Mato's POV
I woke up the next morning realizing I did indeed have a mate. I was filled with happiness to the point it cracked a smile on my face. I don't remember the last time I woke up smiling. I got up, new ideas to get Wesley and Kerry on my side. Hoping it would be a way to help them understand that the mate bond was a sacred and beautiful thing.
"They are gone." Momma Dee said handing me my coffee when I walked into the dining hall for breakfast.
"What?" I was not expecting them to be gone. "Kayla too?" I growled.
"No," Momma Dee said. Kayla slept with her friends in the movie house. They did not take her. Just Wesley and Kerry and their youngest are gone." Momma Dee settled down with her coffee.
The kitchen members started placing the buffet out, while Cookie (Amber had dubbed him and it stuck) handed us plates full of scrambled eggs, biscuits, bacon, sausage, and gravy. There were a fruit, pancakes, and other bits with various juices on the tables. They were also placing pastries out on each table for people to grab.
"It seems I will have to pick a new Beta." I groan. Wesley had been my Beta for the last 25 years.
"Yep seems that way." Momma Dee sipped her coffee as she watched Logan with his mate Tiffany and Ace with Tatianna come into the dining hall.
I looked up to nod to both of them. I would have to hold Beta trails again and see who came out on top. It was the best way to go about it in my opinion. Those who wanted to try could. Of those, I would pick the strongest wolf or bear. I had had several of each of the times I have been Alpha. "I will hold the Beta trials again," I spoke out loud more to myself than anyone.
"I will let everyone know." Momma Dee dug into her breakfast. "Do you want me to have Kayla help?" She glanced up chewing.
"Yes, I think that will be a good way for her to get used to her new duties." I too, used my fork like I was starving. Cookie was one of the best cooks we had had at Bear Moon. He always came up with new foods and kept the rotation always surprising. He was one of the best head cooks we hAd had in a long while.
I could see people trickling in. I would wait until I could confirm that Wesley and Kerry were indeed gone then announce the Beta contest. I would do it at dinner when Momma Dee had time to let me know how long it would be to get something together
I finished my breakfast, heading to my office to get started on my day. I check out the paperwork to see nothing was huge that needed my attention. Heading out the back I went down the path that lead to Wesley and Kerry's home to see that it was cleared of clothes and important documents. They planned on not coming back. I would cancel their credit cards to my pack and the debit card be kept.
Back at the office I made those calls and found out they were on a flight to Russia. So they were headed to the pack that would be who they hAd planned to marry Kayla to. Perhaps they would try to swap out and marry their youngest to one of those bears. Even though she was a wolf she had bear genetics that could give birth to more bears. Hence why so many supernatural kids were taken and sold. Genetics was a big thing to us. powerful offspring was key to the survival of packs and people.
"We should have things together in a couple of days." Momma Dee spoke from my open office door.
"Perfect I will make the announcement this evening at dinner." I didn't even lift my head as I was checking the screen to see what Wesley and Kerry had bought before they left. Three plane tickets, first-class too. They had a rent a car and a few other bits looking to be food and some warm clothes.
I would need to put a call in with my father and see if he could contact that pack. At least so I could keep tabs on where they went and who they were chatting with. Maybe even the name of the man Kayla was supposed to marry. Knowing information like that is half the battle. I was kicking myself for not paying more attention to what Wesley and Kerry had been doing with this whole arrangement.
"Would you like me to bring your lunch in here?" It was Kayla's voice that broke me from staring at the computer screen.
"Yes please." I felt that stupid grin spread across my face at the sight of her. I knew I had to take this slow. She was way younger than me and didn't have the experience in life that I did.
"Anything special?" She grinned, "you want me to add to the plate?"
"Another cup of coffee would be great." The grin I had just wouldn't go away. It was stuck there.
"Ok, I will be back with your lunch and coffee." She paused before she left. "I am sorry about my parents." She hung her head, looking at the floor.
"Not your fault," I got up and walked to her. placing a hand on her shoulder those delightful sparks tingling my hand. "Why don't I go with you and you can have lunch with me in the office?" I was hoping she would say yes.
Her blue eyes popped up and she had a sudden grin on her face too. " I would like that very much." I was a puddle of goo for those blue eyes.
I fell in step behind her as we headed to the main dining hall to fill plates and grab another coffee. Mornings like this coffee was vital. It was a band-aide for a dramatic turn of events.
