Chapter 5

(Luciana POV) "Your highness, isn’t it better we reconsider? Many of the council members decided to join because of the rumor of finding your mate." Melissa asked as she helped me with my hair. "I know the consequence." I only smiled at her. It is a big risk but it's not like I have many choices. I am sure escorting me is the last thing my mate wants. Ahhh... just thinking about this s**t hurts. I tapped my aching chest before standing up. "Let's get this over with." As I was looking at the mirror I last time, a knock resonated around the door. Melissa opened the door and I watched as he froze on the spot. "I-I was umm asked to escort the Queen." a familiar voice grumbled making my eyes widen. Forgetting my ethics I ran to the door and surely it was my mate. He wore another noble outfit, this time red and it surprisingly matches mine. His eyes widen as he looked at me from top to bottom, his sharp blue eyes making me let out an involuntary shiver. "You're ready?" he asked informally but a smacking sound was heard before he let out a painful groan. "What the hell!" he shouted as he looked behind at a shorter figure. "Oh, Luna Adella." "Praise to your majesty." she said bowing her head and giving a small smile. "I am sorry for my brother-in-law's disrespectful behavior." She said as I waved my hand. "It is alright. But may I know what is happening?" "Well, I thought it was only appropriate if your mate escorts you to the party. If you don't mind that is." I looked at her and then at my mate. He was avoiding my gaze and looking away. He doesn't even want to look at me. I chuckled and waved my hand. "I appreciate your kind motive but it is fine. My lady in waiting will accompany me." Both their eyes widen probably shocked at how easily I rejected this. It is obvious that there will be a lot of talks when they see Queen walking in alone when she already has found her mate. "But your highness..." Melisa tried to interfere but she stopped upon seeing my glare. "Umm yes. Thank you, Luna and Young Alpha Nero for the offer but we should stick with the plan. Changes in the plan for the last minute will cause problems." she bowed her head as Luna sighed. "Alright. I am sorry for disturbing your highness. We will see you at the banquet." With that, the both of them walked away. Once the door closed Melissa looked at me with a frown. "Your majesty..." "We will no longer hold this conversation." I voiced before she continues. She sighs and bowed her head in respect. "Yes your highness." ------ "Your Highness Queen Luciana Elain Ragnar of the kingdom of Lesdara has arrived." Everyone became silent as they stood up and bowed upon my entry. "Welcome your highness." Alpha Kennedy bowed to me before extending his hand. I took it and he guided me to the raised platform. The usual long speech routine followed before I officially announced the beginning of the banquet. Many nobles and eminent businessmen came forward and interacted with me but my focus was trained on my mate who was standing at the corner. He looked relaxed as he leaned to the tree, drinking alcohol while he laughed at the jokes made by his friend. At times he would look my way, mostly resulting in eye contact followed by both of us looking away flushed. Well, at least he feels such emotion with me. "Your majesty." a new face came forward and I looked at a young man probably around his mid twenties. "I am Duke Silverin. We had met in the hunting festival 2 years back where I offered you a deer as a gift." he smiled bowing gracefully. "Oh Duke Silverin, it is a pleasure to meet you again." I smiled giving a small nod. To be honest I have no idea who he is. Being the queen I had received 100s of gifts from men. I can't even remember the ones I received last year and he expects me to remember a 2 year old incident. He started to talk about random things, his family background, business, etc. I just randomly nodded and commented the usual 'I am impressed.' 'You are very hardworking' etc. My eyes went over to the place my mate stood but I frowned. He was missing. All his friends seem to be there but he was missing. "Umm excuse me." I said as I bowed to him and walked away. My eyes roamed over the open area, occasionally smiling and greeting people. I stopped seeing him with a bunch of kids. I could help but smile. He was on his knees laughing like a bunch of kids danced around him. "Well at least he is good with kids." a voice came as I rolled my eyes and looked behind. James grinned at me, his voice clearly laced with amusement. "I thought you left." I said raising my eyebrow at him. "No." his face became serious. "Most of the council members are here. We still don't know who is your attacker and this situation is quite vulnerable." In a split second a scream erupted in the air. My head whipped in the direction of the scream and my eyes widened. "OMG!" I shouted as we ran to the troubled place. A tree was on fire and it seems to be spreading to the rest of the trees fast. "This is definitely magic!" James shouted making me nod. Ordinary fire doesn't spread this fast. Within a few seconds, almost half of the trees are burning. "Get the people to safety!" I shouted at my guards before doing it myself. The task took about an hour but we were able to guide everyone to safety. James and the other witches started to put off the fire. As I turned to put down a child I save, I felt something shine from the side of my vision. Almost immediately an arrow was shot towards me. "Look out!" I shouted as I pulled the girl towards me while dodging the arrow. There was a man next to me I couldn’t move much. The arrow shot past me but because of my restricted movement, it scratched my arm. 'Urgh..." I growled, my hand covering my wound. Of course. They were just waiting for my vizier to run off so they can attack me. The child in my hand screamed. A loud deadly growl filled the air and my head whipped to my mate. He was glaring at my wound before looking at the direction the arrow came from. Almost immediately I felt a shadow jump from the tree before running to the forest. Before I could respond my mate ran after him full speed. I tried to stand but went on my knees groaning at the pain. The thing was obviously coated silver which is poisonous for us. "You're Majesty!" Melissa ran beside me before looking at my wound. She started to order around, telling them to0 bring the necessaries but my eyes were trained to the direction the two of them ran off to. Before Melissa could treat my wound, I sprint in the direction. I could them shout for me but I didn't care. I stopped midway looking around at the huge forest. "Where are you....?" I muttered but as if my question has answered a scream filled around. I dashed in the direction. It was clearly not my mate's voice but that still didn't lessen my worry for him. I stopped at a small opening. I couldn’t help but let out a small scream. The sight before me made me want to vomit my gut out. His eyes were not blue but a dangerous red. The moonlight highlighted his mid-night hair. He was barring his teeth, his sharp canines covered with blood. He reminded me of the red-eyes werewolf monster that was told in the children's book. An untamed monster who doesn’t hesitate to kill anyone.
