Chapter Fourteen
Suddene was a yellow strip on the horizon. The ocean surged below, deep blue and scattered with the foamy crests of high waves. What effect would millions of rotting Fila corpses have on the water? Every other marine organism had died, too. If Kes and the other scientists managed to neutralize the biocide, would the ocean ever recover from the massive disturbance to its chemical balance? Would any surviving Fila ever be able to return to it?
At least Quinn had survived, Cherry reflected. By a lucky stroke of fate, her decision to stand up to the Scythians hadn’t resulted in his death too. Compared to the numbers of anonymous Fila who had died, her friend’s survival was only a minor consolation, but she would take it. She needed every small comfort she could get.
