Wren – Then
“My lady.” I nodded my head as she stepped back against the wall, to let us passed. Her eyes lowered to the tray in her hands.
“Sir.” She did a sort of little curtsy and finally her eyes lifted. Her face was cautious but there was a smile shining out of her eyes. And I felt my heart lift a little.
It had been weeks since our meeting in the meadow. Weeks of sneaking a soft word or touch when ever we could. She was finally beginning to relax around me but only when we were away from the castle.
It got to the point that I looked forward to her few hours off more than anything in the world. It was only then that I got to hear her laugh.
Her laughing was the most beautiful thing in the entire world.
“Have you changed my sheets?” I hated the way I had to talk to her when I was with my brethren. But I really didn’t have a choice. People were already talking. I had heard the whispers.
If it became public knowledge that I wanted her but was refusing to take her, one of my enemies would mark her just for spite. She would be lost to me forever.
“No sir.” She froze.
Opal was more drawn now, there were shadows under her eyes and a faintness to her cheeks that hadn’t been there when she had first arrived.
Tired and hungry.
Like all the humans here. But it made me worry about her. She was fading right before my eyes.
“I would like a tray.” I nodded my head towards the empty tray in her hand. “Brought up to my rooms as well.”
Her eyes darkened, her jaw clenched. She might be fading but there was still fight in her. A defiance I found beautiful. But she didn’t argue back. “Yes sir.” Another curtsy.
“You are cold to her.” One of my dragon brothers laughed. “And everything thought you were sweet on her.” He spoke like she wasn’t standing right there. Trying her best to look like she wasn’t listening. “I would ….”
“Maybe she sparked my interest at first but she is too thin and to opinionated to make a good mate. I have no time to train her properly.” Brushing passed her I let my fingers trail across her hand. Praying that she would realise that I didn’t mean the words that came out of my mouth.
“Well I would train her happily. Especially that mouth.” Another laugh.
I hated that they spoke about her like this. I hated everything about this whole situation.
She knocked on my door ten minutes later. I knew it was her before she had even come to the door.
My dragon was always aware when she was near. It was like every sense I had was tuned into her.
“Come.” My voice was muffled by the shirt I was tugging over my head.
“I have your….” Opals voice trailed off.
The door banged shut behind her as I struggled with the tangled shirt. The ties at the throat were too tight, wedging the material over my face.
“Sir?” She sounded uncertain.
“A little help would be nice Opal.” I hated feeling so confined and my dragon hated it even more. If I didn’t get free of this material soon he would force a shift and demolish not only the shirt but half the castle as well.
She laughed, a small giggle but it was her hands on my naked chest that made me freeze. She slid it upwards and I felt the ties loosen as she worked at the knots. “Opal.” I said her name on an exhale as I pulled the shirt off complete.
She didn’t move, both her hands flat on my chest as she stared up at me. Her pale eyes round.
“Freedom at last.” I tried to joke but it came out raspy. She was so close , her scent enveloped me. “Hello Opal.” My hand skimmed across her waist before closing around her. She didn’t move away, didn’t move her hands from her skin. Her pink lips fell open.
She wanted me. There was no denying the darkening in her eyes or the way her breath hitched as I squeezed.
“Hello sir.”
“We are alone Opal, you can call me by my name. I like it when you say my name.” I would love it even more if she was screaming it as I lost myself in her.
It was becoming more and more hard to resist her.
“I like it a lot.”
Her eyes shone. “You do?”
“Yes.” I stepped up into her space. I didn’t want to scare her. I just wanted to be as close as possible to her. “Did you bring food?”
The light winked out, her eyes lowered. “Of course sir.”
“Good, then come.” Lowering my head I brushed my lips against her white blonde hair. “Eat with me.”
“Eat? I have your room to…”. She trailed off. Her eyes scanning the room.
“I have done it so we have a little while together alone.” Grinning down at her, I led her towards the small table. “I will do it every day so you can come in here and have breakfast with me.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because it’s my job to look after you and you are too thin. I would look after you every second of the day if I could Opal, if you would let me.” Settling myself on to one of the chairs I tugged her down on to my lap. “But until you are ready to be mine this is the way it will be. You will sit on my lap every morning and I will feed you.”
“Wren…” her voice broke but her lips parted as I slipped the slice of apple between them. “This isn’t a good idea.”
“And why is that?”
There was silence as she chewed. “Because when you are nice, when you are like this I can feel myself falling in love with you…”
I grinned against her back. “Then I will have to be extra nice from now on Opal. Because your love is the only thing I want in the world.”
