I looked around Aunt Jen’s room for anything that was out of place, but everything was perfect. She had no reason to just run away, since Damien wasn’t going to hurt her.
‘Is Damien aware?’ I asked Aubrey as we scanned the room together.
‘No one leaves without his knowledge.’ Considering all that has happened, I’m sure Damien was relieved the moment she said she was leaving. But she could have waited for me.
‘I know what you’re thinking. If she had waited for you, you would have stopped her. She said I should tell you that you mean the world to her, and she would stop at nothing to keep you safe, even if it means staying away from you.’ I nodded at Aubrey and told her she could leave. I wanted to search the room alone, in case she left any clues for me behind.
