Dragons are not born as dragons from dragonesses. They are born to women in human form and age as children do, but their minds, ah, their minds develop much faster, taking in languages and other subjects at a fascinating rate. A child of four or five might have the knowledge and vocabulary of an eight-year-old. But the shifting of man or woman to dragon form comes later, around adolescence. Until then, the dragon is alive only inside the child’s mind, but it has been described to me as a living thing, one that some shifters can picture clearly in their minds.
