from the blood of the goddess moon.”     “This room isn’t sterile enough for me to just dump all of the blood out-”     Before the doctor could finish his sentence, Aurora lifted the blood bags from the cool steel bowl that they were brought in and one by one released the blood from the bag with her mind, the red liquid neatly pouring into the bowl. She willed it into the bowl. “Frost.” She whispered and no sooner she did the temperature in the room began to drop immediately and significantly. “Whatever germs find their way in his blood, he’ll heal from it,” Aurora said. “We don’t have time for specifics.” The blood began to circulate into the room. “Ready him for the transfusion.” She demanded of the doctor. “Now!” The doctor quickly placed the needle into his arm for the transfusion. “Hold on to me, Mags,” Aurora said to her niece. Magdalyn did as she was told and Aurora immediately began to tap into her power. “This might get a little woozy for you, darling.” She said and clasped her hands together.     “Wait! Wait,” Godfrey stopped her. “You’re not doing this alone are you?”      “Godfrey now is not the time to be feigning concern,” Aurora said. “Back off.”     “What-”     “She’s right, son,” Varick said, pulling him back. “Let’s see what she can do.”     Aurora's brow raised at Varick's comment before she glanced at Godfrey and then closed her eyes and cornered her mind and power on the blood. “Alohida!” She chanted and as she did, she immediately separated her hands from each other, her eyes immediately opening, revealing a pair of eyes, exuberant in their amethyst glow and dilated a shade darker than her normal hue, her gaze pulsating with power.      The blood began to separate at the base, splitting itself in half. “That was easy!” Rojer exclaimed.     “Not over yet.” Mags clarified weakly to the Beta. “She’s not done!” She whispered. “It’s never that easy.”     “Umthakathi mkhulu.” Aurora said, her voice almost dual as it began to magnify in power. “kusuka kunkulunkulukazi inyanga.” She said again.     Varick listened closely and watched the young sorceress hybrid do her work. “Two separate languages for one enchantment?” He muttered. The witches created under the goddess were nothing like this in the practice of their magic. “Interesting.” He muttered.     The blood began to form into a rippling wave and disturb itself as the moon blood and the blood of the sun began to attempt to completely pull away from each other.      Aurora repositioned her hands in a motion to force them together again, but there was obvious trouble in doing so.     “Now comes the hard part.” She muttered.     She felt the blood fighting with her-felt it refusing to separate completely from one another. She had already practically used Mags by performing the initial part of the incantation. Aurora could feel at this point that Magdalyn was holding on by a thread. And if she were being honest, she wasn’t too far behind her niece.     “Hold on Mags.” She said to her as she felt her grip loosen.     “Why is it so hard?” Kazmiyah asked.      “You’re a goddess,” Aurora said. “Now...stop talking!” She hissed as she began to lose concentration. Her hands were gradually getting closer together. The blood had nearly separated, but she needed a boost. “Sol?!” She said aloud, talking to her counterpart. “I hope you’re pulling your weight!” She called to her beastly counterpart. Almost immediately after Aurora said this, another boost of power shot through her body.     “Work with what you have. That is all that I have left.” Sol said to her.     “That’ll be good enough,” Aurora whispered, her patience wearing thin with the stubbornness that was Kazmiyah’s blood. “I said, separate!” She snapped and with a large force of power, pushed her hands back into a clasped position. The sorcerer's blood was then snatched away from moon blood and placed into the middle and away from the blood of the moon.      Immediately after, Aurora collapsed to the floor and so did Mags. The blood that she held in the air, she was holding up with whatever was left of her power. “Take it.” She breathed heavily. “Separate it quickly before it combines again.” Aurora urged.      “I’ll do it-” Kazmiyah started to say.     “No!” Aurora insisted before Kazmiyah could make a move to do so. “I don’t want you in direct contact with it.” She turned her gaze back to the blood that was fighting to get back together. “This blood...has a mind of its own. Its...powerful within of itself. Almost like it was destined to conform to the blood of the sun. You interfering will more than likely make it worse.”      Kazmiyah backed away and Aurora decided then that she couldn’t afford to trust anyone else to deal with it. “Éget.” She said and balled her hand up as she did. As her hand closed in and slowly formed into a fist, the sorcerer’s blood began to disintegrate into ash. When it was gone, she led the pure goddess blood into a metal bowl that the doctor had brought in so as not to re-contaminate it with whatever could have been left around in the last bowl. Though, Aurora was quite sure that the sorcerer’s blood was gone.      “Why didn’t you just destroy it like that in the first place?” Rojer asked.     Aurora haggardly tried to check on an immensely weakened Mags. When she heard the question she glared at Roj.     “So, I wouldn’t…” Before she could finish her sentence, she passed out.     “Aurora!” Godfrey rushed to her with Kazmiyah following closely behind. He picked her unconscious body up from the floor. He looked at Roj. “Grab her niece. They need rest.” He said and headed out of the door.     Rojer stepped over to Mags but she was trying hard to get up on her own. “I’m fine.” She weakly insisted. “I just-I’ll,” Her knees buckled from underneath her, and Roj caught her before she could hit the ground again.      He lifted her and immediately felt a lively shock shoot through him, one that sent shivered up his spine when he touched her. He tried to stop it but the feeling that she aroused from him was uncontrollable. Rojer took a deep breath and cleared his throat in an attempt to save face before teasingly added. “Doesn’t seem like you’re fine at all.” He smiled. Mags timidly looked away as he took her out of the room, all the while wondering what he had just experienced.      During the commotion, the doctor had begun the transfusion. Varick grabbed the human that Kazmiyah had nearly bled dry. “I guess I’ll take this one home to recuperate.” He said. “I’ll also let Beta Baz know what’s going on so that he can alert the Alpha.”     Kazmiyah nodded and sat next to Falcon. “Varick,” She called to the Elder.     Varick turned around and looked at the young goddess. “Yes, little moon?”      Kazmiyah felt that he seemed to already catch a hint at what her question would be. “Where is he?” She asked. “My father?”     Varick returned her question with a smile. “Where do you think?” He asked. He watched on as Kazmiyah rolled her eyes before he spoke again. “The Alpha does have two daughters, Kazmiyah,” Varick said. “And while he knows that Alora is wrong, he also realizes that whatever is going on here, you can take care of yourself. What kind of father would he be if he didn’t check on the one who could not?” He reassured her. “But we both know who the favorite is.” He winked.     When he said this, Kazmiyah blushed and looked away. “Thanks, Varick.” She said.     When everyone was cleared out of the room, Kazmiyah relaxed against Falcon’s bed. “Now, I guess we just have to wait.”
