I exchanged glances with Gwen and she gave me a knowing look. “The golden residence is the prince’s residence. What are you still waiting for, Maeve?” “What if it’s just a trap?” “What if it’s not?” she c****d a brow and sighed, “Besides, I’m sure you can handle him quite well if you quit acting like a damsel in distress or Daddy’s girl. It’s so annoying sometimes.” “But useful.” I rolled my eyes at her and stood. Clutching the paper in my palm, I took in a deep breath before I took one step forward and then another, gingerly making my way out of the ball and quickly to the Golden residence which was thankfully not too far away. I have been here before. Once when I was a kid and I was following the prince around just to have a look at him. I loved watching him even if it was from afar and he just hated me for reasons unknown to me. Many years went by before I finally realized he would never look at me, never return my love. I came out of my thoughts immediately as the guard made way for me to go inside. It seemed as though, they had been informed of my arrival. One of them then led me upstairs, to Blake’s room. As he opened the door for me, I saw Blake. He had his broad back to me as he stared out of the window with a glass of wine on his left hand and the other in his pocket, looking so cool. I immediately looked around for Sloane but she was nowhere near so I relaxed a tiny bit before I stepped in. The door immediately closed on us and I could feel my heart already racing. Blake didn’t turn around or say a word to me even after a while and I just stood there, watching his back in the silence until I didn’t think I could anymore. “Why did you call me here if you were going to just look out of the window?” He didn’t answer. He just took another sip from his glass and I was forced to go closer to him, noticing a hint of a smile on his lips. I stood next to him, curious about what he was watching so seriously. It was the ball. His ball party. From this height, the people looked so small as they chatted and laughed in the most elegant way, connecting with people they must’ve only heard about. I even saw Dad, in the Vvip section where the King was also sitted, surrounded by some really big shots. “You smell so good, Maeve.” Blake’s whisper fell on the exposed skin on my neck, causing goosebumps to spread all over my body. My eyes snapped to his immediately, bright ocean blue eyes were sizing me up, piercing into me. I didn’t know how to reply to that so I just said the one thing on my mind. “Where’s Sloane?” “Did you really have to bring her up?” a hint of frustration entered his face. “Isn’t she your girlfriend?” “Aren’t you my mate?” I paused, a very brief pause before I looked away from him. “If you knew, then why didn’t you say anything earlier?” “Because Sloane was there.” He dropped the glass he was holding on a nearby table before he covered the distance between us and I was suddenly trapped in his arms. “I couldn’t possibly claim my mate in front of my girlfriend now, could I?” So that was it. That was why he didn’t say anything earlier. “I get it now.” I said, swallowing, hating the way I enjoyed the way we were close or the way my wolf purred, wanting more contact with him. “So, what do you want from me now Prince Blake? If you’re not going to claim me..” “Who said I wasn’t going to claim you?” Hope. Hope surfaced inside my heart. Perhaps he wasn’t as bad as I thought him to be and maybe I could take Gwen’s advice after all. Make him mine. “Just not now.” He whispered the words as his hands fell on my arms, the skin contact making me shiver in delight. “Right now, I need you. My wolf wanted to meet you as soon as possible.” Perhaps what he meant was that he needed some time to take care of certain things like breaking up with Sloane before he claimed me. I tried to make myself believe that even though I might be wrong. He placed a finger under my chin to tip my head in his direction so I was looking straight at him. Something seemed to swirl in his eyes before he leaned forward, his lips merely inches away from mine as he whispered. “You belong to me. You’re mine.” And then he claimed my lips so slowly at first and then the moment I returned his kiss, letting my hands go around his neck, he drew me closer to him by my waist, deepening the kiss, tasting me hungrily. I think I must be losing my mind. I feel as though, this was made to happen. Like I really belonged to him now. I felt happiness in my heart and even my wolf seemed to be high up there already. He growled into my mouth, his hands tightening around my waist before I felt him loosen the rope putting my dress together. Fuck. I could smell both of our arousal already. And maybe I was so ready for this, so ready to have him. That was until we heard a voice in the distance that instantly made us break the kiss. Both our heads immediately whipped towards the door. Sloane was here. And she seemed… furious. “Where the f-ck is that b***h?!” she yelled. “You’re going to answer me right now!” she seemed to be tackling a guard. “Oh she’s in there? Is that why you’re stopping me from entering?” Her voice sounded so shrill as she yelled, “Blake!!!” And then suddenly, she was banging on the door furiously which startled me. I looked up at Blake just as he looked at me with his hands still wrapped around me. “Listen to me, Maeve. You need to hide right now!!” Disbelief passed through my eyes with a scoff. “Why do I have to hide from your girlfriend?” “Sloane is a crazy woman. I don’t know what she would do to you if she finds you here.” “So are you worried about me or are you afraid of your girlfriend?” “f**k don’t you get it?” he ran his hands through his hair. “YOU NEED TO HIDE!” he said the words like he was trying to drill them into me. Another bang on the door and I knew in no time, the crazy woman would break it. Blake cursed furiously and then he grabbed me. Before I knew it, he was throwing me into the cloth filled closet and closing the door on me instantly. Another scoff of disbelief left my lips as I stared at myself cooped up in the small space just moments after kissing my mate. Moments after feeling like I could be one of the happiest women on earth. I heard the door open and then Sloane’s footsteps as she charged inside. “Where is she?” she demanded. “Who are you talking about, Sloane? There’s no one here.” Blake quickly denied and my fists clenched tightly. “You’re lying to me.” She said. “Someone saw Maeve coming here and your guards even let her through. You’re probably hiding her. Why else would you take so long to open the door?” “Can you even hear yourself?” Blake sounded disappointed. “Of all people, why would I want to be with Maeve? Have you forgotten how much I hate her?” I took a moment to swallow that up before I felt the tightening of my chest. This time was different than all the other times. It hurt real bad to hear him say those words. He hated me? Then why did he say all those words? Why did he claim me? Why did he kiss me? “You’re the only one I have eyes for, Sloane.” His tone softened. “If Maeve was in here then she probably sneaked in to spy on me. She’s such a dumb, weak girl. Why would I pay any attention to her?” My chest tightened again and I felt like a complete loser hiding in here in the closet while he fed lies to his girlfriend to please her. I didn’t think I could stand hearing him talk about me like that. “It’s fine if she’s not here babe.” Sloane’s voice softened and I could hear the smooching sounds as they kissed and got touchy. “You don’t have to get mad because of someone like her.” They breathed heavily. “When you’re crowned later, I’ll be…” Is he really going to do it with her knowing I was in here? Blake… tears burned in my eyes but I refused to let them fall as my heart ached in pain, hearing her moans of pleasure. It was even worse that I couldn’t see anything. The pain that tore through my chest, I couldn’t stand it at all. I couldn’t stand them, having to listen to them make love while I was cooped up in this small place. Blake was a bastard. I have seen it so many times so I was more disappointed in myself that I had even had a little hope with him. I thought we could be what I’ve only ever dreamed of. I thought that being mates could change everything. And even Gwen brainwashed me into thinking I could achieve my happiness. But that was a lie. It was all a lie. I caught the semblance of a tear that slipped out of my left eye with my forefinger and then the next moment, I was kicking the door open, open to meet their startled faces as I got out of the closet. “You—” I guess Sloane couldn’t find words to say as she got off of Blake who she had been kissing madly moments ago. “You were in here all along?” “If I had tried to hide my scent then that could be the reason you didn’t notice me but I didn’t try Sloane and you didn’t notice anything. Am I the only one wondering why?” My eyes drifted towards Blake as he began to put on his clothes to look quite prim and proper once again. “Don’t you make any stupid assumptions.” Sloane made her way towards me and I folded my arms and watched her. “I was too pre-occupied to notice a filthy smell like yours.” “Oh? I didn’t ask for an explanation.” I laughed internally when I saw the series of expression that passed through her face. It was the first time I got her like that. It made me wonder if she truly were hiding something. “Who do you think you are Maeve? How dare you come in here and—” “That is not a question to ask me.” I cut her off, directing my gaze to the Prince. “You should ask him instead why he invited me.” “You probably sneaked in here to watch me as you’ve always done.” The Prince said with a scoff and Sloane directed a smug look back at me. “I knew you were following us earlier and perhaps because we hadn’t dealt with you properly, you thought you could do it again. But I’m not surprised…” she slowly covered the distance between us until she was literally in my face before she whispered. “Just like your mother did, whoring herself to have you with-” Slap. My jaws clenched as I cut her off with a smack of my palm to her face before she could complete those filthy words. “You f*****g b***h!—” Slap! “Your mouth really smells Sloane.” I stretched out my fingers, watching as Blake rushed to steady Sloane before he threw a glare at me. I walked towards the door and when I glanced back at them, I wasn’t surprised to see their shocked faces. Slow, sensible, gentle Maeve, who was always waiting for her Daddy to save her could throw hands after all. I have always kept that kind of profile. Now that I have lost it in front of them, I should be prepared to face my father’s wrath.
