“She knew who I am,” Michael replied.
“What?” Joey was shocked.
“Well, she thinks I don’t know she knows who I am.” Michael smiled his crooked smile.
It sounded a bit of complicated. But Joey had been Michael’s assistant for years, he got it at once.
“So, Miss. Gage did all these on purpose?” Joey asked. He was puzzled. “If she wanted to tell you her parents’ plan, there was no need to act so dramatically. Isn’t she afraid that you hate her?”
“That is her purpose.” Michael looked at Joey, “She doesn’t want to marry me. And she doesn’t want her parents take advantage of this marriage.”
“What?” Again, Joey was shocked.
This man was Michael Stone. Thousands of women wanted to marry him. And now there was one refused him and despised him? And that one was his future wife who seemed to be a horrible and flirty fortune hunter.
Joey thought this world must be crazy. He knew why Michael engaged with Beth.
Two months ago, Michael’s grandfather, was told by a medium that a girl was meant to be with Michael and that girl would help Michael in his career.
Later, with clues from the medium, they found the girl. And she was Beth Gage.
Even at this moment, Joey felt it was more like a movie plot. He wasn’t that kind of people believing in things like mediums. But Michael’s grandfather was. And that mattered.
Michael was always close to his grandfather. And he said yes to the engagement as his grandfather wanted.
Joey felt it wasn’t fair to Michael. And now, after what happened, he had a stronger feeling that this wouldn’t end well. It would be a disaster for such a woman marry to Michael. That would ruin his life!
“Mr. Stone, your grandfather always wants good things happen to you,” Joey hesitated and added, “as long as you tell him what happened today, I think he would forget the medium’s words and wouldn’t force you to marry Miss. Gage.”
“Who told you that I was forced?” asked Michael, looking very serious.
For the third time, Joey was shocked. So, Michael Stone was willing to marry Beth Gage?
What? Joey was totally puzzled. Joey always thought his boss was a perfect man. But now, maybe his boss had a special taste?
“Keep an eye on Beth’s parents.” Michael stepped forward and uttered. Exchanging Beth with her cousin? How dared them!
Joey nodded at once.
Beth didn’t stop until she was near the stairs. Seeing no one was after her, she was relieved.
“Beth?”
Beth turned around and saw Tony looked at her with a worried face.
She worked as a part-time bartender here, and Tony Wood was her mentor.
After knowing that Michael would come here today, Beth asked Tony to help her figure out where he was. And that was how she sneaked into Michael’s box.
Tony was like a big brother to her and was nice to her. Even though he shouldn’t tell Beth about Clients’ messages, he did that for her.
“How’s it going?” Tony asked.
“Maybe… uh… ends well?” Actually, Beth wasn’t sure.
She went to see Michael with two purposes, telling him what her parents planned to do and making him hate her so that their engagement could be ended.
She didn’t want to marry Michael Stone at all.
They had never met before. There was no foundation of the marriage. And her family situation was a mess. Moreover, Beth was still young. Maybe there were many women wanted to marry him, but she wasn’t one of them.
Though she didn’t think it was a nice thing to be the Prince Charming’s wife, she wouldn’t let her cousin, Lily Curtis, take advantage of it.
Thinking of her families, Beth felt sad and miserable.
Beth thought she had at least got one aim completed. But making Michael hate her? Thinking of her lying down under Michael, Beth blushed and felt unsure of that.
She didn’t understand. She wore dreadful make-up to be ugly, acted to be greedy and flirty, and showed no respect at all tonight. Every man would stay away from her.
But Michael Stone was an exception. He didn’t refuse her and claimed to have the best night with her. Was he crazy?
“That’s good,” Tony reminded her, “I won’t come tomorrow, remember to fill me in.”
Beth nodded and waved goodbye to Tony.
When she was walking downstairs, her phone rang. It was her grandfather’s call.
“Beth, can you come back tonight…”
“Grandpa, relax,” Beth interrupted, “I have said that you can make Lily be me, I would do nothing tomorrow.”
Well, today was today. As she said, she would do nothing tomorrow. What she did today didn’t count.
“I am not saying that.” Larry Gage, Beth’s grandfather, seemed to be awkward. He sighed, “I haven’t seen you for days. I miss you. Beth, don’t want to see me?”
Hearing him coughing, Beth felt sad.
Her grandfather was the only one in her family who treated her not that bad. Even though he said more than he acted, Beth was thankful to that.
“Grandpa, you don’t feel well?” Beth asked. She remembered when she saw him a few days ago, he was healthy and strong.
“I… just got a bit of cold. Nothing big.” Larry Gage cleared his throat and continued, “I prepared a gift for your eighteenth birthday. But I didn’t have the chance to give it to you that day. Come home tonight and take it. Do not tell your parents.”
“Okay, I will be there.” Beth added, “But it is because I worry you, not the gift.”
After the phone call, Beth took a deep breath.
This was her grandpa’s last chance. If he lied to her, then there was no one she needed to care in that house.
It was near 11 when Beth arrived. Looking at the villa she was familiar with, Beth clenched her fists.
She was the daughter of the Gages. Also, she was the most embarrassing existence in that family.
Tracy Morgan Gage, Beth’s mother, wasn’t her father’s first wife.
Vincent Gage, Beth’s father, cheated on his first wife after knowing she was too ill to carry a baby. But he was eager to create the next generation, and then he had Tracy, the home wrecker.
Not as they wished, Tracy had a daughter. But Vincent was so eager to have a son that he almost broke up with Tracy. After that, Tracy tried hard to make him come around. Later, she was pregnant again and gave birth to Beth’s brother, Henry Gage.
Soon, Vincent’s first wife died. And then Tracy moved into the villa and got married to Vincent.
Vincent was never a fair father. He only cared the boy, Henry. Beth was ignored. As for the mother, Tracy, she blamed Beth for the history that Vincent once broke up with her for having a daughter instead of a son. She hated Beth.
From the very beginning of her birth, Beth was not welcomed in this family. Sometimes, Beth thought it would be much better if she wasn’t their daughter. At least, she wouldn’t feel so sad.
Thinking of her past, Beth was upset. Her birth was a mistake to her parents. People always said that children were innocent. But she had never been treated nicely by the life.
