“Oh, Bob’s dad knew. They all went to school together…college, I mean. But she never said a word to Bob. Not one mention of why she took that yearly trip and until he found the papers he always thought she was going back to visit friends and spend some time by herself out of town, that kind of thing. But from the death certificate he found, also in the same pouch in the safe, he learned that she had passed shortly after he was born, so he never really would have known her, if you know what I mean.”
I nodded, though she couldn’t see me. “Wow. She must have been pretty young. How did she die?”
“According to the certificate, her cause of death was listed as some form of cancer, the best he could tell, something that had thirty-five syllables and sounded downright scary.”
