Chapter 6

** Adrianne POV **

“I’m Gavin, by the way”

I quickly bow my head when I see his intense gaze after he mentions his name. What am I doing here with him?

We walked together since his bike can’t be used and I have no clue where we are right now.

I shudder when the wind hit my skin and makes me hug myself.

“Here”

Suddenly Gavin put his jacket on my shoulder and makes me look up to meet his beautiful black eyes.

“Thanks” I murmured shyly and make him chuckle.

“So, what are you doing in this neighborhood? Alone” He asked while we kept walking slowly.

Um.. What should I say?

“Don’t tell me the date isn’t working, so now you’re running away from him?” He quickly added with an amused face so I know he was just teasing me.

I chuckled and shrugged my shoulder “No, there is no date” I start and pause for a second before continuing when I see he wants me to keep talking. “Actually, I went to some meeting with my parents but decided to go since it was boring, so I jumped in to a taxi and told him to find somewhere fun. He dropped me outside some place with a bunch of man who started whistling when they saw me, so I left” I turn my gaze back to Gavin who looked tense and angry after he heard my story.

Why’s he mad?

Is he mad at me?

“Umm..” I try to speak but I lose my voice when I see his dangerous gaze on me. I stop walking when he does and he touches my shoulder.

“Are you okay? Did they harm you? Where are they?” He asked the questions quickly before cupping my face and I gasp when I realize how close I am to this man.

My heart beats faster because it’s the first time I’ve gotten this close to a man who I’ve only met twice and he looks worried.

I didn’t know that I was crying until he wipes my tears with his thumb.

“Why are you crying?” He asked softly while I quickly shook my head and looked down, embarrassed.

Why was he acting like he cared?

No one has ever showed that they care for me, not even my parents, even though I’ve done everything to make them notice me.

“Thanks” I whisper before raising my head and meeting his confused eyes.

“What?”

I smile before taking his hand from my cheek and holding it tight.

“No one has ever cared for me, Gavin” I tell him who widens his eyes after he hears my statement “So, thanks for showing that you care” I didn’t know what he was thinking in his head but we just stood there looking at each other for a minute before we both turned our heads when we hear someone shout.

“YO, GAVIN”

Beep.. Beep.. Beep..

Two cars stopped and made me quickly let go of Gavin hand which I was holding but shockingly, he puts his arm around my back to hold me still beside him.

“Don’t worry, it’s my friend” he whispered in my ear, almost like he saw my anxiety.

I blush before nodding slowly. When I feel his breath on my ear it makes me shudder and excited at the same time.

God, what’s happening to me?

Why is my heart beating so fast and what is this feeling?

“You’re late!” He shouted to his friends who look shocked when they notice me standing behind him.

“Ehm..” One of them went to talk while the other smirked when he saw me which made me more uncomfortable standing beside Gavin.

Ring.. Ring.. Ring..

Luckily my phone starts ringing so I quickly take it from my clutch bag.

I see Robert on the caller ID before I hit the answer button.

“Yes, Robert”

I feel Gavin hand tightening when he saw me speaking on my phone.

‘Where are you miss Adrianne? I was shocked when your father called and asked if we already arrived at home since your mother said she saw both of us jump into your car, which is why I called because I need to take you back right now before your parents know that you’re gone’ I chuckled when he finished shouting and take a deep breath to calm himself.

“Sorry Robert, long story” I said before turning my gaze and meeting Gavins eyes who looked intently on me. I blushed before I break our gaze. “Umm.. I guess you can pick me on… umm” s**t, where am I?

“beside the Bats”

I turn my gaze to Gavin who spoke before he nodded his head to the place behind him and I saw that indeed it did say Bats. huh, weird name, I thought but quickly snapped out of it.

“I’m at the Bats” I told Robert before adding “do you know where that is?”

‘How come you went that far? it’s dangerous because there’s a gang hanging around there’ He said while at the same time I can hear him starting up his car, I guess he’s already on his way.

“What gang?” I asked then hear the men around me laugh and make me look at them, confused at their reaction.

‘I’m on my way, don’t worry about it, okay?’ Robert’s voice snapped me back from the men around me and made me nod my head before stupidly realizing that he can’t see me.

“See you then” Were my last words before hanging up the phone and facing the three amused faces in front of me.

I stood there nervously not knowing what to say.

“Who’s Robert?” Gavin asked and broke the silence while his friends chuckled and murmured something that made him turn his angry gaze to them who quickly shut their mouths.

Weird.

Why were they afraid of him?

“Adrianne” Gavin voice called my name when I didn’t said something and lost on my mind.

“Sorry” I grinned but he seems still mad at me like I’m done something wrong “Um.. Robert is my driver” I told them who look taken aback and shock when they hear me.

Again, what’s wrong with what I said?

“Umm..” I try to speak even though I don’t know what is wrong with what I said before.

“You have a driver?” One of Gavin's friends asked and I nodded to answer him.

“Dude” the other friend tapped Gavin’s shoulder “You’ve got a rich chick?” He exclaimed while Gavin seemed to be studying me without saying anything.

We stood there looking at each other until I heard a familiar car sound which I knew to be Robert.

I turn my head to see him jogging in my direction.

“Hello, miss Adrianne” He said when he stopped and stood in front of me until he noticed the three men standing behind me. “Umm..Everything alright?” He asked with a cold gaze to them who returns it with the same dangerous gaze to him.

Quickly, I touch his hand and he looks down at me.

“They are my friends, Robert” I tell him who looks shocked.

“What?”

I nodded my head quickly to assure him before I wave my hand to the man behind me “This is Gavin and….” I pause before looking up to Gavin, asking for his friends names with my eyes. He just chuckled when he sees the unspoken question from my eyes.

“Robert” He says and makes Robert raise his head to meet his eyes “I’m Gavin, this is Paul and Leo” He told him and I know he’s also telling me his friends names.

Robert nodded “Good to see you all, but we need to go now” He puts his hand on my back and pulls me towards his car.

I follow him but turn my head and wave to my new friend who’s staring.

“Bye” I said shyly before locking my eyes on the handsome man who makes my heart warm with his concern before I give him my best smile.

He just nodded his head before putting his hands in his pockets.

Seeing him standing coolly like that reminds me of a model, but I know that even a model couldn’t beat him.

Gavin..

I couldn’t stop smiling on my way back home, I know that Robert noticed my happy face but he didn’t say anything.

I’m glad that a bad day ends with something good.

** Gavin POV  **

I watch her leaving with Robert, her f*ckin' driver.

Shock was the right words for how I feel right now.

I just know her name and age from Leo’s cousins, but other than that I have no idea who she is.

I never met her or even recognized her pretty face around here.

But then again, she has a driver which means she’s wealthy and I guess she’s with the rich people who live in the West.

So, why was she joining the farthest school from there which have people like me, Latinos, that the white people are afraid of?

“Why are you crying?” I remember asking her who quickly shook her head and looked down.

She looked vulnerable and despondent that fostered a sense of caring and want to erase the grief from her.

Why..

Why was she so sad?

“Thanks” She whispered and met my eyes. From her eyes I could see something deep hurting her, but I didn’t know what.

She was still young but acted so unlike her age.

What happened to her?

“No one has ever cared for me, Gavin. So, thanks for showing that you care”

What did she mean by that?

She has parents and a brother or sister, so why did she say that no one cares for her?

“Gav?”

I feel someone nudge me and make me turn my eyes to Leo and Paul before looking back to where she left.

I sighed and started moving to where I left my bike with my friends following behind me.

“Who is she?” Paul asked when we start pushing my bike to the car., I know Leo is also waiting for my answer.

I know they need to know about the woman I’ve taken out for a date of just a fling so they will look after her when she’s still with me and so that other members don’t touch her, but what is Adrianne to me?

Who is she to me?

“She..” I start but stop immediately when I remember the brown sad eyes which were covered in tears and how sad she looked at that time. She makes me want to become her protector who can give happiness..

But, she comes from a wealthy family since she had a driver, I reason..

It’s not possible a man like me could give that happiness to her.

No one has ever cared for me, Gavin.

She said that, so….

I turn my gaze to my friends beside me and tell them firmly the words that I had never said to anyone. This will change everything.

“I think she’s my girl, so no one better didn't touch her”

What the f*ck am I doing?!
