Anna groaned and slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurred, and she felt like she had been drugged. She felt cold, hard rock against her skin, her wrists were handcuffed with large metal bracelets, and hooked to the wall by a thick heavy metal, three-foot chain.
Immediately, she sat up and saw her clothes were ripped and tattered, stained with blood and dirt, her hair was a messy braid, and her flyways stuck to her face. Annoyed, she reached up and pushed the sweaty hair away from her face.
As she brought her hands up, the jagged edge of the cuff cut into her wrist, and she cried out in pain. She looked around and saw she was in a cell with three stone walls, and a heavy-looking steel door that had a window and a slot built into it.
What happened? Where am I?
She panted nervously as she looked around, swallowed hard, and saw a window built into the far wall with bars through it. She pushed herself to her feet, stumbled to the window, and the sunlight hit her skin. Immediately, her dizziness went away, and she felt a tingling sensation in her knee and wrist.
Anna looked down at her wrist and saw the cut heal with a shine of gold light. She looked at her knee and saw a blood stain where a gash used to be. She stared momentarily and thought maybe she was hit in the head.
She shook her thoughts away, looked at the door, walked toward it, and studied it. She wondered how she was going to get herself out of this one.
“Is she awake? Boss wants to know,” she heard voices coming from somewhere in the building.
She pressed her back against the wall and stood still, hoping they weren’t coming into her cell.
“No, not yet. I just checked on her.”
“Alright. Call me if she does wake up.”
She listened a little longer, but there was only silence, and then heard a car start. She walked to the window and watched a black car drive down a driveway and turn out onto the street. That was her way out, once she figured out how she was going to get out of the cuffs, and out of that cell. She looked around and got lost in her thoughts.
How did she get there? Where was she? She looked down at the cuffs and noticed a stamp. That was the symbol the Mavericks used. A circle with a bold ‘M’ stamped in the middle. Anger boiled inside her and a growl rumbled in her chest. She was going to make him pay.
Anna yanked on the chains out of anger and the brackets came flying at her. Quickly, she dodged out of the way and found herself on the other side of the room. She looked around with wide eyes and breathed heavily.
How did she get there so fast?
“Hello?” called a girl’s voice.
She didn’t know what they did to her, but she knew that she was going to get out of there.
“Hello?” called the voice again.
Anna looked at the door, ignoring the girl’s voice, stepped into the sunlight, and looked at the cuffs. She slammed her wrists against the rock wall with all of her strength, and the cuffs broke off her wrists.
She rubbed her sore raw and bruised wrists and blew a long breath. She felt the tingling sensation on her wrists, and they didn’t hurt anymore. The bruises and marks were still there, but the pain was gone, and she rubbed them, looking at the door.
Anna walked up to it and spun as she brought her leg up and kicked the door hard. It groaned as the door’s hinges weakened, and she spun and kicked it again.
That time, the hinges broke and the door came crashing down to the floor. Someone must have heard that. She thought and listened, but there was only silence. She thought that was weird, and dismissed her thoughts.
Slowly, she inched her way out of the cell and saw fingers from the bottom of the cell next to her.
“Hello?” called the girl again, and Anna walked over to the steel door.
“What is your name?” whispered Anna.
“Megan,” the girl whispered back.
“How old are you, Megan?” asked Anna, keeping her head on a swivel.
By the sound of the girl’s voice, she sounded like she was young.
“Sixteen.”
Anna sighed and realized Megan must have been another missing kid from Glee. Her eyebrows shot down in anger, she looked at the steel door, kicked it hard, and the door groaned.
She had to remember she was strongest when she was angry and made a mental note.
“Stand back,” she called to the girl.
She waited a few moments and then thought of Leonard. Her anger began to boil, and she threw herself at the door. It came crashing inward and fell to the ground with Anna on top of it.
“Are you okay?” asked Megan as she looked at Anna in amazement.
Anna stood up and shook her arm.
“Yeah,” she said with a breath.
She looked and saw the sunlight shining through the window, walked over to it, and the sunlight hit her skin. She couldn’t get over the amazing feeling the sun gave her, and she giggled.
Megan looked at her oddly and gave her an unsure smile.
“What’s so funny?”
Anna looked at her and saw the sunlight didn’t affect the girl. Maybe not everyone had the same side effects as she did, so she decided to keep her abilities to herself until she could figure them out.
She looked out the window and at Megan.
“We are going to get out of here now,” said Anna confidently, and Megan nodded nervously.
They carefully inched their way down the hall and saw the front door. There was no one in sight, so they made a run for it. Anna heard a TV on from somewhere, but she didn’t stop. They ran out the door, crept towards the car, and got in.
Anna pulled the visor down and the keys hit her lap. She shot a knowing look at Megan, started the car, and sped off down the road. She saw a man come out of the building in the side mirror, and she gave the girl a set look.
“Whatever you do, stay on the floor,” she said, noticing two black cars started following them.
Where did they come from?
She knew she had to get rid of them and get them back to the city.
“Hang on,” she yelled as she slammed on the brakes, turning the car sideways.
Megan opened the glove box, and Anna smiled, seeing a knife and a handgun. She pulled the gun out and checked the clip. She glanced at Megan, and the girl crawled on the floorboard.
Anna got out of the car, shot the vehicles racing toward them, and shot both guys in the head in the first car. The second car stopped, and two men got out.
“We aren’t going to hurt you two,” one said and pointed a gun at her.
“But we will if we have to!” said the other guy gruffly and shot her.
Her shoulder jolted back as the bullet penetrated her skin, and she yelled out in pain as she looked at her shoulder. The wound began tingling, and she sneered, looking at the men.
She snickered, and they looked at each other.
“What the hell are you?”
Anna smirked, ran at them full force, and punched one of them in the head. His head turned with a sickening c***k, and he fell lifelessly on the ground. She looked at the other guy and ran at him. He shot his gun toward her, and she jumped out of the way.
The gunshot hit the car on the front passenger side and she gasped. She looked at him angrily and hit him in the chest. The man gasped for air, bent over, and put his hand on his chest.
“That’s for killing the girl,” she growled.
She raised her elbow in the air and hit him on the top of the head. The man fell lifelessly to the ground, and she ran toward the car.
She felt a weird sensation in the back of her arm, and she itched it. Surprisingly, she felt a lump as she pulled the skin at the back of her arm and brought it forward. Anna could see a small hole in the top of the lump. It was hard, like a piece of metal. She looked at Megan who was sprawled out on the back seat, and she was alive.
“Hand me the knife,” said Anna, and Megan handed her the blade.
She sliced open the back of her arm, cried out in pain as she pulled a little device out of her arm, and looked at it closely. It was a tracking device the size of a capsule. Angrily, she threw it on the ground and stomped on it. She scowled, got in the car, and headed towards the city.
**********
Anna stopped at a little gas station on the way, and she and Megan got out of the car and went inside. A man was behind the counter, and he looked at them wide-eyed.
“Charton?” she asked.
The man nodded and pointed to the highway.
“About sixty miles, miss,” he said, and she smiled, nodding.
“Thank you, listen, we don’t have any money. Could we get something to drink?”
The man smiled at her, as he reached into his wallet and handed her a twenty.
“Go ahead, get something to drink and eat. Are you two okay?” he asked as he looked at her and Megan with concern, and Anna sighed.
“Yes, we’re okay. I’m a police officer for Glee County. Do you have a phone?”
He nodded and handed her the store phone.
“Glee County Sheriff’s Office.”
Her heart stopped. It was Paul, and his voice was music to her ears.
“Paul?” she said as her voice cracked.
“Anna? Is that you?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she huffed a sob.
“Yes, and I have a girl named Megan with me. I am heading to Charton.”
“Anna. Oh my god, you’re alive?”
Anna smiled through her tears and nodded.
“Yes, see you soon,” she said and hung up the phone.
“Thank you,” she said, handing back the phone, and the man nodded.
Anna and Megan bought some drinks and snacks and headed out to the car. They got in and headed to the city, glad to be away from that dungeon they were keeping them in.
