Just as Katie and Nate walked out of the café, Katie's phone rang. It was her mother. Katie hesitated. Could it be about the news? Has she seen it? Katie worried.
"Hello, Mum."
Silence.
Katie knitted her brows. "Mum?"
"Katie, I need to know the truth. What have you been up to lately?" Sue asked.
"I...err...I've got a job at The Anderson Corporation and I'm a jewelry designer now."
"Tell me, have you done anything indiscreet with Nate Anderson? Katie, your father and I never expected you to be rich or famous, but we do hope you live an honest life, with dignity."
Katie could hear the anger in her mother's tone. Tears filled her eyes. She wanted to explain but then she realized that there was nothing she could say for what her mother said was true.
