“I Saved You To Save Myself”

Ranveer's Point Of View: I immediately opened the door and ran out in haste. The door was locked from inside. "Devika!", I shouted at the top of my voice. No reply came. I tried to break the door but to no avail. It didn't flinch an inch. I could feel panic take over. If she died - it would be my fault! I will be like my father - tyrant, heartless, inhuman. A man who killed his wife. "Devika! Open the goddamn door!", I should - no reply. I hit the door again. It got luckily got itself unlocked. I barged in as I saw her standing at the window. She turned towards me in astonishment. Like an involuntary action I immediately hugged her tightly. It seemed as if I was breathing after hours. She stood immobile. In shock. Devika's Point Of View: I could not move. This man was so confusing. He had hurt me and now he was hugging me and crying as if his life depended on me. After a while he slowly released me from his grip. His face looked nearly white. "Why the hell do you not answer when someone knocks at the door?!", He asked breathlessly. "Why do you even care?! I could have happily been dead-", he placed his finger on my lips. "You must not be.", He said. This time he was not speaking emotionlessly. In fact he had a billion emotions bubbling inside him but he could not express. "And why do you even care?", I asked removing his finger. "Because.. because I need you to be alive...Because.. People. People will think I killed you and I don't want to spend the rest of my life in jail.", He said. It was a white lie. He was hiding something. He wanted to look heartless and he was not. He did not care for me, though. He did for somebody. I had to know who that lucky person was. After all, you do not have a gangster caring for you that way always. I turned away from him, back towards the window. The sun was setting in the horizon. "Thank you for your concern.", I said mechanically. "I did it, not to save you - to save myself.", He said and left as I turned back towards the route he had just walked out of. Save himself? But how? I did not understand the logic. I had to know why he was doing this. I walked out of my room towards him as he strode across the empty corridor. "Ranveer!", I called onto him. I did not know from where I had got the courage but I had to know him. Understand him. Ranveer paused and turned towards me. "What?", He asked coating his voice once again with the same loath he used to speak to me. I somehow could not bring myself to ask him. Truly I was not brave enough. After all, when I had got the courage, he was vulnerable but now he was not. "Nothing.", I said as he left immediately. I walked back to my room and locked myself. I sat on the bed in deep thought. I remembered his face when I was howling with pain holding my wrist. He had turned white as if the ghost of his past had become vivid in front of his eyes. It immediately struck me. Maybe that is what it was all about. His past. I stood up. I had to meet that man called Vinod. He knew his past. After all no man in his senses would kill his father. I walked out of the room through the dark corridor. I did not know where to find Vinod but I knew that Ranveer's car had visited him often. I walked up to his driver and asked him to take me there. I sat inside the car. I had to know his past. •••
