I led my companions through the tents and the short stretch of forest to the open plains. Night still held a tight grip on the hour and clouds had come to partially block the twinkling lights above us. Silence reigned beneath the canopy as the night sky cast shadows all around us. The hairs on the back of my head stood on end the closer we came to the columns of stone. We approached the ancient stone circle as it was covered in deep shadows.
Caius grabbed my shoulder and stopped me. I looked up to see him staring hard at one of the columns. “Someone’s there.”
The man in black stepped out of the shadows. His bright blue eyes stared unblinkingly at each of us until they settled on me. “I wished for you to come alone.”
