Chapter 3 Evan stood on the wall-walk, well out of sight of the guard captain. He drew his sword and held it aloft, letting the lightning shoot through the steel and into his body. Fire flared to life within him, surging through his veins like quicksilver. He pointed his sword to the balcony where a single face could be seen through the darkness of the room beyond. He crooked his finger and beckoned to the man waiting there. The captain grumbled and disappeared into the barracks. Just an hour or so ago, Evan had outwitted the surly bastard once again, although the cut on his thigh proved that the guards were certainly getting better. He’d managed to escape them, disappearing into the shadows. William would have his head on a pike for that one. Evan jumped down off of the wall-walk and s
