Chapter 1
The building was engulfed in flames, Noah, Kiera and Mitch had nothing to do with it, this time. They had been messing around in the basement when a nasty smell appeared. Before they even got time to investigate, the building erupted in flames. Noah blamed the heat.
The trio ran as fast as they could before the fire speared and were trapped inside.
“Are we all here? Are we good?” Noah asked, trying to catch his breath.
“What do you mean ‘all’? There are only three of us,” Kiera gasped, hands on her knees as she tried to catch her breath.
“I'm impressed she managed to run in heels, I thought surely the b***h would die,” Mitch mumbled. Noah glared daggers at his best friend, who shrugged.
“Don’t call her a female dog, Mitch,” Noah replied.
The trio stood and watched the abandoned building burn away to nothing. Noah realised, that if he had said the same thing as Mitch, there would have been some rhyming.
“I think we should go before my mother gets here. She’ll just take everything the wrong way,” Noah said, frowning a little.
“I’ll ring Reece,” Kiera groaned. “He is going to kill me for being stupid with you two.”
“We are your best friends,” Noah retorted. “He should be used to you being stupid with us.” Kiera shrugged as she bit the inside of her cheek.
The heat from the fire was making them a lot warmer, and the blaring sun wasn’t helping his situation.
“Don’t take it personally. Reece is an asshole that doesn’t like anyone,” she replied as she rang her older brother.
“Well,” Noah said, a smile on his face. “R.I.P to us. I’ll see you in Hell, Mitch.” Noah sighed, knowing very well that Recce would kill them.
“Reece!” Kiera exclaimed on the phone. “So, the thing is, I need you to come to pick me, Noah and Mitch, up. Yeah, we’re in that abandoned building near the field. You'll see it from a mile away because it's burning down.”
Kiera hung up as she turned to grin at her friends. “So, on a scale from one to ten, you’re at a six.”
“It’s better than ten,” Noah said, causing Kiera’s grin to widen and a frown etched up on Mitch’s face.
“Oh, that was a good time,” Kiera replied.
Mitch groaned. “We do not talk about that.”
In the distance, you could hear the police sirens as well as the fire brigade. Noah knew they had to be annoyed by the number of buildings that randomly caught on fire.
“Sheriff is here,” Kiera muttered, Noah's eyes widened at the sheriff's car that was pulling up in the distance.
Thankfully, Reece pulled up. Noah frowned a little, the Knightly household was twenty minutes from here, but he got here in under five minutes, Noah wanted to know how and why. There was nothing but abandoned buildings in this area,
The trio climbed in haphazardly. Reece turned to glare at the kids through the middle of the driver’s and passenger’s seat.
“Did you shits burn down a building?” he snapped. The trio shrugged innocently.
Reece was acting as if he had never burned one down himself. Yes, it had been a huge accident, but nonetheless, it still burned down.
“No,” Noah said. “It was already burning and we came to make s’mores. I’d give you some but - yeah, I don't have an excuse. No s’mores for you,” Noah said and Reece scowled at him.
“I'm not in the mood for your sass, Noah,” Reece deadpanned.
Kiera sighed. “No one ever is. Hi, Clark.”
“Oh, hey guys,” Clark mumbled, peeling his eyes away from his phone to smile at them before looking back down, typing away furiously.
Reece drove away. Noah kept making eye contact with Reece through the mirror, bored he would make a funny face, Reece snorted and then made on back when it was safe to do so. Noah smiled, at times like this, Reece didn’t scare the hell out of Noah, in fact, at times like this, Noah might have even said Reece was fun. Due to this, the ride went by, pretty quickly.
Reece dropped the trio off at his house, Noah had noticed Clark had barely spoken up and wanted to know who he was texting so persistently.
“I say you two stay over and we watch ‘The Purge’ tonight,” Kiera said, grinning, Mitch returned her smile. Noah paled, he didn’t like horror movies.
The three went up to Kiera’s room, Kiera was on Netflix, trying to find something to watch in the meantime.
“I don’t want to watch the purge, I don’t like horror,” Noah said. Kiera shrugged as Noah sighed, he left her room and made his way to the kitchen pouring himself a glass of water and drinking the entire thing.
When Noah came back to the room, Kiera grinned.
"It's two against one, though. Tell your parents or siblings. I'll let my mum know," she said walking out of the room, she ran back, gave Noah a peck on the lips and ran back.
Noah eyed her bed, well, if they were going to be staying and watching horror, the least they could do was have a pillow fight. Noah ran to her bed, and began jumping on it, Mitch grinned as he copied, and the boys began throwing pillows at one another.
Kiera walked in and scowled at the two boys. “Boys,” she said, sighing. But she climbed onto her bed, launching a pillow in Noah’s direction. Noah retaliated and threw one at Mitch, which hit him in the chest. He scowled as he threw two at once, and they both hit their targets.
The door flew open and all three stopped to stare at the 5’10, annoyed female, with her black hair with sky blue highlights. Her black eyes narrowed on them, her weird sense of fashion a little jarring.
“So,” she began, smacking her lips together. “I just ran into Reece. We had a fun little conversation. YOU MOTHERFUCKERS BURNT DOWN A BUILDING?!"
"No! —" Noah began, but she interrupted him again. Noah frowned, he wanted to know why no one ever let him finish a sentence.
"Noah, you reply with sass, I'll run you over. Again," Noah stared at her in horror.
"You monster," he said as she glared at them.
When the four of them were younger, Ell had run Noah over with a car. That was an awkward trip to the ER. Noah smiled a little as he watched Reece panic. And then get yelled at for smiling, when he just got hit by a car.
"That was fun," Kiera chimed in and Noah glared at her. "Sorry boo, it's sisters before misters,” she said as she walked over to Ell and wrapped her arms around her and kissed her cheek.
"Well. You all set it up, I'm going to get food because I forgot to eat," Noah mumbled as he got down from the bed and fixed himself a little.
"Probably, because you were gaming," Ell said as she smacked his arm. "How many times? Remember to f*****g eat!"
"Yes, mother." He rolled his eyes at her and went down the stairs and into the kitchen. Checking all the cupboards, they were empty and then his eyes landed on Reece's cupboard.
That cupboard always had the best food in it and was strictly forbidden to them. "Reece?" Noah yelled and he got no reply.
Maybe he wasn't back yet. Noah opened it and snatched a box of Oreos. Quietly closing the cabinet, he ran up the stairs. If he found out Noah took his food, he'd kill him. And, Noah kind of wanted to live.
All three of them were settled on Kiera's bed and facing the TV opposite her bed. "Those are Reece's Oreos," Kiera said as Noah made his way over to them and sat next to Mitch.
"I'm aware, don't tell him.,” Noah said, as he opened the limited flavour Oreos and began munching on them.
"I won't. But if he finds out, it's your funeral."
"Can't I just play a game on my phone? I mean, you three can watch 'The Purge'?" Noah asked as he watched the three.
"No," Ell said, annoyed. She had changed into some of Kiera's clothes and Mitch slept shirtless anyway and he had sweatpants on today anyway. "You need to take a break from gaming. You're watching it with us."
"But," he whined. "I don't even like it!"
"Tough s**t," Mitch grumbled and Noah smacked him as he played it. Noah kept himself distracted, daydreaming and singing songs in his head.
It worked. At some points, his eyes would wander to the TV and he’d witness some scary things. Mitch being the clever human he was, jumped a little and he spilt his drink all over Noah’s shirt.
"Oh, god, Mitch!" Noah hissed and he shrugged casually.
"Sorry," he mumbled, not taking his eyes off of the TV.
"Kiera," Noah groaned and she sighed.
"It's around one in the morning, Reece should be in his room. Go ask him for a shirt and put yours in the washer."
A little noise escaped Noah’s throat. What would Noah do if Reece found out he had taken his Oreos?
Noah took his shirt off, holding it in his hand and he walked into Reece's room. He knocked and let himself in.
He rarely entered Reece’s room, and a few things had changed since he’d last been in. The bed was now on the opposite side of his room, his sparse desk was under the window, and the only thing on there was his MacBook. His room was still as messy as ever.
Reece ripped his earphones out as he scowled at Noah. "Why are you in my room, shirtless?" he asked, exasperated.
"Mitch spilt his drink on me. I need a shirt," Noah said and Reece gestured to his draw.
"Help yourself. I'm not getting up," he mumbled as he shifted so his duvets fell off and his torso was exposed. His well-formed, and tattooed torso.
There was an intricate skull near the top part of his torso that carried on to his right arm with patterns.
"Since when did you get a tattoo?" Noah asked.
"Since when is it your business?"
"Since when do you care what my business is?"
"Since your business messes with my business."
“But my business isn’t messing with your business. I’m just curious about your business,” Noah said as he walked over to the black chest drawers and pulled out a short-sleeved shirt that had a skull on it.
"Not that. That's my favourite shirt." Noah grinned as he slipped it on. It was large on him, the right side hung off of his small shoulders.
"Great! I'll make sure to spill some food on it!" Noah yelled laughing a little.
"Noah!" Reece yelled as he threw his pillow at him, just as Noah shut the door.
Noah’s eyes went wide. He wanted to know if he was suicidal.
First, he stole his Oreos and then he took his favourite shirt. But, Noah did not want to go back to watching 'The Purge'. He went downstairs and back to the kitchen to look for food, what? Noah ate a lot, when he remembered to, he was a healthy boy.
"Reece?!" Noah whispered and when he got no reply, he went to his cupboard, ruffling around and he got himself a pack of salt and vinegar crisps.
Noah grinned as he turned around and bumped into someone's chest. "Please, tell me that Mitch drank something and suddenly grew a tattoo," he mumbled and as he slowly looked up, Reece looked down glaring at him and Noah let out a little squeak.
"That's my food."
"Really?" Noah said. "I don't see your name anywhere on it."
Oh, Noah was thankful, he didn't like Reece's. Otherwise, that would've been a dumb thing to say.
"My name is literally on the cupboard.” Reece pointed to the label that had his name on it in his block handwriting, and Noah shrugged.
"Well, who wudda thunk." Noah smiled at him and he put his hand out, Noah smacked it and Reece continued to glare at him.
"I don't need a high five. I need my crisps."
"Well, then it seems like you're going to have to pry them from my cold, dead hands."
"It does seem like that, doesn't it?"
Noah’s eyes widened as he broke off on a run. He couldn't go up the stairs, he knew he'd catch him quicker, so he ran to the living room, and made it so that the sofa was in between them. He was glad the TV was hung to the wall, so he didn’t need to be as wary, the only thing screaming danger was the glass table a few inches behind his legs.
"Jesus, I hate Kiera's friends. Why can't she have normal friends?!" he growled mostly to himself.
"I am normal."
"Yes, that's why you're standing on the other side of a couch, about to run for your life because if I get my hands on you, I'm going to kill you. See, that's not normal."
"Actually at my house, it was. I always used to steal Cameron's food. He hated it when I did that," Noah said, smiling a little. He missed Cam.
"So why do you think I like it?!" Reece yelled, frustrated. He jumped at Noah, over the couch and launched himself onto Noah. Noah barely got out of the room before he felt Reece on his back, and the two went toppling over, Reece somehow managing to straddle him.
"Excuse you, I have a girlfriend. And you're heavy as hell," Noah groaned, smacking Reece’s well-formed chest. It was hard, holding the crisps and hitting him. Noah tried to wiggle his way out but Reece leaned down, slamming his shoulders onto the ground.
"Stop moving around,” Reece hissed, a little out of breath. “And you have my food."
"I see you have your priorities straight. I really should not be pushing you off."
Everyone knew that Reece was a force to be reckoned with, he was always in trouble with the sheriff. Noah would know as he was the sheriff's son and the number of times his mother had come home stressed because of him was unbelievable.
"You need to stop stressing my mother out," Noah said, eyes narrowed at him and he scowled.
"She should stop getting involved in my business."
"It's her business when you're doing illegal stuff."
"Dammit, Reece! Stop straddling Noah," Kiera snapped walking over to the two boys, trying to get her older and much heavier brother off her boyfriend.
"He has my crisps," Reece said like it was the most important thing in the world.
"But — food," Noah said, shoving some in his mouth, which he regretted because he had bitten his lip earlier and now the salt stung the wound.
"Here! Take your crisps! They hurt me!" Noah shoved them into Reece's chest and he smirked standing up. He patted Kiera's head and went up to his room.
"Since I'm sure you don't want to continue watching 'The Purge' with us, how about you go to McDonald's?"
"Alone?" Noah asked, mortified.
"Of course not, I'm not mean. I'll get Reece to go with you."
"He tried to kill me five minutes ago," Noah said and she sighed.
"Please baby." She kissed me and he kissed her back.
"Fine, I'll go," he muttered and she smiled as she jumped on the spot.
"I'll get Reece, don't worry, I'll make sure he doesn't harm you."
"That's so reassuring, thank you."
"No problem, babe. Reece! Get your ass down here!"
"What b***h?!" he yelled from the top of the stairs.
"f**k you, asshole! Down, now!"
"Will my kids stop shouting?!" Bethany shouted from somewhere around the house.
"I will once Reece gets his ass down here!" Kiera yelled and Reece groaned in frustration as he stormed down the stairs, still shirtless.
"What?!" he hissed, annoyed.
"Both of you go to McDonald's," Kiera deadpanned.
"I'd rather blow Clark," Reece replied, as he walked over to Noah, shoving him out the way to get to his cabinet and pulling out some Reece's.
Noah scrunched up my nose in disgust. He did not like Reece. The human or the chocolate. Both were nasty in his opinion.
"If it helps, I'll pay," Kiera added cheerfully as she waved her card around and Reece instantly perked up at that.
"You could've just said that," he said as he walked past her, snatching the card out of her hand.
He went back up the stairs probably to grab a shirt and he stormed back down with a thin black tank on. Noah silently followed him.
The car ride to McDonald's was silent, so Noah played a match, he was the last one surviving, his heart was pounding as he tried to find the dungeon. The hunter was standing beside it and he knew he had one shot, he went to the wall, and used the holy key and somehow, managed to jump down. A sigh of relief escaped his mouth as he sat up straight.
Reece parked the car and both boys went inside. Noah wanted to know why this place was so busy. It is almost two in the freaking morning. Didn’t these people sleep?!
Reece stood in the queue and Noah stood beside him, but he hid behind him when Noah recognised some kids from school
"What? What are you doing?" Reece asked, amusement in his voice as he turned around to face Noah..
"Uh, nothin'."
"You're a shitty liar."
"Am not," Noah retorted, sticking his tongue out at him and he glared.
"Your ears are red," he said, a smile creeping onto his face. He brushed Noah’s hair away from his ear and grabbed it. Noah tried pulling away, it was ticklish.
"So?"
"Your ears go red when you lie,” Reece replied, a smirk on his face.
"No, they do not," Noah said, looking at the group of boys. They hadn’t seemed to notice him yet.
"Yes, they do. Now, what's up?"
"Would you believe me if I said I'm hiding?" Noah said, prying his eyes away from the group.
"Yes."
"Then I'm hiding."
"From?"
"Aliens."
"Haha. Who?"
"Humans."
"Noah," he said, his voice changing slightly.
"People?" Noah asked, looking up at him.
"Noah," he added, this time glaring at him.
"Fine. You see those two boys over there near the counter?"
"The jocks?"
"Yup."
"You're hiding from the jocks?" he asked, sounding irritated.
"Yup."
"Why?"
"Oh look. It's Nana Noah."
Noah winced. "That's why."
"Oh, this is going to be interesting," Reece said, sounding rather amused. Noah glared at his back as he had now turned around. Noah grabbed onto Reece's shirt, he was praying he got the message that he didn't want him to move and that Noah was sacred.
"You're a meanie," Noah said, scowling at Reece. He returned to look at the boy. "Go away, Beau."
"Are you getting your regular?" Reece asked Noah who nodded.
"Yep and since Kiera is paying, get everything large."
He smirked. "You read my mind."
"Oi! I'm talking to you," Beau hissed annoyed, and Noah glared at him.
"And I'm talking to Reece, wait your turn," Noah snapped at him.
"I will smash your face in," he threatened and Noah felt shivers run down his spine. Noah paled, he hoped he didn’t. Noah still had the scars from his previous colourful beating.
"I'd like to see you try," Reece said, glaring daggers at Beau who was scowling at Noah. Yes, he smiled, his girlfriend's brother is in for the save.
"Oh, is that your boyfriend? Always knew you were a fag, is that his shirt you're wearing? Disgusting," Beau spat, Noah ignored the little sting in his chest as he commented on being fags.
But somehow, Noah found that Reece's reaction hurt more.
"I'd never date Noah. What the f**k, that's disgusting," Reece spat and Noah nodded slightly, yes, of course, he wouldn't. But, damn, he didn’t have to be so mean about it. Noah would have politely said he wouldn’t date Reece. There was no need to call it disgusting.
"How about we all just go back to eating?" Noah said. "Pretend we never even saw each other."
"Or, how about I just smash your face in," Curtis said and Noah glared at him. Couldn't he just keep his mouth shut?
Their number was called up and Reece grabbed it, he held the drinks and Noah held the bag which held their food. Beau roughly pushed Noah and he stumbled back and right into Reece and he spilt their drinks all over him.
Noah paled. Oh, no.
"Reece," he began and Reece glared at me. "I'm-"
"Don't you dare say sorry," he snapped and Noah winced. "Noah, sit down." Noah was going to give a sarcastic reply but when Reece glared at him, he kept his mouth shut and just sat down on the closest seat available.
Reece dropped the now-spilt drinks onto the door as people watched. He lunged at Beau punching him square in the face. The both of them began to wrestle it out and Noah watched for a minute before he saw the blood on Reece's knuckles.
Just as Reece was about to strike him again, Noah put the food down and grabbed his arm with both his hands and Reece froze. "Don't. Please."
"Noah, let me go."
"Reece, please. Don't. You'll hurt yourself more."
"But he —" Reece began and Noah raised an eyebrow.
"Whatever he did, just drop it. Okay? He's messed up and you've messed your knuckles over. Let's just go," Noah said quietly, ignoring the looks they were getting from everyone else.
"Not without our drinks we're not." He stood up and turned to Curtis. "Unless you want to get beat up, like your friend here, you will order our drinks again and you'll be paying."
Curtis just did as he was told and ordered their drinks as Reece took off his wet shirt. He was getting eyed down by everyone, but he ignored it as he grabbed their new drinks from Curtis and the both of them left. It was weird, the crowd had split and Reece stormed off and Noah followed behind quietly.
The car ride was okay until Noah opened up his mouth. "Reece, I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault," he dismissed easily.
"But, I'm still sorry."
"Why? You didn't do anything."
"But I was the one who bumped into you."
"Because Beau pushed you! Now drop it."
Once we got back to the Knightly house, Noah walked up to Kiera's room and handed her the food and drinks. "I'll be back, I have to do something." She nodded, not taking her eyes off of the TV and Noah walked to the bathroom, was this a good idea?
Yes. No. Maybe. He didn't know.
Noah grabbed the first aid kit and walked into Reece's room. "Knock, you assfuck."
"Yea, yea," Noah said. Reece was sitting on his bed, his food to the side, he was FaceTiming Clark and had a show playing in the background.
Noah grinned. He was the one who had told him to watch this. When Noah had finished watching it, he hadn’t shut up about it and was getting everyone to watch it.
"Hey, Clark," Noah said.
"Hey, Noah," he replied. "Why are you in his room?"
"Why is your room so dark?" Noah asked. Clark looked next to him, grumbled something and just made a bunch of incoherent noises.
"It just is."
"Clark. Reece will ring you later," Noah said loud enough for him to hear. Reece raised an eyebrow as Clark hung up without a second glance. Reece stared at his phone, almost confused.
"Did he just hang up on me?" Reece was talking to himself,
"Yes?" Noah said anyway. Reece sighed as he threw his phone to the side and gave Noah his full attention.
"What do you want?" Reece asked as he sat up to look at him.
"Let me at least clean your knuckles up, because from the dry blood I'm guessing you didn't even wash your hands. And you're eating and that's so unhygienic, Reece."
"Why?" he asked, confused.
"Because of hygiene?" Noah said as he crouched in between the older boy’s legs. Noah got on his knees and opened the first aid kit, he grabbed the alcohol wipes. "This will sting like a lot."
He nodded and Noah felt him inhale deeply as he cleaned his cuts. Noah tried to be as gentle as possible.
Next, he put some ointment on them and then bandaged them up just to be extra. Reece flexed his fingers and eyed my handiwork.
"You're not shit."
"Thanks, I think," Noah said, slightly confused.
Noah put away the stuff and just as he was out of the room he heard Reece call him. "Since you're here, can you grab me a shirt?"
"I'm gonna wear this," Noah said, motioning to the one he was wearing. "I don't know when you'll get it back, I like it."
Reece narrowed his eyes on him. "I want that shirt back."
"Yeah, yeah."
Noah handed him a dark shirt from his closet, he smiled at Reece before walking out of his room. He went down the hallway, which was littered with framed photos and into Kiera’s room.
"What was all that about?" Mitch asked.
Noah shrugged as he took a sip of his coke and made himself comfy on Kiera's bed. He draped an arm around Kiera’s shoulder and she snuggled into his chest.
"Nothing."
