Chapter 5
Taylor drives the hearse to Eckert’s and I follow behind him in my car. Part of me is already thinking ahead to the tasks that will need to be done and how I’ll fit Mrs. Duran into my schedule today, but part of me still can’t quite comprehend what’s happened. Where will Riley go now after school? I guess I’ll bring her by the funeral home, that’s where I spent most of my childhood, after all. She can keep herself busy in the staff break room, maybe. There’s a TV in there, at least. But what if Riley overhears someone talking about Mrs. Duran’s death?
I can’t protect her forever, I remind myself. Besides, she wasn’t upset about it this morning. Hell, Riley was the one who told me she was dead, so it isn’t like she doesn’t already know.
