RUBY'S POV.
I returned to my chambers, where I lived with the other three girls, all waiting to be selected as Charles’s breeder and wife to the Alpha one day. I let out a long sigh before falling onto the bed.
“Ruby, what happened to your hand?” Zoey asked in shock. I turned to look at my hand and saw a small bruise on my arm. I hadn't noticed it until she mentioned it. I guess one of the glass particles must have cut my skin when it scattered.
“How did you get that bruise?” Zoey asked again, more out of curiosity than concern.
“I must have gotten the bruise when I fell on the floor a few minutes ago,” I answered.
“Oh, Ruby, the most important role of being a future breeder and new Luna of our great Alpha is to be careful with our appearance. No Alpha will want a woman who has a lot of scars on her body,” Alexa chipped in, shaking her head pitifully.
I tried not to roll my eyes. “It will be gone in a couple of minutes. It’s not such a big deal.”
Alexa gasped, placing her hand on her chest dramatically. “It’s a big deal, Ruby. Alpha Charles deserves only the best, and we must look our best. You know how many girls would kill to be in our spot right now?”
“Charles is powerful and the most beautiful Alpha I have ever seen,” Zoey added. “Any of us chosen to be his woman would be very lucky.”
“Why hasn’t he come to see us, though?” Genesis asked.
“Maybe he is busy,” Alexa said.
“It has almost been a week since we last saw him. He should be getting to know us, not keeping us in this old bed in our chambers,” Genesis said.
“Maybe we should speak to our Luna. Maybe she would tell us what’s going on,” Zoey suggested.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” I said. “She might not appreciate us bothering her with this.”
“Still, we deserve to know,” Genesis insisted. “We are here for a reason, after all.”
Just then, the door to our chambers opened, and Charles' mom walked in with a smile. “Ladies, I have some good news,” she announced.
We fell silent, eager to hear what she had to say.
“Charles will be coming over for dinner tonight,” Charle’s mom informed us. “I want you all to put on your best outfits. If you need anything, you can come to me.”
The room buzzed with excitement.
“Finally!” Zoey exclaimed. “I was starting to think he would forget about us.”
“This is our chance to impress him,” Alexa said, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “We need to make sure we look perfect.”
“Thank you, Luna,” We said, grateful for the opportunity. “We will make sure we’re ready.”
Charles’ mother nodded approvingly. “Good. I will see you all at dinner. Remember, this is an important night.”
When Charles' mother left the room, Zoey clapped her hands.
“Alright, ladies, let’s get to work. We have a lot to do and not much time,” she said.
The girls started rummaging through their closets, asking each other which dresses suited them best and what jewelry to wear. Amidst the flurry of activity, Genesis noticed that I was not doing any of it.
“Ruby, why aren’t you dressing up?” Genesis asked, looking puzzled.
I said nothing, not wanting to explain the real reason. The necklace I wore had a spell to stop my mating bond with Charles, making me look ugly in his eyes. No matter what I did, he would not care about me or find me attractive.
Alexa hissed and rolled her eyes. “Just ignore her. She thinks she is better than the rest of us. Maybe it’s her tactic to get noticed by Charles.”
“That’s not true,” I protested quietly. “I just don’t think it’s all about appearances.”
“Appearances matter, Ruby,” Alexa snapped. “Especially when it comes to impressing someone like Charles. You might want to rethink your strategy unless you want to be overlooked.”
Genesis put a hand on Alexa’s arm, trying to calm her down. “Everyone has their own way of preparing. Let’s focus on ourselves and do our best.”
Zoey nodded. “Yeah, let’s just make sure we all look great tonight. We need to support each other, not tear each other down.”
*********
We made our way to the dining hall, which was beautifully decorated. The long table was set with fine china and silverware, and various delicious foods were spread out, filling the air with mouth watering aromas. Candles flickered, casting a warm glow over the room. Luna Margot stood by the head of the table, smiling warmly.
“Please, take your seats, ladies,” she said. “Charles will be here soon. He’s probably just running a bit late.”
We nodded and found our places at the table. As we settled in, the atmosphere was a mix of excitement and nervousness. I glanced around, noting how everyone was trying to look their best.
Sitting next to me, Alexa gushed, “Luna, you look absolutely stunning. How do you manage to stay so beautiful and ageless?”
Charles’ mother chuckled softly, clearly pleased by the compliment. “Thank you, Alexa. It’s all about caring for oneself and embracing the strength within.”
Zoey leaned in, whispering to me, “Do you think he will like what I’m wearing?”
“You look great, Zoey,” I replied, trying to be supportive even though I did not care.
Genesis fiddled with her napkin nervously. “I just hope he is not disappointed.”
Charles’ mother smiled reassuringly at us. “Charles is looking forward to this dinner. Just be yourselves, and everything will be fine.”
Just then, the doors to the dining hall swung open with a grand flourish, and Charles entered, radiating authority and charisma. He was dressed impeccably, his presence commanding the room instantly.
The girls fell silent, their eyes widening with admiration and awe. Even though I knew he would not see me as anything but plain, my heart still skipped a beat.
“Good evening, ladies,” Charles greeted us with a deep, resonant voice. “I apologize for being late.”
“Good evening, Alpha Charles,” we replied in unison, trying to sound composed.
