Chapter One
Ethan was sitting in his living room, which was dimly lit. The light from his laptop cast a soft glow on his tired face. He had had a long day at work and still had emails to answer and reports to review. However, he noticed that it was almost time for Lily to return home from her friend's house, and he wanted to be there to welcome her warmly.
The passing of his beloved wife, Sarah, had deeply affected them both. It has been two years since her departure, which left Ethan to single-handedly raise their daughter, Lily. Despite his immense love for her, there were instances where the burden of his duties seemed daunting. Nevertheless, he cherishes his role as a father and is committed to ensuring a fulfilling life for Lily, assuming the responsibilities of both a mother and a father.
?️ ETHAN....
While observing Lily's cheerful play with her toys, I couldn't help but sense a certain emptiness within myself. The affection and companionship that I once shared with Sarah were truly unforgettable, but I yearn for a meaningful connection and a partner who can bridge that gap. Regrettably, given my work and the responsibility of raising Lily, attaining love seems like a far-fetched dream.
I stood up and made my way to the kitchen, being mindful of the quietness of the house. I opened the refrigerator, hoping to quickly find something easy to cook for dinner. While looking at the contents, my thoughts drifted to the possibility of finding love once more. It has been quite a while since I last experienced the comfort of a warm embrace or the gentle touch of a hand. However, I am aware that dating as a single father would present unique difficulties.
As I was deep in thought, the ringing of my phone caught me off guard. Hastily, I dried my hands with a dish towel and picked up the call. On the other end was Mark, my lifelong friend and trusted ally.
"Hey, man! How's it going?" Mark's cheery voice echoed in my ears.
I smiled. "Hey Mark. I'm here right now trying to figure out dinner."
Mark politely suggested, with a chuckle, that there might be an easier way to handle the situation, which is by getting takeout.
I laughed. Mark always knew how to lighten the mood. "Yeah, maybe I'll give it a try tonight. What about you? How's your side?"
As Mark recounted his own experiences and misfortunes, I couldn't help but feel a slight sense of longing. While I treasured the moments spent with Lily, there were instances where I yearned for a partner, someone to share life's highs and lows with. However, considering my obligations and the scarce amount of time I have outside of work and parenting, finding love seemed like a daunting challenge.
Just as I was about to hang up, Mark's voice was mischievous. "Hey, you know what they say, right? Love has a funny way of finding you when you least expect it."
I rolled my eyes. “Please, spare me the cliches.”
Mark chuckled. “I'm serious, Ethan. You never know what life has in store for you. Just be open-minded."
I understand your concern, Mark. However, at the moment, my top priority is taking care of Lily and ensuring that all her needs are met. I will try my best to assist you as well.
Mark understood. “I understand, buddy. You are a wonderful dad and Lily is lucky to have you. But don't forget your own happiness, okay?
Mark couldn't see me, but I nodded. "I will never forget you. Thank you, Mark."
As I concluded the call, I found myself pondering whether Mark's words held any truth. Is it possible for love to enter my life, despite my busy schedule as a single father? Or is it merely a hopeful notion? Nonetheless, setting aside these thoughts, I redirected my focus towards my current responsibility: preparing dinner for my daughter Lily.
I was unaware that only a few blocks away, there was a young woman named Emma who was also yearning for love. Emma had always prioritized her career and education, causing her to neglect her love life. As she sat alone in her modest apartment, surrounded by her academic materials, she felt a deep sense of emptiness in her heart.
Emma had always had a soft spot for romance, and had hoped to find a genuine connection with someone. She didn't find the idea of dating apps and casual encounters appealing, as she sought a deeper and more enduring love. However, as a shy and inexperienced woman, finding such a love appeared to be a challenging task.
While gazing out of her apartment window and fixating on the moon suspended in the night sky, Emma couldn't help but feel that life had more to offer than what she had encountered thus far. She longed for a romantic tale of her own, one that would enchant her and make her believe in the enchantment of love.
The following day, by chance, it seemed that our paths were going to intersect. After a tiring day at work, I had made the decision to bring Lily to the park for some outdoor activities and bonding time. It was a tradition that we had developed to appreciate each other's company and make new experiences.
In the meantime, Emma, who was feeling a bit overwhelmed by her studies, made the decision to take a brief respite and take a peaceful walk in the nearby park. While strolling along the curving paths, the sound of children's laughter and the happy barks of dogs permeated the atmosphere, providing a pleasant diversion from her demanding agenda.
I gently pushed Lily on the swings and enjoyed hearing her infectious laughter. As I looked around, I briefly met Emma's gaze and noticed a hint of vulnerability and curiosity in her eyes. I found myself inexplicably drawn to her, as if we shared a silent bond.
Emma observed me and Lily, and she was touched by our playful interaction. She admired how I embraced my role as a father, and it was evident that I loved Lily very much. This gave her a sense of optimism. Could this be the beginning of something wonderful?
Our eyes met once more, and this time we held the gaze for a moment longer. Summoning my courage, I offered a friendly smile to Emma, who graciously returned it, her cheeks blushing ever so slightly.
The moment was modest, yet it seemed to hint at something greater, a possibility of a romance waiting to blossom.
As I approached Lily who was playing in the sandbox, I couldn't resist taking another look at Emma. I wondered if I should introduce myself, but I was unsure if she was already in a relationship or not. I had some doubts and worries, but I knew I needed to take a risk.
Lily's enthusiastic voice broke the silence before I could make a move. "Dad, look! I made a sandcastle!"
I shifted my focus to Lily and admired her impressive creation. However, when I glanced back to where Emma had been, she had disappeared. Although it was disappointing, I didn't want to dwell on it. It could have been a brief encounter that was not meant to last.
