Arriving at my new home went differently than I expected. Adrian didn’t speak the entire way until we arrived at his pack land. I had many questions. I wanted to talk about lots of things, but for some reason the tense mood in the car restricted me. It literally made me feel like speaking to him would make him more angry than he already was.
‘Do you think this is right?’ I asked Leia. During the past year I grew closer to my wolf and we became like sisters. It wasn’t because we shared a body and mind, but simply because we understood each other and shared a lot of interests.
‘I hope not. His wolf is silent as well. This is really strange,’ she replied. Shortly after my fifteen birthday when she showed herself I found myself speaking to her about everything. Almost every decision I was about to make, I discussed openly with her.
‘I am afraid to talk to him,’ I admitted to her.
‘I am hiding inside your head, but I still can feel the tension and vibes that come from him. I would be afraid too and you know I am a brave wolf.’ The way she said that made me smile, but she was right. Leia was a beta wolf which meant she was naturally brave, projecting her own bravery onto me but right now, in this situation, we couldn’t benefit from this characteristic of hers.
The route was long. We spent around five hours in the car before we arrived at his pack and he stayed quiet the entire time. Being silent wasn’t something I couldn’t handle, what did bother me was that since we left the office of Alpha Barkley from my old pack, Adrian didn’t even look at me. He waited in the car for me until I packed my stuff. I wasn’t forbidden to take all of them, but he told me that I just needed to take some of my clothes and things I wanted to remind me of home but other than that I didn’t need anything else.
When I finished packing, my people put my bags in his car and after I said goodbye to my mom, who was crying like a baby, we didn’t say a word to each other. He didn’t even spare me a single look.
The gate in front of us blocked the route to his pack territory. It opened and once the car drove in and the gate closed, it made me feel strange. He stopped the car in front of a huge building, which I assumed was the pack house. It was double the size of the one we had back in my old pack.
“Alpha.” I noticed a red-haired guy standing in front of the building, bowing to Adrian as soon as he got out of the car.
“Arrange her room and get some omegas to move her luggage there. Put her on the same floor as me. Also make sure to assign one of the girls to her to make sure she is given everything she wants.” That was it? He was going to treat me like a VIP guest in his pack, giving me everything I needed for a comfortable life? That didn’t seem so good to me. I was hoping to maybe speak to him and I don’t know, something.
“Understood Alpha.” The red hair guy scanned me from head to toe, probably looking a bit longer than Adrian liked. Animalistic growls came from his throat and before I knew it he was right in front of the guy, holding him by his neck and lifting him off of the ground until his legs were just hanging in the air.
“Don’t you dare look at her like that again,” Adrian growled through gritted teeth.
“I am sorry Alpha. I didn’t recognize our Luna,” the guy tried to apologize but since the air in his lungs was limited and no new air could get in, his voice came out squeaky. Adrian dropped him on the ground and the guy tried to gather himself as fast as possible, quickly getting back on his feet.
I just stood there, next to the car, not really sure what to do. Should I follow Adrian inside? I kept standing there and Adrian stopped at the door to the building giving me a look. I understood then I needed to follow him. I didn’t hesitate even for a brief moment and quickly ran after him.
“Once you prepare everything, pick her up from my office,” he said to the red-haired guy as he slowly entered the building. As I passed the guy, he looked at me apologetically which made me nervous. Shouldn’t I be the one apologizing to him? I just showed up out of the blue and the moment we met he was choked because of me, but he was giving me a silent apology instead.
I followed Adrian to his office. The building looked old. Not the kind of old where everything needed to be fixed, but the kind that made you feel history all around you. The entire place had its own story which, hopefully, I was about to learn.
The style of his office didn’t fit with the building. Everything inside was cream, modern and new and compared to the style of the building it was like a slap in the face. Adrian went behind the desk and sat in his chair immediately starting to deal with some paperwork. I just stood there, in the middle of his office looking at him.
I cleared my throat hoping to get his attention, but he didn’t even lift his eyes to look at me.
“Adrian, why am I even here?” I asked. My question might have been a little stupid and out of place, but given the way he treated me I simply didn’t fit there. He didn’t seem to have any intention of talking to me or even looking at me so why did he bring me with him?
“Alpha,” he replied with one word and I didn’t understand what he meant.
“Excuse me?” I asked him.
“It’s Alpha Adrian. Not Adrian,” he explained in a stern voice. His eyes still fixed on the papers in front of him.
Those words hurt. I was supposed to be his Luna, not the one addressing him by his title, but for now I tried to bite my tongue and follow his words.
“I am sorry Alpha Adrian. Why did you bring me here? You don’t seem to be very interested in me,” I asked. His expression showed a little irritation and finally he lifted his eyes and looked deeply into mine.
“I brought you here because you are my mate. You are here because you are Luna of this pack. I hope that will clear your questions for now. Now if you will excuse me I have a lot of work to do since I had to go pick you up myself. Sit and wait until Emmet comes to pick you up.” That was the longest speech he had given since we left my ld Alpha’s office. I disliked the tone he used with me and also the explanation he gave me. I might be his mate and Luna of this pack, but he didn’t have to take me with him if he wasn’t interested in me. Something inside of me still hoped that he was just trying to act tough or maybe he just still thought I was too young to have a relationship with him since the age gap between us was nine years.
He liked me. At least that’s what I thought when I saw his smile back then during my shift. He liked what he saw when he came to pick me up after a year and saw me for the third time, standing in front of him in the Alpha’s office just a few hours ago but now, he seemed to be so cold and distant. Maybe he had his own reasons for that which I still didn’t fully understand.
After his last words I didn’t feel like talking to him again. I just sat on the sofa and waited for Emmett to come pick me up. I thought Emmett would be the red-haired guy from outside who was choked by Adrian because of me.
‘I want to go home.’ I whined in my mind to Leia. I could feel her compassion for me, but since she still hoped for her mate to talk to her as well she couldn’t share the wish with me. I didn’t blame her. Deep inside I thought that my relationship would also improve. I still refused to give up on my dream of having a perfect mate who would care for me and love me. Well, I couldn’t say Adrian didn’t care, he just seemed not to love me despite the mate bond. I had felt it so he must have as well. Mating shouldn’t be something so easily ignored, but for him it seemed it was easy.
There was a weak knock at the door.
“Come in,” Adrian’s strong voice sounded in the room. The door opened and the red-haired guy peeked inside, this time with a smile on his face.
“The room is ready, Alpha and Luna's luggage has already been moved in,” he reported winking at me but making sure to avoid any direct eye contact or staring at me for too long.
“Good. You can take her there. It has been a long day, also today is her birthday. Make sure to prepare a small welcome party with a birthday cake.” That was actually nice of him. I didn’t expect a celebration at all, but it seemed that I was not only having a welcome party but even a birthday cake which sounded pretty cool. My eyes widened in happiness. Adrian didn’t even look at me, but this time I didn’t care. I almost jumped up from the sofa and went to the door.
“Happy birthday Luna,” Emmett wished me and I smiled. He was still cautious to avoid eye contact for too long, but I started to feel like we could be friends.
“Thank you,” I told both of them for a party and for the wish.
“You are welcome,” Emmett replied, but Adrian only waved his hand like it wasn’t worthy of any words.
“This way Luna,” Emmett made space for me and I walked past him. He closed the door to Adrian’s office and led me towards the stairs and up to where my new room was supposed to be.
“Is he always like this?” I asked as we were walking. Emmett looked like he didn’t understand the question.
“Who?” he asked which sounded kind of stupid.
“Your Alpha. Is he always so cold and distant?” I clarified.
“Well, it depends, I guess. His parents died when he was really young and as soon as his wolf emerged he had to take over the pack and become Alpha. I guess life was hard on him and this was a reaction to protect himself.” I wasn’t sure if he tried to apologize for him or give me some excuse as to why his Alpha was such a cold person, but losing both parents must have been hard. I lost my own father when I was fourteen, but still had my mom. He lost both of them before getting a wolf and as far as I knew Alpha’s wolves came earlier than others. He got his wolf around fourteen so his parents must have died before that.
“I understand,” I replied but I didn’t really understand. Emmett seemed to be the kind of cheerful guy who would usually bring happiness and joy to your life and despite the first choking scene which was probably only because of the Alpha jealousy, they seemed to have a good and friendly relationship as well.
“Alright. Welcome to your new home Luna. I hope you will like it here,” Emmett told me before opening the door to my new room. It was huge and I saw the door to my personal bathroom as well. I went in.
“Thank you,” I told him before he closed the door and I was left alone in my new home, in a completely foreign place with people I didn’t know. I missed my mom.
