Either she had forgotten the train was higher than the trains in America or else she slipped. Anyway, she fell and gave a shrill cry as she did so. Vada started to her feet and, going to the door of the carriage, saw Nancy Sparling lying on the platform. Her handbag which had burst open as she fell had scattered its contents all around her. “Are you – hurt?” Vada asked in dismay. She jumped down beside Nancy Sparling and realised for the moment that she was almost incapable of speech. “It’s my leg,” she said after a while. “I’m sure I have broken it!” “Oh, no! You cannot have done!” Vada exclaimed. Officials, porters and onlookers appeared as if by magic. Nancy Sparling in great pain was carried to the waiting room.
