Bad Luck

OLIVIA I watched as Anna paced back and forth across my room, mumbling incoherent words to herself. Suddenly, she stopped and turned to face me, with a frown on her face. "What was that about? How can you.... Geez! You've changed so much that I'm speechless. How can you let that old woman talk to you like that and you just let it slide? She even raised her hand to hit you, the audacity!" She exclaimed, her voice trembling with anger. "Don't tell me you've been letting her walk all over you all these time! Just thinking about it is making me furious!" She fumed, running her hand through her hair. I couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction, wondering who should be getting angry here. Anna moved closer and sat beside me. "About the child, were you really pregnant? Tell me everything, and don't skip even the tiniest details," she urged, her voice was barely above whisper. Taking a deep breath, I began narrating everything to her, leaving no stone unturned this time. When I finished, she pulled me into a tight hug. "Cheer up. It’s all over now. It’s okay to start over," she said softly, trying to console me. A knock sounded at the door, causing us to disengage from the hug. Lewis opened the door and stepped inside. "You should come down for dinner, the whole family is here," he said. My breath caught in my throat at his words. The whole family- that meant Dad, Gavin, Cory, Alex..... everyone. The same family I had turned my back on, in chasing that fairytale feeling called ‘love’. I walked down the stairs quietly, with Anna just beside me, babbling away, but her voice trailed off, sounding distant. I wasn't listening to whatever she was saying. "Look who we have here," Cory, who first sighted me, exclaimed, drawing everyone's attention to me. I played with my finger nervously, guilt eating me up. "Welcome back, kid sis," Alex said, flashing me a warm smile which instantly made my feel at ease. With everything that had happened with Asher, I had almost forgotten what family truly meant. One that stays together, forgives each other, cries together, and accepts each other’s flaws—that’s what a true family is. "We are glad you are back," Gavin chirped, his eyes glued to his phone. I settled into my seat, my gaze fixed on dad, who hadn't said a word to me. "Dad..." I trailed off, unsure of how to continue. I'm glad you realized he isn't worth your time," Dad said, his voice firm, yet gentle. "I’m sure you’ve learned your lesson. You have an empire to inherit; mistakes like that shouldn't happen again." Tears filled my eyes and rolled down my cheeks. I was back home to my supportive and ever loving family, and with an empire to inherit. In that moment, I'd successfully closed the chapter with Asher. "I love you all, and thanks for accepting me back," I muttered, wiping the tears from my cheeks. I turned to Lewis, who gave me an ‘I told you’ look, making me smile broadly. The dinner continued in silence until Anna exclaimed, while staring at her phone. "You sure have a lot of admirers already! Looks like a line of suitors is forming at the door," She winked, passing her phone to me. Gavin had uploaded a picture of us, eating together, with the caption: ‘Dinner with my long-lost sister. Welcome back to the family, kiddo! I love you!’ In less than two minutes, the post already had lots of views and comments. Gavin was a popular award winning actor, with a huge fanbase. I sighed in relief when I noticed my face wasn't visible in the picture, just my side profile, which was fine by me. The comments under the post made me chuckle. [What would it take to meet such a damsel!?] [Her side profile, La Hot!] My eyes narrowed as I caught sight of a familiar handle: JakeCarter. His comment read: [Mind if we link up, beauty?] My frown deepened. Wasn't it ironic? The same person, who had often taunted me whenever he came over with Asher, was now requesting a meet-up. Jake Carter was Asher's best and only friend. Like Natasha, Jake had always thought that I was unworthy of marrying his friend. Truly, a person's status defines them! "Lewis, have you found a date to go with for the business function?" Dad asked suddenly. "Not yet," Lewis muttered, his voice barely audible, as he chewed his food. Cory let out a chuckle that soon turned into laughter. The fact that he was laughing by himself left us puzzled. "I expected that response from you bro! You're always so busy with work, I'm starting to think that you're allergic to dating," Cory teased Lewis. "I wouldn't be surprised if you turn out to be a gay," he added, causing a chuckle to escape my lips. Truthfully speaking, Lewis had never seemed interested in any lady, always focused and expressionless.... well, except around me. "I'll go with you, big bro," I offered with a reassuring smile. "What time is it? What's the business function about?" I asked. "It's in thirty minutes," he replied. "It's not really about business; it's more like a soirée among elites to meet new investors, strengthen bonds, and socialize. Each individual must come with a date," he explained. I mouthed an ‘Oh’ to show understanding. *** SKYLINE LOUNGE. I inhaled deeply, trying to calm my nerves. It had been a while since I attended a formal event like this. Asher never took me to one, even those with compulsory dates, he would rather take his secretary, Chloe. Lewis's deep voice pierced through my thoughts, "Nervous?" I forced a smile, trying to mask my true feelings. As the Lamborghini came to a stop on the red carpet, camera flashes illuminated the scene. Lewis stepped out, looking dashing in his white suit. He opened the door for me and extended his arm, which I took without hesitation. [It's Lewis Briggs!] [Who is the lady with him?] [I thought he wouldn't bring a date, this is shocking!] Whispers and comments came from different angles as we walked down the red carpet toward the hall where the soirée was holding. All eyes were on us as we made our entrance. Turning to me with a smile, Lewis commented, "You look calmer than I expected, like you were born for gatherings like this." I smiled back at his compliment. Was I really fit to be in this cycle? Just then, Lewis's phone rang and he stepped away to answer it. I stood there, waiting for him, when I heard a familiar voice behind me. "It's bad luck running into you here," Chloe said with a sneer.
