I woke up at 6 am. I see a bunch of texts from an unknown number. I opened the text. It is from Maria. She's thanking my brothers and me for helping. She also sent a picture of the carpet I bought. She put it in the sitting room. It looks good with her brown leather couches. I reply saying it's a pleasure.
Melokuhle walks in with a smile on his face. He tells me Sabelo just called to say thanks. He showed me the article. These people are prepared to write anything about me. It's so frustrating, but my family is excited.
For my parents, being in the newspaper means a lot. They think I'm a celebrity. They just don't understand that these days, anyone can be in the papers. And I got tired of trying to explain. Maybe if I was in the newspaper for something other than being 'One of the country's sought-after millionaire bachelor's wife to be' I'd be happy. I really hate the attention I'm getting. But thinking about my millions makes it worth it.
I looked at the heading and the picture and I rolled my eyes. So helping Maria and bringing a gift and 2 bowls of salads made it to the news? These journalists are boring. I didn't even read the article. I have a busy day ahead. I'm getting married in a month. I hope we go for something simple and less than 500 guests. I don't want to exhaust myself with planning a wedding only to get divorced after a year. But Sabelo keeps insisting that we have a big wedding so that people, especially clients he works with, will believe him. I stopped complaining. It's his money and he's too controlling to let me do things my way.
It makes me glad to know that after a year, we'll both go our separate ways. I don't want a controlling husband. In some ways, we are the opposite. I doubt that if we got married out of love it would work.
^^^^^
Planning a wedding is not as glamorous as most people portray it as being. It is draining. What's draining even more is the fact that I'm planning a wedding that will definitely fail. So today, I'm taking a break. I'm going out with Maria. She wants us to meet for lunch. So I agreed after my mom told me not to accept. She made it sound like I'd been committing the worst crime by taking a break from planning the wedding to meet Maria.
The reason I'm marrying Sabelo in the first place. The reason we still have a home. The reason we are able to extend it. The reason her youngest sons will be able to go to Universities without worrying about the fees. The reason my dad's business is booming. I know recent clients aren't in need of my dad's services, but they do it because he's Sabelo's father-in-law. And some of them I know want to impress him.
As much as I don't like my fiancé's personality. I can't deny the fact that his wealth and influence will benefit my family and me. So I prepared to go out. I'm not only going because Sabelo will benefit. I'm going because I like the older woman, she seems sweet and genuine. I hope I get to build a friendship with her. And still have her as a friend even after the divorce.
"Are you going out dressed like that?" My mom asks me, while eyeing my shorts, vest and flip-flops in a strange way.
"No, I'm going to change." I tell her, and she lets out a sigh of relief.
A few minutes later, Maria sent me a text asking me to cancel. I'm a bit disappointed. I really wanted to go out. Planning for this wedding was tiring and stressful.
Just then, Sabelo calls me. I wonder what he wants. Sabelo and I hardly talk. So it's a bit of a shock that he's calling.
"Where are you?"
No, hello, how are you? Nothing. I'm glad we'll be living separate lives even though it'll be under the same roof. I tell him I'm at home.
"What about the lawyer we're supposed to meet?"
"Oh, the lawyers."
"Yes, the lawyers." I didn't like his tone, but I hung up with the promise to see him in an hour. I hang up as he continues to say something.
Forty-five minutes later, I walked into his office. He looks all fresh and super handsome in his blue suit with a black shirt and shoes. No tie this time.
There are 2 guys with him. One of them is Mlungisi, his brother, and the other one is Zen, his lawyer. They also look good in their suits. But not like Sabelo. This guy looks like he was made for the suits, not the other way round.
This is not the first time I've been in his office. But it's still as intimidating as the owner. And it looks different from the reception area. While the reception area is mostly grey. Sabelo's office has dark blue walls, and a big dark wood table. His chair is black. The 2 visitors' chairs are also dark blue, the same as the 2 couches and the black carpet. I've never seen such a dark office. But it suits him. His personality.
There's something dark and dangerous about my future hubby. You can feel his presence in the room without seeing him.
Someone knocks, it's the receptionist. She walks in with another blue chair. I took the chair from her and I walked toward the guys. I greet them. One of them doesn't respond. I don't know what's wrong with this guy, but I let him go and asked for the contract. The reason I'm here.
I forgot about the prenuptial I'm supposed to sign. I expected 2 pages max. But nope, it's more than 2.
I take the document and read through it. I can tell that Sabelo is angry. This guy just wanted me to sign without reading. Mlungisi gave me a summary of what to expect. He also encouraged me to read through the document. So I am reading. And it takes some time for me to finish.
"Are you going to finish?" Sabelo asks me. He sounds annoyed as if this whole document is 2 pages long. Not 47 pages.
I knew he was wealthy, but wow, I had to reread some lines 2 or 3 times. I felt like my eyes would bulge.
"Don't rush her. This will take longer." Mlungisi reprimands.
This guy has so many assets and conditions. If I didn't know better, I'd say this is a work contract. And then I remember that in a way I'll be working.
