Chapter 7 Beth’s Show

1096 Words
Working in the bar, Beth had to protect herself. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have worn heavy make-up and looked like a ghost. She had thought to get another part-time job. But whenever she got a nice job, her families would force her employers to fire her. Beth knew they were trying to push her to the corner. But she would not give up. She hadn’t found any job until she went to the bar. The Gages thought it was a perfect place to make her more horrible and then Beth got the job. Beth was young and pretty. There was no doubt that she wanted to make herself look good just like other girls. But it was impossible now. Be patient… Beth shut her eyes and tool a deep breath. There were only two months left. After two months, she could get rid of her families’ control. Beth was calm when she opened her eyes. She looked at the mirror and started to put make-up on. Having prepared herself, Beth looked at the watch and then headed for the Grand Bar. She had to fill Tony, her mentor, in. She couldn’t be late. After knowing she went to the bar, Michael was also on his way with Joey. They sat in a corner. There were lots of people in the bar when they arrived. Men and women danced and screamed in the feebly lighted room. Joey couldn’t help frowning. “Mr. Stone, isn’t it a bad choice for Miss. Gage to work here?” Michael raised his head and threw Joey a cold look. Joey shut his mouth immediately and sat there in silence. Suddenly, the music stopped and the lights were turned off except for the spotlight. Following the place lightened by the spotlight, people looked at the stage. There was a long table with a row of glasses on it. The light shone brighter and a lady in good shape showed up on the stage. Wearing the silver mask and tight clothes, she stood there with several glasses in her hands. “Miss. Gage?” Joey was shocked. Michael gazed at Beth on the stage and smiled a crooked smile. Suddenly, someone whistled and shouted, “My queen! Queen!” Music was on. Beth started to throw bottles up and down. People were awed by her. Sexy dancers danced behind her. But no one could take people’s eyes from her. It was quite a show that Beth poured the wine from the bottle to glasses in all kinds of fancy ways. Soon, the glasses were filled with wine. The color of the wine was so pretty. Beth smiled and then a blue flame burning at the tip of her finger. Her fingers flew above those glasses and the flame started burning on the top of those glasses. Beth raised her arms flipped her fingers. The blue flame flew down from the stage. It was like a phoenix stretching out her wings. As the flame vanished, people in the bar were excited. They all yelled, “Queen! Queen!” At this moment, she was the queen who could make people crazy for her. Beth smiled and bowed down. And then she left the stage while people were still looking at her. Joey squeezed into the crowd and got a glass of wine Beth just made. He put it on the table before Michael. “Mr. Stone,” Joey couldn’t help complaining, “this wine sold out so quickly. I tried my best and only get one. But I didn’t know Miss. Gage is so good at making wines. That was astonishing. When she was on the stage, I’d like to bend down before her and do whatever she asked.” “Really?” Michael looked at him, “Joey, I haven’t known that you were interested in domestication before. Do you want me to introduce you some people who are good at it so that you can get to enjoy bending down before someone?” “No, thanks. I am good. It was a joke, Mr. Stone.” Joey shivered. He was too excited to control himself. How could he say that before Michael? But it was true that he was blown away by Beth’s charisma on the stage and the audiences’ excitement. Michael held the glass and sipped. “What is its name?” he asked. “Nirvana,” Joey replied. “It is Miss. Gage’s recipe.” Michael nodded and looked at the bar counter. Beth had removed the mask off. She was making wine for guests. She was nothing to do with the queen now. Though she only took off the mask, people seemed to don’t know who she was. Michael took another sip and felt relieved. Even though Beth worked in places like this, she would be strong and tough, and none of her good characteristics were stained. “Someone went for Miss. Gage!” Joey shouted. Michael was speechless for Joey’s reaction. He knew that Joey didn’t like Beth. But after this show, Joey became one of Beth’s fans at once. Well, Michael didn’t hate such a change. It was better for the future. He looked at the bar counter. And a girl who looked like a student stood there shily. Beth said something with that girl and that girl left Beth a thick notebook. And then Beth asked someone to send that girl away. “Mr. Stone,” soon, Joey who went to gather information came back. “That girl is Miss Gage’s classmate. She came here to send Miss. Gage notes. And I found that Miss. Gage has her textbooks under the bar counter. She reads books whenever she is free… But that is strange.” “What is strange?” Michael asked. Joey paused and then uttered, “Miss. Gage is a senior. She never gets good grades in examinations. If she studied so hard, why would she never get good grades?” “Have you brought things I asked you to find?” asked Michael. “Here.” Joey took out a pile of papers. They were all Beth’s papers. And none of them got a high score. “Those teachers of Mearcy High School are awful. Though Miss. Gage couldn’t get high scores, they should never keep her papers and laugh at her,” Joey said angrily. Michael was sure that Joey was indeed Beth’s fan. He flipped through those papers and soon he found something. He checked them over again and again. Joey was confused. He asked, “Mr. Stone, is there something wrong?”
